Red Dust Storm Hitting Australia

A huge outback dust storm swept across eastern Australia today, leaving most of New South Wales, including Sydney shrouded in a thick red cloud of dust.

Flights were diverted and Sydney's iconic ferries were suspended as city dwellers woke to deep red skies with visibility down to a few feet, and thick dust coating cars, buildings and beaches.

The emergency services were inundated with calls from people fearing a major bushfire in the city while dust particles triggered scores of fire alarms and, in one Sydney train station, an emergency evacuation.

Further inland, the swirling dust blacked out the outback mining town of Broken Hill, forcing one mine to shut down.

n intense low pressure system sweeping NSW from central Australia brought wild winds that whipped up the dust from the state's parched inland areas, spreading it over the entire state.

The extraordinary weather conditions also fanned several bushfires across NSW.

"This is unprecedented. We are seeing earth, wind and fire together," said **** Whitaker from the Weather Channel.

The blanket of dust stretched hundreds of miles along the coast and inland from Sydney, coating towns as far apart as Newcastle in the north and Canberra in the south.

Barry Hanstrum, regional director of the Bureau of Meteorology said the cloud could reach New Zealand, 1200 miles east of Sydney.

"There's a fair chance that it will keep going out into the Tasman Sea and it won't dissipate quickly,'' he said.

"They may see some effects of reduced visibility as far east as New Zealand.''

“An event like this is extremely rare,†Mr Hanstrum said. “It's one of the worst, if not the worst.â€

Callers to ABC radio likened the scenes to the end of the world.

A housewife from Sydney's inner west said she woke up to find the red dust had covered her floors and birds had been blown out of their nests.

"It did feel like Armageddon because when I was in the kitchen looking out the skylight there was this red, red glow coming through," she told the ABC.

Inland, as rainstorms swept in, the rain fell as mud over cars and houses. One caller told local radio; "I have a green car and it's now an orange car. The wipers are barely able to cope with all the mud."

Dust storms are not uncommon in Australia, but for the most part are restricted to the drier inland areas. However during widespread drought, they can affect coastal districts when high winds whip up the loosened topsoil from the outback and carry it over the country.

One of the most spectacular storms occurred in Melbourne in 1983 when a dust storm that extended across the entire width of Victoria covered the city with a 20 mile (320 m) deep cloud of dust.

It was estimated at the time that 1000 tonnes of topsoil that had been stripped from inland Victoria was dumped on the city in just a few hours.

In a day of wild weather across Australia today, hailstones as big as cricket balls slammed into the town of Crookwell near Goulburn, in NSW damaging windows and tiles.

And just to complete the mayhem, two small earthquakes measuring 3.0 and 2.6 on the Richter scale rattled Melbourne, although there were no reports of damage.

HEALTH authorities are warning people who suffer from breathing difficulties to stay inside as a massive dust storm covers much of NSW.

NSW woke to a blanket of thick red dust shrouding the city along with strong winds prompting warnings from paramedics and the health department.

The rare weather conditions have forced asthma sufferers and people suffering other respiratory illnesses indoors.

Pregnant women, children and the elderly have been urged to prevent dust entering their lungs.

The NSW Ambulance Service issued a warning to people suffering from asthma or other respiratory illnesses to stay inside where possible and keep all medication on hand.

"We have already seen an increase in calls to people suffering from asthma and other respiratory problems," the Ambulance Service said in a statement.

"People with asthma in particular need to be aware of early warning signs especially if their condition does not respond to their usual medication.

"If your asthma does not respond quickly to your normal medication call 000 to get help immediately."

He said the unusually high level of dust in the atmosphere could cause irritation to airways and make a respiratory condition worse.

NSW Director of Environmental Health Wayne Smith said the conditions were "very poor" for people with asthma or any form of heart or lung disease.

"Keeping yourself indoors today is the main thing to do if you have any of those conditions and particularly if you have those conditions and you're a known sensitive sufferer such as children, older adults or pregnant women."

"It's well known that these sort of conditions exacerbate asthma and exacerbate symptoms for people with heart disease or lung disease."

He advised people to keep windows and doors closed and also said people should avoid any outdoor exercise.

"If you have asthma make sure you have your relievers close by and if your symptoms persist you should seek medical help as soon as possible."

These are just some of the news reports popping up on the web.
This morning Majestic and I woke up at 6am and saw what appeared to be fog on the horizon, at 7am we got up when the alarm went off and found a red sky, my first thought was *is this the end of the world? are we going to die now?* it is not the best thing to wake upto first thing in the morning, we are also recieving high escalating winds of upto 100km/h in some places which is spreading the red dust and making it seep into our homes causing breathing problems for those with asthma *such as my daughter* and giving everything a red/orange tinge and we have the taste and smell of dust everywhere.

Here are a few of the pics I took this morning at 7am from the front of our house onto the highway *included are a few from around the state*:

:Y That's really weird. It looks like you moved to Mars. Or the end of the world, whichever. You should tape up all of the edges of your windows with duct tape to help keep the dust out. Stopping up the bottom of your front and back doors with blankets or towels would help too.

Yeah we now officially live on Mars ;)

We have been using towels for the windows and doors as much as possible, they are all caked in red dust now lol what a weird experience this is, NSW with the Red Dust and 100km/hr winds, Victoria with the earthquakes and flash floods, Queensland with the fires and sand storms, FUN!

A lot of my family live in Australia, and I got a text message from my cousin who lives in NSW just checking to make sure the world hadn't ended overnight lol. What a strange thing to see such an orange hue over everything, best of luck keeping it out of the house, I don't envy the cleaning you'll have to do once it's gone lol.

After looking at the pics posted by Katala, all I can say is "Eeew!" How very odd it must be to wake up to such a sight. Gonna be a real mess to clean once it all passes. Down Under has caught some nasty weather and natural disasters since the beginning of the year. 'Bout time the Aussies caught a break, I'd say.

Yes well I was very worried when I awoke at 7am and saw the red reflecting through my window and then opening the curtain and seeing everything that colour quite frankly scared me almost to death I had to get Maj up just so I knew I wasn't dreaming! Especially after having been up an hour earlier for a drink and only seeing the standard fog looking sky lol

Yeah our weather has been quite weird this year and we have pretty much even skipped spring as well as most days it is like summer lately which is rather unusal for september and winter came pretty early for us as well. I'm thinking we are in for a rather warm summer this year unfortunately for me I'm going to suffer, I have what is called Grave's disease which also causes a heat intolerance so I will be like  all summer unless of course I some how manage to get some kind of air conditioning! :lol2:

Thankfully the Red Dust has cleared up but there is still dust in the air from what has been left behind because we still have quite strong winds stirring up the remaining dust, Maj's red 4x4 now looks like it has been in the mud, my dark purple car now looks like someone poured red mud all over it and left it to dry and there is red dust on everything outside.

Wow. I've seen images of the Sydney Harbour Bridge with all the Red Dust around it and it looked like in a movie about the end of the world.

Truely, like Mars.

Hello:
That is very strange indeed, it really can make us imagine a view of terraformed Mars:shock:.
I hope things are going well and that storm did not cause any problems.

Haha well thats one way to break up the monotomy of everyday living! *Lets go have a red/orange town for a change and see if anyone notices* :lol2:

It actually felt like being on another planet! Sydney had some awesome shots, one person though tried claiming it was fake because the picture looked darker than they could see the red dust, and all us who know a bit about photography tried explaining that camera lenses see the true image, our eyes however do not, the image is different, our eyes adjust the scene before us to suit themselves such as adding more light where as a camera cant unless we adjust settings :p

In someways would have been nice if it had lasted longer to get a good feeling of what Mars would look like, altho I am certainly not missing the tase and smell of dust through my house! :lol2:

Err...Katala, why did you put spoiler tag on the news report. It occurred in the real world surely anyone could find out about that.

Err maybe because 1. it takes up less space, 2. it saves people having to search for it themselves making their life alot easier so they can just read it here? Or if they choose not to read it the spoiler tag hides it so they dont have to scroll through endless information to get to what they do want to read?

looks like we haven't heard the last of it folks, I fell asleep this afternoon after an exhuasting day and awoke to read the following:

Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology
NSW

Top Priority for Immediate Broadcast
NSW and ACT SEVERE WEATHER WARNING
Damaging Winds.
For people in the Alps, the ACT, the Southern Tablelands, the Central Tablelands, The South Coast, Illawarra, and Hunter.

Issued at 5:05 pm on Friday 25 September 2009

Synoptic Situation: 3:00 pm EST Friday
A vigorous cold front has moved into far western New South Wales. It is expected to reach the southeast of the state late evening/overnight and reach the far northeast Saturday morning. Fresh to strong, gusty north to northwest winds will turn colder fresh to strong westerly behind the change and may reach gale force in the above districts with blizzard conditions on the Alps. Snow is expected to fall down to about 900 metres during Saturday. Dust has been reported over northwestern New South Wales and South Australia today [although less in extent than on Tuesday] and this is expected to be transported to eastern parts of the state during Saturday.

Average wind speeds may reach 65 km/hr with gusts over 90 km/hr forecast for the above districts. Over Alpine areas blizzards can be expected, and above 1900 metres, winds may exceed 80km/hr with gusts in excess of 125km/hr possible.

Emergency services advise you to keep clear of fallen power lines, stay indoors away from windows and keep children indoors.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service recommends that people consider postponing back country travel until conditions improve.

For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES.

The next warning is due to be issued by 11 pm Friday.

This warning is also available through TV and Radio broadcasts; the Bureau's website, or call. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate this warning being broadcast regularly.

So it seems we have not yet gotten out of trouble! At least this time it wont be as bad as the first and we are prepared for it :lol2:

These kind of storms usually are very dangerous in that respect having lived in areas before where they occur regularly the best thing to do is stay inside as much as possible

Maybe the world isn't ending, just Australia.

OMG! I knew there was a reason why I wanted to move out of Australia! LOL

I've just checked up on the dust storm outside and it is no where near as bad as it was on wednesday however the winds are still quite strong, I do however feel sorry for all those silly people who recently washed teir cars after the last dust storm *we havent washed ours yet* mine is more dusty than it was last night hehe

I read about this on one of the news websites (may have been Sky). I thought it was pretty cool. Obviously not so much for those living in the conditions, but it is an experiance, and it beats looking at the same colours all day long. :)

I haven't read the entire thread, so you'll forgive my asking, but was there any particular reason that this came around?

it was caused by the gale force winds that were coming from inland to the coast, they were that strong that they brought the red dust with them., we got a second dose though not as bad, most of which is cleared now but the winds are still hanging around and blowing around the dust that is still lingering.

In an odd coincidence I have been reading War of the Worlds again lately. This version has the original illustrations published along with the chapters. Welles originally released it to the newspapers as a weekly serial. The pictures you've posted and the other sites I've seen this on have an eerie resemblance to those illustrations.

I remember reading that years ago lol

And it seems NSW coastline has yet again been hit with another dust storm!
The skyline this morning is covered in dust once again, altho the unobservant person would think it cloud, this time thankfully it is still not as bad as the first or second dust storms we received!
For us on the coast to be hit by a dust strom is a rarity in itself
But to be hit by 3 dust storms within 3 weeks is indeed a rather large oddity! The weather lately is indeed rather weird! It is supposed to be the middle of spring and we are supposed to be receiving almost summer like temperates yet we are getting more like winter climates lately making the weather rather cold lately!

Yeah we do don't we! this is rather unusual weather for us though,
I mean I cant remember a year when we have had this much weather change!
We get a pretty bad storm every 30 years, there was one a few months after I was born, then 2 years ago we had it again just after my 30th,
now this freaky weather pattern has come to plague us! Winter was warm and now spring is cold! whats going on! :lol2:
