• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. I bought these games today (Both Homeworld and Homeworld 2), each for $20 (AU). Haven't had a chance to play them yet. Anyone got these games?

I know the thread is fairly old, but still I want to dig it up, hehe.

I got HW2 from a friend as a "Liberation Day"-gift (May 8, Liberation of Berlin 1945) last year and I am a huge fan of it.

Just a few screens to show you what HW2 looks like:

Battlestar Galactica in a firefight.
The dark small "clouds" on top of the ship are the traces of the frag barrage and the rest are Cylon missiles exploding.

Then we see a cruiser (from a modded game version) firing X-Ray lasers as well as its pulse guns.

Then the Nova class Dreadnought EAS Schwartzkopf.

Finally two Soviet line destroyers waiting for the next enemy wave.
(Actually these are two Hiigaran destroyers. The decal of the Red Star of the Soviet Air Force was done by me)

If you do not have this game, get it!

It is the only game that I know that achieved very good FX with relatively low system requirements.
HW2 features several things that people would like to see in Armada II, like moving gun turrets, real fighter launch capabilities, more tactical gameplay, better fleet micromanagment.
The drawback is, that modding this game (especially importing new ship models) is difficult.

Hmm, that game looks tempting. Maybe I should buy it then I got the money (if it's available here). :p

You certainly should, I've never bought Homeworld 2, played it, but never bought, the first Homeworld is just as good though, well worth the price assuming it isn't above $30 or something.

Own them and love them both.

Way back in the day when I first started doing modeling I made a few of my own ships for HW1. Nothing that ever got released but it was fun to play around with.

Aye, they're both very good games. Possibly the best space RTS series I've ever played. The graphics hold up even to today's standards in both cases in my opinion.

I've always wanted to learn to mod them - but never found any good tutorials unfortunately

The best I did was just untextured ships without any weapon points.

Wow, talk about blasts from the past. I got the original homeworld when I bought a buddy's computer and he gave me all of his games with it. It is an awesome game. still remember how much I loved the theme "Adagio for Strings" being played with an orchestral chorus when the homeworld was destroyed shortly afterthe beginning levels.

I also loved the mods that came out for this one. The Babylon 5 Great Wars series, the Star Wars mod and even the Space Above and Beyond were terrific.

Never did get the second one. I wonder if it was much different than the first? I wonder what mods came out for it? BSG, B5...looks pretty cool.

And yes the first one (And probably second just as much) was a royal pain in the romp to mod. The ship tables....oh how I hated the ship tables!! :x

Well worth the purchase these games were, I used to play with a buddy via TC/IP connection back in the day, one of the few MP experiences I actually liked!

I've never really had much of an issue editing the ship files. It was setting up points for the weapons, lights and such as well as getting textures to export and import with the models that gave me trouble.

I should install HW1 and see if I can still run it. Maybe we can setup a MSFC MP game.

Then maybe I should install the games and brush up on them as I never really got the grasp of playing the game in the first place.

Ahh the day of when you had to know the people in the game to play with or against them, prevented a lot of cheating than, and no matter what you could always be sure you had the same version and ship, if not than you would just sent the files needed to your buddy and have them install them.

I still love TC/IP connection games, (Play A2 with my little Bro that way.)

That would be cool, hopefully my CD is still ok, I think last time I tried to install it I got some annoying errors. Anyone else up for a MSFC MP match?

I'd love to play MP but I would have to wait till summer holidays (first two weeks in August) I have HW 1 on my laptop and both 1 and 2 on my PC. I have played about 8 mods for 2 Star Wars Warlords being my favourite. The sheer number of ships to use was great.

On 1 I had a Star Trek mod which was ok but it had Feds and Klingons on one team and Dominion and Cardassian on the other and I dislike mixed races, lol.

As far as modding went I could just about change the emblems on HW 2 ships lol.

Picked up 1 and 2 a couple of days ago. (Ah, the wonders of the internet!) Started with one (Good, but clunky, kinda like armada I) enjoyed it a little. Started on 2, and it blew my mind. :Y Can't wait to start modding it. This game freaking rules!

Sorry guys - total necro post here...

Just wanted to share...

Ok - so I got my new "entertainment" laptop... Sorry, but i cant call it a gaming laptop - its not specced enough..

Anyways - I have had HW2 for years - but my original rig only had a 2x (thats right, 2x...) cd player, which is below the minimum for HW2...

So... I finally played it at the weekend and it blew my mind

So much so, that I d/l'd the BSG mod for it... only just got it working this morning, havent played it [BSG mod] yet... but it looks amazing!!!
