If I can get the patch installed before then, I am free Friday night for a little while (Im rusty as a rusty nail dipped in rust and dumped in the ocean with a side order of Alfa Romeo body shell) but I still know how to pull a trigger...

I'll keep in touch and let you know!

Good to hear that! The patch is quite gigantic (1.8GB, essentially the whole game), but it takes only around ~45min on a mediocre DSL connection when you're using a torrent program (I use µtorrent). The installing itself goes quite fast. So if you have the time to let your comp run an hour or so, you should be fine.

I've heard some good things about it, less lag bugs and overall increased usability of beam weapons. Oh, and I've been running around with the Linebacker for a bit - awesome 'mech.

Forget about friday, I can't be there. My superiors (read: parents) just told me that I'm unavailable. ****it! :cry2:

That leaves only Saturday & Sunday. Anyone free?

In case anybody is interested, I updated the emblem of the Tigers with more detail and stuff, including bits from the current site design, like the new gradient and the ring.

Thank you!:) I also made a badge of it for Mercs. In case you forgot, it goes in /Content/Textures/customdecals. This one is 64x64 instead of 32x32 like the old one so it looks much nicer.

I updated the emblem again, this time to have the gem be the same resolution as the rest of the image rather than a hugely up-scaled, pixelated mess. Doesn't look quite like the original, but I think it looks nice.

attachment.php

The cooler part though is that there are now desktops! They can be found here in 1280x1024, 1280x720, and 1920x1080 resolutions. The 1080p one is a bit fuzzy, so I'll fix that for the next version of the emblem with the new site design. The widescreen desktops were an afterthought since I made the original for myself, hence the fuzziness.

That's some pretty cool work. I use a 1680x1050 resolution myself.

Will be cool to see the new version after I do the site update.

Since Terra actually has his in his signature, I decided to make a set of revised ranks to match the revised 2012 emblem utilizing the new gem. I felt kind of silly making these since it looks like I'll be making new ones in a couple weeks but I'm very happy with how they came out and I think they're a big improvement over the originals.

Awesome! Wearing the new one right now!

Unfortunately for ye olde clan, the devs behind the mekpak3.1 and the mekmatch system have dropped all MW4 support. This apparently happened around Nov/Dec last year. They are now supposedly developing an "AAA game".

I'm currently trying to find out how long mekmatch will stay online, whether anyone will take over from here and who that might be. Also investigating alternatives. Hey, FO is still alive and happy on tunngle, and I actually played there once or twice in the past. So that might even be feasible.

EDIT: Looks like the good old Mercs4free doesn't exist on the internet anymore. So much for that. Apparently they just went and deleted everything and now it's illegal to even share the hotfixes.

Alright, here's the official line.

* MekTek Studios version of MechWarrior4 was a free release provided with permission + license from Microsoft.

*MekTek Studios is moving away from MechWarrior/BattleTech so we have been trying to support a new group of MechWarrior fans trying to bring MechWarrior4 back online.

*Since Smith and Tinker went bankrupt and foreclosed - gaining permission from Microsoft has been challenging for the new group.

*It does appear that the Free Release was well supported while Smith and Tinker existed but not so much nowadays. We've been told that this is a "money" issue.

*Since both Piranha Games and Microsoft have not expressed any support for the free release - we are unsure when exactly anyone will be able to bring back MechWarrior4 legally.

EDIT: Okay, so it appears that if you have the game you are allowed to play it but not share it with others. And there's no way of getting MP3.1 legally now.

Tuggle may work, but why in the world they decided to make distributing anything illegal I can't fathom. The game was free for several years, after all. Right after I backed up the installer and patches, too...

As far as I can tell, they dropped MW4 support and tried to set up a group that would continue to run it. Which apparently worked out, except for the fact that with Smith&Tinker gone, it's hard to get a license for a free release (the old one was tied to mektek and apparently couldn't be transferred) from teh M$. So now there's technically no one with the license to redistribute. Which sucks hard. The mods and admins have been going around the forums telling everyone "Sharing is illegal, getting the files over the torrents which are still being seeded is illegal as well, spreading Mercs4free is basically piracy now."

I'm currently checking whether I have everything required to set up working installs. Sharing allowed or not, if at least the single player is still working... I miss running my Black Heart on Coolant's server soo much. :(

The most recent full install was .0028 with patches .0029, .0030, and hotfix .0030c.

Good news. I have both a functional (as far as I can see) install and a complete set of full install .0028, patches .0029 and .0030 and the .0030c hotfix. I'm also looking for the original extractor file in the bowels of my machine, though I have an install of that as well.

I'm terribly busy currently but perhaps in march we can set up a match or two? :) direct IP matches are still possible, and there are tales of people using 'gameranger' ... and yes, you got that right, it's a freaking batchall. :3 tigers!

I have the original MTX Extractor installer backed up. I don't know if I'd be allowed to distribute it though.

I have the original MTX Extractor installer backed up. I don't know if I'd be allowed to distribute it though.

Back in the day of the .001x series, iirc you could just rename a mtx file into a zip file and dezip that. I think that might still work today. Don't know if the extractor writes anything into the registry, but I doubt that. The actual MTX (the distribution software they wrote that was supposed to automatically torrent and update your games) never worked for me, so I've always installed via extractor, and as far as I know all it does is take the darn thing and decompress it into the right directory.

EDIT: LOL. Apparently they removed the link to the extractor when they removed the old mektek frontpage, but the thing is still lying on the server. I was able to grab a copy off an old bookmark of mine. (The torrents are definitely gone tho, and the tracker thingy is down.)

Sounds good to me! :D

Awesome. I'll dust off my old Hauptmann and do some training runs on New Exford next week.

EDIT: I'll post the md5 checksums of my install asap to make sure it matches yours.

Basic shapes are done and the 2012 tiger is there (and probably not being replaced this year), but the actual styling is going to have to wait. The colors on the ring, diamond, and chevrons are just for contrast and are not representative.

I have a new set of ranks as well now. In addition to matching the site, I've also made some changes to the names to make them a little less American-centric (since I know Terra commented about that before), coloration to distinguish officers and enlisted, and a few other things. Next to the ranks in the list is their country of origin, or the closest thing to it, if not American.

I also have two new ranks and one new concept to propose that work outside of the normal system. First is the Commander in Chief, who would get this rank by majority vote and is above General. We would probably want more people before we try that, though.
attachment.php
The second is the Honorary Tiger, for people who aren't part of the clan or don't have MW, but we think of as fellow Tigers anyway.
attachment.php
Lastly is a new concept called Praetorian status, named for the emperor's guards in Ancient Rome. The idea is that this would be awarded to people for doing really cool stuff like killing an Atlas with a Flea or getting a direct hit on an Elemental with a long-tom from outside of visible range. An achievement, basically. It would be denoted by turning your rank insignia white, but wouldn't change your position in the chain of command.

Awesome work on the rank insignia, am already rocking the new one! It fits perfectly! :)

Hm. I'm not sure I like the crossover rank names, they seem a bit ... odd. I guess I've just gotten used to the anglo ones. That's what I get for hanging around with you folks. ;)

Love the new ranks, both images and names. They work great. I might have to get you later to do some MSFC ones if I ever re-introduce the posting rank system.

I wasn't entirely sure about them at first myself, to be honest. My main goal was to simplify them while keeping the same number by renaming them. You'll notice that we don't have four different grades of sergeant anymore, for example. I was also going to put some German in there, but I couldn't figure out how to pronounce most of them.

What do you think of the proposed ranks at the end? Like them both? Hate them? Like one, hate the other? Praetorian?

Thanks! If you put it back in, couldn't the poster rank system be tied to the new achievement system? They seem like they would go together.

Additionally, there are new desktops in 1920x1080, 1680x1050, 1280x1024, and 1280x720 resolutions. I meant to do a 1600x1200 version, but I realized too late that I wasn't working at the right resolution for that and it would have meant redoing the whole thing.

Lastly, there is a new MW badge.

Simplification is a good thing, in this case. I always thought the IS tended to go way overboard with these. I'm pretty sure that the LCAF has more ranks than it has mech classes. :p (then again, I am a Lyran fanboy and thus should shut up.)
As for the German, pronunciation shouldn't actually be an issue. It only seems weird, it's actually pretty straight-forward. If you need help, just let me know.

What do you think of the proposed ranks at the end? Like them both? Hate them? Like one, hate the other? Praetorian?
I thoroughly approve of them! :) The Praetorian is concept-wise awesome.
I just worry that we won't get much of a chance to hand these out. With the Mercs4free dead for now (and the Mechwarrior4 Foundation Group supposedly busy trying to convince M$ to hand out a license for free distribution), I doubt the Tigers will grow considerably in the near future. Heck, I don't even know if all the guys still have their installs. TF I haven't seen for months, and DJ hasn't checked in yet to confirm status of his install.

-----

While we're at it, here's a piece of info on Mercs4free from an announcement that was made between the years (Dec 28).

We can no longer maintain MechWarrior4 internally and we believe MechWarrior4 will continue to grow and prosper under the new direction of the MFG. We plan to continue working with MFG to ensure MechWarrior4 continues to function for the community. Allowing MechWarrior4 to move on allows us to gear up for dedicated development on our to be announced title. We will keep the community updated on the status of MFG's transition and we will let everyone know when their servers are functional.

Note:
  • The MFG doesn't exist on the web apart from this announcement and a few forum posts by ex-devs. Which is understandable (since they don't even know whether they'll get the license), but more than frustrating.
  • "Keeping the community updated" so far has been restricted to telling people that negotiations with M$ are on-going.
  • Their "to be announced title" turned out to be a MMO to make shiny monies. I love how they tout their "Free-to-Choose: New Revolutionary Model", despite the fact that it's the same old pay2win scheme people have been using ever since the whole Free-to-play thing started.

I really don't like bashing these guys, since they've done an admirable job maintaining the free release for the last years and have had some pretty rough times (I don't even know everything that happened to Jeho, he was one of the lead devs for a long time until he essentially received several critical hits from Real Life. Darn, I miss the poor guy. Wonder what he's up to nowadays...). But holy frak, what a way to put an end to this.
It's actually quite sad - I remember listening to the podcast they did about Mekpak4, and the models they showed around of the Neuromancer and Turkina, saying they wanted to slowly migrate all the MP4 stuff to MP3.1. That was the status quo when I left - with hotfix 0030c in my hands and hoping there'd be a new version in a few months.

-----

Should this MFG ever manage to get a distribution license from teh M$, I think it's going to take a few months, so for now it's best if we keep this organized tightly. (It might also be interesting to see if anyone's up for an MC2 or MegaMek match, since we're already in the universe.)

I'll work out the German later. I figure most of it should be pronounced similarly to English, but I know some of it is quite different. As an example, in Sherlock they showed that rache and Rachel sound only vaguely similar.

(It might also be interesting to see if anyone's up for an MC2 or MegaMek match, since we're already in the universe.)

I'll go check those out. If I'm lucky, they'll run without me needing to boot back into Windows. Wine is good for most things, but sometimes it just doesn't work.

Okay, now that I have a (somewhat) better understanding of German ranks and pronunciation, how about renaming Colonel to Oberst? I was going to suggest changing to changing Captain to Hauptmann, but since there's a mech by that name I figured it could cause problems.

[General Awesomeness spots an enemy Hoptmann]
Gen. Awesomeness: Private n00b, destroy the Hauptmann north of my position.
Pvt. n00b: Aye, sir.
[Private n00b destroys Hauptmann Bob's Shadowcat]
Hptm. Bob: What was that for?

Since the mech was named after the LCAF/LAAF rank, this is basically canon. :p I love my Lyrans, but they're messed up.

With a new year approaching, so does a new emblem. Here's a teeny tiny preview.
attachment.php
In related news, I have eliminated all the jaggies in the old tiger with extreme prejudice and shall be on trial for genocide (amongst other war crimes) tomorrow evening.

In somewhat related news, TV Tropes lied to me. Nakama just means friends; apparently a One Piece fan sub was responsible for the site wide confusion and the article has been renamed to True Companions. In light of this, perhaps the name should be changed to something else so we don't sound like a cheesy Saturday morning cartoon.

In more related news, there will be so many resolution and color variations in wallpapers from 2014 forward that I will no longer be posting them individually for the sake of my sanity. Instead, they will be in zips or rars arranged by color. There are currently six resolutions and five color variants for a total of 30 wallpapers. And by 'color variants' I mean they will have distinct palettes along the lines of the difference between my current avatar and the 2013 emblem. The current resolutions are:
1280x1024
1280x800
1280x720
1600x1200
1680x1050
1920x1080

If you would like a new resolution to be added to the list, just ask; it's pretty easy to add new ones.

And now for the weather.
