• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

Texture Glitch and Procedure Question

I have a .tga for a shipyard that was 256x256 and wanted to make it bigger so I changed the size to 512x512. When I went back in game the station now appears shaded in black and is hard to see until I zoom in really close then the original colors start to show slightly. Why would changing the size of the .tga cause this to happen?

Also, as I mod my install and ask questions should I keep all my posts in one thread or post different threads each time if the questions are on different aspects of the mod?

The issue could be is if it has LODS (Level of Detail). Where 256x256 could be the close up view with smaller ones 128x128 and 64x64 being the further away perspectives of the model. LOD is done to help minimize the processing needed for that particular ship. I have no real experience in this, I know Starfox1701 has done a bit of work with LODS however.

As for posting questions, either would be fine though if you use the one thread, perhaps naming it something like: Rifraf's Mod Troubleshooting Questions or something like that so members know what the thread is about.

Thanks Majestic. It is the cyard that Aad did in his Cardassian stations pack. He used the stock sod, but just redid the textures. He had a 256 and a 128 and I changed them to 512 and 256 respectively and that's when it messed up for some reason. I re-copied the ones over from his station pack to put them back as he intended and they appear normal again. Strange

Removing the lod textures and nodes from the hardpoint map on the model could probably get rid of that error for you. It's been a while since I played around with A2, SODs and the like.

Did you make sure that you saved the texture as an uncompressed tga?

That's a good question? I only changed the size and typically anything I save is uncompressed just like it was before I changed it, but it could have reverted possibly to compressed? I'll take a look when I change another file.

I know Gimp defaults to compressed and there doesn't seem to be a way to change that. It's very annoying.

Gimp also likes to put the origin of a file in the lower left hand corner. Idk if this could cause a problem but it's something else you should watch out for if using Gimp. It should be in the upper left hand corner.

Also, which program are you using to edit the texture files?

I haven't quite gotten the hang of GIMP yet so I've been using FastStone Image Viewer. I really like it, but I've only been changing texture sizes, rgb values, shadows and stuff like that like all stock races torpedoes to look a little different and I like the results for the most part. This was the first issue with this program so I'm pretty certain it always saves as uncompressed.
