• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. Type: Office Suite (Similar to MSOffice)

Introduction

Well it's been sometime since I posted in here so I thought it was about time I did a review on something.

OpenOffice has progressed much since it's first version. I have one of it's first versions which was a simple PDF writer and exporter that had many features similar to MSWord.

I recently visited the site and discovered that it has progressed into a full office suite which I am currently downloading. On a personal note I have never had a problem with the early version while I have had MSWord 2003 crash on more than one occasion.

The OpenOffice Suite comes with it all, a spreadsheet application called 'Calc', a text document creator called 'Writer', a powerpoint application called 'Impress' and a database application called 'Base'. Further more it has two added/additional programs one called 'Draw' which in a nutshell allows a user to make complete diagrams and graphs and a application called 'Math'. 'Math' is quite unique and my average knowledge of MSOffice tells me that it does not have a application like this. 'Math' basically allows you to do complete calculations and formulas which allows you insert them into other OpenOffice programs like 'Calc' and 'Impress'.

To summurise what each program does
  • Writer - Document creation program similar to MSWord
  • Calc - Spreadsheet program similar to MSExcel
  • Impress - Powerpoint program similar to MSPowerpoint
  • Base - Database program similar to MSAccess
  • Math - Formula program
  • Draw - Diagram/Graphs program

Notes of interest

'Impress' actually also allows you to turn your powerpoint presentations into flash video files than can be steamed online on a webpage.

'Writer' can export to HTML and PDF formats.

'Calc' can import MSExcel documents/spreedsheets and can even export these to PDF format as well.

'Base' supports many popular databases database including (Adabas D, ADO, Microsoft Access, MySQL), and can even supports common formats address books such as Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Windows, and Mozilla.

The spell checker is linked to all the programs in the suite, this means if you add a word in one it is automatically available in the other programs across the suite.

Conclusion

To this reviewer it appears OpenOffice is a step ahead of MSOffice and does the one thing Microsoft is no longer doing since the introduction of Vista and Office2007, backwards compatability with older document versions and other (compediators) file formats.

I for one will be using OpenOffice as my main office suite from now on and don't plan on using MOffice on my home computer in the foresable future.

I suggest to anyone who is frustrated with the latest Office or looking for something new while familiar to check out OpenOffice.

Well, I paid $20 from Target but, hey, it was well worth it. I personally prefer Calc over Excel now, and I use it for all KA2 Balancing and such (note to ALL modders, balancing is a majorly overlooked area of modding, its critical you get it right, so use a computer to help you do the maths. Calc or Excel are perfect for the number crunching.)
