Good morning folks,

Just thought I would share this sad news with you all...

Here is a quote taken from our company intranet;

We are deeply saddened to inform you about a tragic event that occurred yesterday at the Permanente cement plant in Cupertino, California. Reports indicate that an employee shot and killed at least two employees and wounded others. Lehigh Hanson continues to gather details of what happened and is working with law enforcement as they conduct their investigation.

“We are shocked and saddened by these horrible events,†said Dan Harrington, President and CEO of Lehigh Hanson. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. I have committed the company’s resources to assist our affected employees during this difficult time.â€

Heidelberg, 6 October 2011

Apparently one of the workers at one of our factories in California went on a killing spree with a pistol and an AK 47... He killed minimum three and wounded numerous others...

Such a senseless and sad event...

But - is it just me, or do these events become more and more common as time goes on? Not just in the US but the world over (recently here in Norway too...).

A sad event to be sure, and not meant to be disregarded,
But to be honest, as time goes on, our population rises, and with no natural predators, we are by far the worst plague to occur on this planet as a whole. That is not to say that we haven't done some impressive things, Great wall, Eiffel tower, Pyramids, among them. But eventually even colonies of bacteria begin to create things similar to "structure", and as a population increases, so does the chance of an (violent) anomaly, such as a bacterium that survives by consuming its own prior parent cell, and then goes after the rest of the massive colony. "A person is smart. People are stupid panicky animals."- M.I.B. Admittedly, humanity is not noted, even among itself, for its intelligence. We are close to running headlong into a wall, without even considering the damage we may take at this point. The Artilects are on the verge of awakening.

I don't believe it's a case of these events becoming more and more common; it's more that:
1) Over time, we are getting more and more access to news from around the world, including the relatively small stuff (not to say that this is small stuff, of course).
2) The news providers slowly adapt to what will make them money and fame. People are (for some reason) interested in these kind of events, so over time the news providers focus more and more on finding and transmitting this kind of story.

While this is absolutely possible, we are still overgrowing what small amount of land this planet may hold us upon, and as population rises the chances of anomaly do naturally increase, anything multiplied by infinity is infinity, higher numbers create higher numbers.

So, Iashar, what you're implying is we're all bacteria who will eventually eat each other? I suppose the survivors of this terrible tragedy can take comfort in the fact this was an 'anomaly'. What a wonderfully insensitive viewpoint you've expressed here. Maybe if one of your relatives/friends had been shot by this person, you might view things a little differently. Using the death and tragedy of others to publicly spout a bunch of psuedoscientific gobbledygook with only the most tenuous of of connections to the story indicates you've zeroed right in on the core values of this issue. May I ask what it feels like to have all the answers to everything? Pretty good, hunh?

Did anyone even bother to read the original story as posted on the BBC News website?

EDIT: Decided to act like one of those bacterium you've compared us to, Iashar. A survival response to a damaging external irritant. You're unfriended and blocked as fast I can make it happen.

Well that's just hurtful, facts are facts, unchangeable. Sorry if I've hurt your feelings with that, never said I was perfect myself now did I? So you block and unfriend someone just because they can see the world from such an alien viewpoint? Well, so be it. No loss to you, who couldn't care less, if this is how you feel, cause I can't change your mind. If you truly do wish to act like that, as I said, a person is smart. People in general, as an entire species, are not in any manner free from natural laws, don't blame me for pointing it out when I get a chance to, as I would be no more fortunate than the next person. It was not an attack. It was a statement of a thought. And you should know by now I'm all about pseudoscience, if you want to call it that. I call it actuality, since its a general truth. I don't hate you or anyone. But I've never been the emotional type, so where do I have room to speak? Not to mention you completely read deeply into it, when I laid it flat. There was nothing below the surface to read into. The main idea I was stating with the bacteria is that they quickly divide, and we have seen this happen. We also have mathematical probability which states simply that the more of something exists, the more likely something terribly wrong may happen. Or you could put it in a different form, the more humans there are, the more we can see our own flaws as a whole, or as individuals, and the more of us there are to document these anomalous happenings. Learn from others mistakes. I am no better than any other. But I wish continued existence for you. As that is what I would want. And another note, my friends live far away, I only get to talk to them online, and I've not met a single one of them in life. As you could imagine, just being near me is a grating experience, even I can hardly stand me. I honestly don't know why I'm alive. I question existence at all points, especially my own. So if you honestly find me as an irritant, go ahead and wall yourself away from me. Such is your prerogative, as would be banning me, if any of the higher ups wish it so.

You know Iashar, I have to hand it to you; you've just become one of a very small group of people online who've actually made me genuinely angry. As a rule I stay out of forum/internet arguments because they tend to devolve into petty squabbling about something completely unrelated. In fact I don't think I've ever expressed sincere anger at anyone in this community for as long as I've been here, even with pond-scum like jetnova.

I think you should seriously consider keeping your 'views' to yourself if you're incapable of empathising like a decent human being over something as horrific and tragic as this. This is not fodder for you to express your own bleak pseudoscientific thoughts on humanity, 3 people are dead - people who were loved and will no doubt be missed. Maybe you should stop trying to sound intellectual for a moment and consider that. Now, I have no desire to discuss this (or anything else really) with you any further.

Dino I’m truly sorry this is what you’ve had to deal with mate, senseless events like these are always so hard to get your head around. I do think maybe easier access to news & information makes these things seem more common since they‘re wider reported, though the relatively easy access to firearms doesn’t seem to be helping in the least. It’s a shame this obviously troubled man couldn’t get the help he needed before he snapped like this, and it’s a tragedy that lives were lost.

Gentlemen

Remember that there is more that unites us then divides us And remember that we all all in titled to our options and that they may not be shared with other.

"You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. Thunder you and I and our countless of brothers and sisters in uniform sworn to protect and uphold The United States Constitution. Free speech lays at its core. We must temper reactions with at knowledge my brother in arms.

With that said There is a time and place for this but this was Not it Iashar

Iashar, I am surprised by your heartlessness. You are perfectly fine to express your own viewpoints, but not ones which insult us all as a human race, in a thread which is made to commemorate men who lost their lives no less.

In fact, reading your infuriating and ridiculous post again, I can not see how it has anything to do with the topic at hand. What is the point you are trying to make? This crazed guy with a gun was doing the world a favor by reducing our population???? I can see no other point that is being made and unfortunately, based on your response, I might have to do the same as thunderfoot. And I have never done that before.

Besides, what did bacteria do to you?

@Dino Please accept my condolences. I am very sorry you have to have this on your heart as you work. It is always a sad time when horrific incidences like this happen. One has to wonder what these people think. I like to believe they did not at all, but unfortunately I think some consideration and premeditation has to go into this monsters mind. It is just not possible to buy a gun or two, go to work and shoot your co-workers without thinking about it first.

This was all I was responding to. And all my post had to deal with is numbers, if nobody can open up and understand that simply as it is, that is your own issue. On a global scale this is honestly what? A drop in the bucket? THAT is what is sad. The fact that I can compare it that way, and we are supposed to be the best thing in the universe? I mean really, we can't even care for ourselves as a whole. You fix that and I'll stop seeing things from such a sorry point of view.

I like how you think that, because you can see us as a plague to the universe, you have some kind of superior view point than the rest of us. And yet you call the loss of three lives a "Drop in the Bucket."

I think I am done with this topic.

Wow...what's really sad is that you can't open your point of view to see what I'm saying. The only reason I've seen for this inability is closed mindedness. You take every little thing I say out of context completely and then throw it in my face. I'm impressed, really.

This means LOOK really hard at what we've done to each other. Humanity is its own worst enemy. Humans are our natural predator. So instead of whining about 3 lives, lets actually try to fix things, so that humanity doesn't have problems. Then we can move forward.

JEEEZSUSS AITCH KERIIIISST! Someone whom is a respected member of this Community posts a thread about someone who works for the same company he does going berzerk and killing three other people who also work for the same company and all you can do is continue to spout off more of the nonsense which so very obviously ****es people off? Have you no compassion at all? Is there no soul within you? And where have you been and what have you done that we should give any credence or even notice your opinion on the rest of us, "bacteria"? What have you done which has significant impact on the lives of others? Why should your opinion on this count for more than the rest of us?

Alright, I'll get right to the point I am trying to make since subtlety is apparently something you do not understand.

1) Your posts within this thread are very very offensive in tone, content and wording.
2) They show a completely self centered lack of regard for the feelings of others.
3) I do not personally believe you've done enough as a human being for your so obviously skewed viewpoint to be expressed in such a thoughtless, crude, and unfeeling manner.
4) Your posts display a remarkable resemblance to the tone, content, phrasing and attitude of one Jetnova16. Had I no proof, I would firmly believe from this point you and he are the same person.

@ At, HK. No need to remind me at all of the allowances and costs of the 1st Amendment. I carry a thumbnail sized chunk of shrapnel within my left hip which presses on the nerve plexus to help remind me. It was earned in February, 1991 while crossing Phase Line Smash. I also carry flowers to three graves in Arlington, VA every November which reminds me clearly of why people like this person are allowed to post such cold bloodedly thoughtless drivel. I have to defend and tolerate him. But the same 1st Amendment you reminded me of allows me the ability to not be silent about my viewpoint of him. Next time you'd like to chastise a fellow veteran in public about freedom of speech, you will need to find another one. Because I'm all done here at MSFC. Please go ahead and drop the banhammer right now. So I will not have the opportunity to make the mistake of continuing to associate with people such as this one. I can afford to be picky about whom I hang with. Good a time as any to start cleaning out the trash.

You have yet to try and explain how I have misunderstood. As far as I can tell, you say the same thing in every post, so it is really hard to take your posts out of context. But please, tell me how I am taking what you say out of context. I would really like to believe you mean something else by your statements than what I am getting from them.

And yes, obviously compared to your superior view point, we are all closed minded. If i were you I would take everyone's advice and post your opinion in your own thread instead of polluting dinos with all this useless argument. At this point I can't even get to arguing about your viewpoint because I can't get past how rude and heartless you are being. Please open another thread to talk about this.

I think you have all over-reacted to just one persons opinion and as such I am closing this thread.

Since when did people get angry over just one person's opinion or perspective unless they thought there might be a small grain of truth in what they say?

I myself am neutral on this subject and do not care either way, however I am closing this to prevent further arguements, if you wish to do so please do so via PM. and the Ban has been lifted due to it being aimed at a person who was only voicing their own opinion.

Just to let you all know that I have received several PM's from some of our newer members about everyone's behaviour in this thread so I have gone over it several times to verify what they pointed out and I stand by my decision on this.

These new members while they agree the post may have been a bit inappropriate to the subject at hand agree that it was in responce to part of the original post and they are also worried that if they at anytime want to share their opinion about anything will get fired at just because other people do not agree with them and have also stated that they feel that this place might not be the best forum for them after all if people are going to behave like children and attack because other members feel slighted over something that was not even directed at them & are seriously considering leaving our site.

I also see that perhaps quite a few of you took the comments the wrong way and got overanxious over a generalisation rather than brushing off with a grain of salt as should have been done.

If you have a problem with my decision then I suggest you take it up with me.
