This thread is for talking about Harddrives. Anything related to them belongs here.

To start, I just wanted to see how many people if any, have a 1TB (1000GB) "TeraByte" drive.

Did you know, the 750GB drives are under $200 (USD) already?

How much space does your computer currently have?

How much do you pay for a harddrive?

I myself have 320GB (twin 160GBs) currently. I'm planning on upgrading after the first of the year. In 2008, I will go to at least a 1TB setup. I spend an average of $50 to $150 (USD) on a single drive. I'm planning to buy dual 500GB - 750GB drives. Unless the 1TB drives are under $150 each, then I'll get 2 of them.:)

I would enjoy having one of those. Currently the system I am using has a total of 10GB. But I do have a 40GB waiting for a different system. I am hoping to have some funds to start building a much better system.

My laptop has 150 gigs and my desktop has 200 gigs.

After I save up some money I plan on getting a top of line system... the whole deal: 4 gigs ram, 3.5 Ghz processor dual core, dual GeForce 8800's, 500 gig harddrive... and maybe a 1.5 terabyte external harddrive to complement...

I have two harddrives:

  • 146GB
  • 111GB

I plan in the next couple of weeks in buying a external USB 500GB HD for backing up all my important stuff like YY, Parallels and site related files.

Lol, Cylon, I have somewhere in my stuff an HD from the early computers. Those ones that are the size of a bus. The HDs then were about 45cm diameter. My first computer didn't even have an HD. My first computer with an HD had about 80mb, then I upgraded to a 200mb, then finally a 540mb.

Now, here we are, a 1TB is within the average man's grasp! Tech sure has made my life a bit better. Just wait until we get to 1PB and 1EB. That's only maybe 5-10 years away. Then we'll be asking how did we ever store even a single picture on less than 1GB of space. Just wait about 2 more years, and we will see an "explosion" of 40-100TB HDs hitting the market.

I remember my first computer had a 50MB harddrive. I remember being told how difficult it would be to use the entire drive. B/c that was such a HUGE amount of space back then. LOL

I have 4 500 GB internal hard drives SATA 2 each. 4 external hard drives with classified amount of storage space. 8 flash drives for backups of the brunt of the server.

My list of hard drives (that I can remember):
1996: A dinosaur with 220 MB (yes, MB) of space. That was even tough to deal with then!
1998: 3.5 GB drive
1998: 4.3 GB drive, turning the 3.5 GB into a secondary drive
1999: 7.0 GB drive
2000: 6.0 GB drive for the old laptop
2000?: 10 GB drive
2000: 20 GB hard drive for PC
2001: External 20 GB hard drive, later on an additional 40 GB external hard drive. Later on a 30 GB hard drive for the PC
2002: 60 GB hard drive
2003: 10 GB drive for old laptop, 80 GB drive for PC
2004: New laptop: 80 GB space. 120 GB for PC
2005: Eventually 500 GB for PC, new 120 GB external drive
2006: 4 500 GB internal SATA2 drives for new machine.
2007: 4 1 TB external USB 2.0 drives for tons of backup. Other various flash drives for storing more data just because I'm a "backup everything or else" freak.

And that's about all.:D

Well, you have me beat on the HD space. At the moment, I have plenty to spare, so I'm in no hurry to go out and upgrade. I do that around March of each year usually.

It sound more like a business server than a personal PC there Elrond.:p

I'm running out of space so I think in the next couple of weeks I will be going out and buying an external 500GB HD and perhaps a third internal drive as well. :)

I still have a good 130gb free, a.t.m. I also use my DVD-RW to burn off any files I'm currently not using. With me always making new models and textures, I have several 8.5gb DVDs burned full of older files.

Right now, as for hardware, I'm more focused at getting my other hardware upgraded. My little CPU is getting out dated. I have been waiting for the Quad Cores to be released. It looks like they may be out by the end of the year.
