Hmmm, well I will be revising them anyway as they blend too much. Anyone have any suggestions for a different style?

A lot more trial and error. But I've finally found a deflector I can live with (and more importantly, one I can build!). Cut outs forward of the dish, misc bumps and dents, window cutouts for some of the big windows, finally got the shuttlebay to Boolean properly so I've done a bit of work there too. Another handrail around the bridge - they make a massive difference - plus the first attempt at booleaning some of the smaller windows. I think I'll do them all like that as they look so much better.

Edit - oh yeah, and it'll be getting recessed cargo bay doors, which is what the big empty areas on the ventral saucer are.

As I'll be visiting the folks for the rest of the week, I thought I'd throw up a quick test render. The secondary hull windows are now all positioned, just the forward saucer to do now...
I'll be reworking the impulse drives (both aft and saucer) to be more in line with the last pic, but that's for a later time. And obviously I need to finish the textures, bump maps etc... And to think I thought this one would be relatively straightforward.
As is typical, the weather has now improved, so after being stuck indoors all week it goes sunny just before I leave. So much for my gardening plans.

As its been good weather I haven't spent much time working on my meshes and textures - I actually came up with a list at work of my WIPs, it is somewhat excessive! The current mesh focus is of course the D6, which I hope to finish soon (but then, I hope to finish them all soon).

However, whilst home life has been somewhat busy and outdoorish, work has been somewhat dull of late. I've been thinking up some plotlines for a fanfic based around an Intrepid class named the Beagle - basically I think Trek needs to do a bit more "where no man has gone before" instead of "boldly going to the next spacedock." I've even started roughing out bits of the pilot - yes I have been that bored at work.

Now I have no illusions, I suspect this will go on the pile of projects never to be completed. However, it did get me thinking, who would I cast in the roles of the Beagle crew. I like to see people in my head when making up dialogue, it helps to keep the mannerisms and descriptions in line. Unfortunately, I don't watch much TV (at least, not much thats modern), so I'm not sure who I would cast for some of the main roles - especially the Vulcans. Anyway, a rather extensive list is below if anyone is interested, and of course if anyone has any suggestions to fill in the blanks please speak up. For the most part I'm trying to avoid big big names as, lets face it, Star Trek isn't filled with them.

CO - Captain Nick Lambert - Human - played by James Morrison (although he comes across as more military than I was originally intending)
XO - Commander "TBD" - Andorian - played by Alaina Huffman

ChEnd - Lt Cdr Thrac - Andorian - played by Joe Flannigan (I'm thinking all sorts of wisecracks about learning standard in California)
Eng2IC - Lt Snark - Tellerate - played by TBD
Eng - Lt T'Par - Vulcan - played by Maya Stojan (find a pic and tell me she wouldn't make a good Vulcan)
Eng - Ens Loic Arnod - Human - played by TBD (possibly an extra)
Eng - Ens "Rocky" - Horta - played by... CGI obviously, this isn't the 60s
Eng - Ens Gill - engineering Redshirt

ChTac - Lt Cdr Netan Leeta - Bajoran - played by Freema Agyeman
Tac2IC - Lt Satak - Vulcan - played by TBD
Tac - Lt Andrew Crowley - played by David Ramsey
Tac - Ens Elise Laboureix - Human - played by Willa Holland
Tac - Ens Haydon - security Redshirt
Tac - Ens Temizoy - security Redshirt
Tac - Ens Josse - security Redshirt

Helm 1 - Lt Linda Howe - Human - played by Louise Brealey
Helm 2 - Ens Yoge Wahren - played by TBD
Ops 1 - Marl - Bolian - played by TBD
Ops 2 - Ens Hannah Dawes - Human - played by (tentative Molly Quinn, but whilst I'm going for the fresh from the Academy look she still looks very very young)

ChSci - Lt Eliza Jarcom - Trill (unjoined) - played by Amy Acker
Sci2IC - Lt Tim Argyle - Human - played by Martin Freeman (who I seriously considered as a very different Captain)
VSA - Sonak - Vulcan - played by TBD (older guy from the Science Academy)
VSA - Tonack - Vulcan - played by TBD

ChMed - Lt Cdr Elain Staxxi - Betazoid - played by Shiri Appleby
Nurse - Ens Dario Giovanni - Human - played by Colin Donnell (yes, I'm going for stereotypical Italian serial womaniser)
EMH - Mk1 - played by Robert Piccardo

Local talent here, I suppose Derek Ramsay can take up the Ensign Loic Arnod role. Filipino blood would add diversity to the human cast and his passing resemblance to Com. Shepard would easily fit the sci-fi mold.

Oh, and Satak - Colin Morgan! Always thought he'd make a great pointy.

Also, interesting move in featuring a Horta crewmember - I read somewhere in Memory Beta that Starfleet had ships crewed entirely by the darn beasts - with rock filled portions of the ship!

I'm loving that Intrepid Mk 2 KJC, top work as always mate.

I can't blame you for not watching much modern TV, I too don't see much worth watching anymore. Apart from some movies I think I'm stuck in the 90's. lol

I can't wait to see the D6, I love that design which is basically a mash of the D5 and D7.

Sold and sold - although I think "Loic" needs a new name. And maybe a new rank new role. Transporter chief perhaps as I forgot one...

Thank you. On hiatus because
a. Its nice weather
b. I got fed up putting the windows in (Thats the last time I do a late era Federation ship!)
c. I came across an "issue" when doing the bump map... as the registry is seperate from the hull I have essentially folded the UV map so I only need to texture half the saucer. With the textures this is fine. However, where the two halves intersect I get a shadow anomaly with the bump map. If I can't solve it I may have to remap the whole hull :cry2:

Present watch list consists of Gotham, Person of Interest, NCIS and Longmire. However they're in the mid-season breaks now (what idiot decided that was a good idea) so we're in Big Brother season :cry2: So reading outside it is. Ultimate Force has just restarted though and the older ones are better, so that's something.

I can't wait to see the D6, I love that design which is basically a mash of the D5 and D7.
She's a lovely design. I like the clean lines of the D7 but I really like the D6. I've got the hull mostly done now, just need to finish up the impulse pod and add some detailing to the nacelles. Oh, anyone else notice the new D7 seems to have lost its aft torpedo tube?

Ok, pictures of the WIPs.

Intrepid Flight II - if you look at the shield grids you can see that there's an unusal splitting issue at the "seam" between the port and starboard sides. Obviously not on the outermost grids as these aren't joined. I think I also need to make them narrower and shallower, although at this point I'm suspecting that I'll need to physically cut them into the mesh. How I do that I don't know.

And the D6 as it currently stands.

Yikes, over a month since my last post. So here's a new render/photoshop experiment. Constructive criticism appreciated.

Looking good mate. I think the lighting is a little out though, a bit too bright for a space scene but lighting setup can be the most difficult in 3d rendering.

Its not a bad start all things considered. The background is a bit bright on second glance. Based from experience toning down the colors to a subdued palette helps to even out the image if you have a nebula cloud. But its all to up to personal preference really- what Majestic said rings true. Lightning really takes time to get a hold of.

Well overall brightness is easily fixed (although I may need to pick the beam out again). The nebula I'm intending on switching for a thinner red one (bad guy territory), this one is the same one I used in my animation, just reversed.

Looks pretty cool. I always loved the ominous look of Shadow ships, and the improved lighting certainly adds to the atmosphere. Good job!

Anyone ever had one of "those" meshes? The problem child mesh that causes grief at every step of the way. The high poly Intrepid II is mine, and I'm half considering just starting again!
Lets play a game of spot the difference. On the left is the mesh I'm working on, on the right, a render of that mesh. Anyone see my latest headache?

Take a break mate, I do it all the time when a mesh isn't working out. Usually it' in the texturing phase for me however.

LOL. Skyrim is usually a good break for me. I start a gimmicky character and see how it turns out. I even keep a few of them.

Well my maya machine has decided it now only has 256mb ram. D'oh! :cry2:

But despite my machine trying to commit suicide - I have good news! The texture problem was because it was referencing the wrong material. Why this happened I don't know, nor do I know why it was showing two completely different textures. But on changing to the correct material I get the correct texture... plus the bump map.

Now for the bad news -the shield grid looks horrible with the lighting.
