I agree. For some reason they struggle to come up with decent Fed designs on a regular basis.
I think it's partially that they tend to take rejected concept art and use it directly. Most of that was rejected for good reason. I think a bunch of the rejected Defiant concepts are in STO, for instance. A lot of it is also just incredibly un-original, like this. It's a stretched out Defiant with random spikes on the front. Wheeeee. They do manage to make some good stuff on occasion, though; I actually quite like the Excalibur.

Ich, there's a name I haven't heard in a while. Yeah Starship Creator had some odd design options, but for the most part they looked like they fitted together.

Yeah there are a few designs for the Federation I don't mind. Not a huge amount, most are some of the older ones.

Pictures of my T6 Vor'Cha. I think the nacelles and wings are T6, the rest is classic Vor'Cha. I feel that a lot of other combinations don't really work that well. But I do love the new wings.

So I rolled an Age of Discovery character.
Firstly, you can choose between Human, Vulcan, or Alien as the races. Uniform choices are initially limited to the Discovery uniform.
They've done a very good job with the Discovery missions. I didn't encounter any bugs and the ambiance was very different from the STO we all know and *coughs* love. Once again I think this proves that STO would have been better suited to a TOS era than a post TNG. Cadet Tilly is probably the most engaging character in STO, I was actually sad to see her go (she doesn't stay on your crew). The interiors are great, but so far they haven't been added to the selectable ship interiors.
There are only three missions, of which the first is the tutorial which you cannot replay. Sadly the last mission ends a bit... abruptly and the arc seems unfinished. Rewards for the other two missions are Discovery ship phasers and torpedoes, so you can always go back and replay them to get more if you want to keep the space weapons. There is something odd about the phasers, sometimes they fire the elongated pulses (a bit like blue WoK phasers) but sometimes they are more like Kelvin type pulses, which is unfortunate. I've not figured it out yet, it may be because I have a mix of linked arrays and normal arrays. More investigation required.
The starter ship is a typical starter ship. I'm not too big a fan of the pylons and nacelles, but it actually doesn't look too bad in a Type 0 skin (TOS style). I'll post some pictures at some point.
Ground weapons, I love the ground weapons. Unfortunately the only place to find them is at Starfleet Academy and that is only while in the Discovery era. Once you've completed the final Discovery mission you're shot to the 25th Century and you can no longer access the ground gear.
Uniforms. I'm really not a fan of the Discovery uniform (seriously, why did they do it?!? And if the plan was to "migrate to a TOS era aesthetic" as CBS have claimed then why didn't they just start there... anyway, I digress...). However, I've found it actually looks quite good if you use TOS colours for the tops, black for the bottoms and use boots without those stupid chevrons (I'll get some pictures at some point).
I actually spent 750 zen on the Discovery starter pack. I was disappointed to find that the Walker couldn't be outfitted with a TOS skin like the starter ship - I think that may be a bug. It also doesn't have any customisation options (but I didn't really expect it to). The ship comes with a 4/3 layout and you can use them all the way down at Ensign. There also seems to be a bug that you can use crew abilities at ranks higher than what the crew should be able to use.
The pack also comes with scalable weapons. By that I mean the weapons that come with the ship and also a phaser pistol and rifle (which is why I got the pack). However, as yet I haven't been able to reclaim the pack on the same character, so my plans to get them on all my BOffs has been foiled.
There seems to be another bug in that a number of packs have disappeared from the C store for this character. I wanted to claim my Enterprise pack to get a few bits and pieces, but its gone! Not sure what's going on there.
I'll probably keep playing my Discovery character for a bit, the Walker is good to Tier 4, but in all honesty it feels a bit of a let down to go from the excellent Discovery missions to the old STO Klingon War arc.

Because it wasn't the original plan. Like adding hair to Klingons and introducing a TOS-style D7, this is a result of backtracking from a poorly received redesign. With all of these they're saying it was always part of the plan, but that often directly contradicts their earlier statements.

The inability to reclaim some packs is a bug known to the STO developers that I think they're trying to work on. The only other bug I've found is the DIS uniform available for DIS characters is different from the one available in the C-store in that the collar's color cannot be changed, unlike the c-store one, which can be changed.

I got around that by changing to the Odyssey uniform (which has four colour slots), changing the colour in the forth slot, then switching back to the Discovery uniform.

It's interesting to see how much DIS content isn't there yet. I didn't see the new Tellarite design, nor did I see the Cardenas, Hoover, or Magee classes implemented anywhere.

Anyone know yet if we can use the new Andorian makeup on Andorian characters yet?

As someone who plays STO a lot, all the problems/inconsistencies you said are bugs.

As for the mission arc, they are changing how quickly they roll out new stuff. They are going for much MUCH small content drops but much more frequent. That is why it's so short. The reason why the first mission was the first mission and the second was the last in the story was that they plan on adding the rest of story at some point (I disagree with that idea). Frankly, give it a year or so and it will be complete.

It's simple how the old school colors can salvage the Disco-era beasties. I still concede that the Malachowski Class suspiciously looks like the stock A2 repair ship. :p

Thanks to those that voted for me. The winner of that round got 19 votes, I came second with 9. Personally I felt the "girls with guns" image should have gone through as, unlike the winner, it actually required thought and placement. The winner of the round just relied on a pretty backdrop (and it was pretty).
Anyway, Round 2 begins tomorrow and I'm in the second batch so I guess you'll all be voting for me again on Sunday :)
Looking back through the entries it looks like it'll be NX vs NX and rings vs rings with a humourous image of some dead (christmas) fish as the odd one out.

Thanks for the votes peoples.
As I suspected the fish picture came in first and it was a battle of the NX's for second place. The result was actually a tie with ten votes apiece, which means it all came down to a random number generator. Sadly RNGesus was not smiling on me and I am now out of the running. I freely admit that here are better pictures in this competition so I wouldn't have won anyway.

Remember that I got knocked out by a random number generator when I drew against another NX pic with an almost identical angle? Well that picture went on to win the whole competition. I will confess to be slightly annoyed, but it seems to be the way that this year has been going for me.
On the plus side, the Discovery themed one did not win, which I'm glad about because aside from a (very) pretty background it doesn't have much going for it.
