• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

Touchscreens and a tower

I'm due for an upgrade at the end of the year and I'm drawn towards getting a touchscreen, I'm loving it on my Surface Pro 2 and find myself wanting to use it on my desktop machine as well.

I don't want to get one of those all-in-one numbers though, I want to have a tower that I can swap things out of and tinker with. This leads me to the situation where there's next to no decent touchscreen monitors out there that don't have a computer built into them already, or they're ridiculously expensive.

Has anyone else come across this? Any suggestions?

I have never looked into touchscreens personally, but with any new technology (as it is for desktops) it's going to be expensive and hard to get. To be honest I have only seen them as built ins for computers and have never seen them sold separately, at least in Australia I used to live in Newcastle and only saw them once as part of a PC being sold in Officeworks if I recall.

Now that I live on the other side of the Blue Mountains I haven't seen them in Bathrust (biggest major town near me), though it's not surprisingly considering the country gets very little in such things.

Have you tried looking on the web at all?

I'm a clean freak when it comes to fingerprints on my monitor so I don't think I could live with this kind of system. I'm constantly wiping off my touch pad. :)

I have seen a couple online less than $300, like the ViewSonic VX2370Smh, but I was hoping to get it in a physical store somewhere. Also the relative unpopularity of these means that not many people have helpful advice about which ones are better (The ViewSonic is pretty ugly really, especially if you grab two!)
