• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

We have a policy of fairness and a non harassment environment, with the staff quick to act on the rare occasion of when this policy is breached. Feel free to register and join our community.

Hello everyone, I am Steve Wilson. I am new to modding and really just like to play the games but now maybe it is something new that I can try. I still haven't really figured out what a SOD file is but ODF files seem straight forward. I have read Westworld's Big Book of Modding and I have learned many new and interesting aspects to modding. Sounds interesting. I have decided that maybe I should try modding out. I have a few games that I have found mods released for and think I'll try one of them. I have Armada 1 & 2, Legacy, Star Trek Voyager Elite Force, and Battle Stations Midway and Pacific.

What games would you recommend trying to mod for a first timer?

The SOD files are models. Milkshape 3D is a modeling program with a plugin available to export in SOD format.

Armada 1 and 2 are pretty easy to learn how to mod. Most of the Command & Conquer games are also fairly simple once you get the right tools.

Thank you everyone, I think I'll start with Armada I for modding, or maybe two.

How hard would the Command & Conquer games be to mod?

I would recommend A2 for the start - not that it's better, but there is a lot more material available for it than for A2. Most of it is also up-to-date.

Oh, and do you have any of the CnC games? You can get most of the old games (Tiberium universe, at least) for free, if you don't have them.

Welcome to MSFC.

Armada 1/2 are great for modding, I haven't managed to get any where with modelling (yet...yeah I've been saying "yet" for a few years now lol) but everything else is pretty easy to do. Another game to look into with great modding capability is one called Men of War, it's a world war 2 realtime tactical game but there's a wealth of mods available allowing you to create prohibition era, modern warfare and stargate scenarios. Like most games alot of the mods are in perpetual alpha/beta status and require some manual editing to get working on your part, but that's where you learn how to mod yourself so you can get up and running making your own stuff in no time :D

I think you might be recommending A2 to start, I am guessing because I see A2 twice. I'll take it your suggesting A2, I might be wrong you could mean A1.

I have CnC - Tiberium Universe, I just recently got a copy, wish I knew I could have gotten it for free, I ordered it.

Men of War sounds interesting, I think I'll see if I can get it. Maybe a stargate scenario would be fun to play.

Welcome! I would have to say that a2 is pretty easy as far as modding goes. If you would like some more info on modding check out the Fleetops modding guide. alot of it only applies to Fleetops(a heavy modification of a2) but you might find some of it useful. http://guide.fleetops.net/guide/modding The first few sections, up until the odf section, you should find very useful. Mostly general info there.

I also recommend looking at FO, but thats just me. I love it, and I think it has a lot more capability than regular a2, but it may be easier to start with stock. There are alot more people who can help you with stock tbh. However, if you do get into FO, let me know if you need any help. I am always glad to explain or even do minor tasks for anyone who asks.

Only some of the games are free, mostly the ones by Westwood. Tiberium Wars, Tiberian Twilight, and Red Alert 3 would definitely not be free, but older ones like C&C 95 or Tiberian Sun I think are for free download at EA's site.

Yeah, they wouldn't want to offer their newest "bestseller" for free, rite? :p

The ones you can get are Tiberian Sun (including Firestorm), Tiberian Dawn (the very first CnC game, I think) and the first Red Alert.

In my opinion, though, TibSun is still the best CnC game.

Aaah! What did I write? :cry2: Yeah, you're right, I meant A2. **** A1 won't let its name be typed...

For A1/2 editing another good place to look in to (for stock) is Starbase 34 *** Link remove By Hellkite ***

Ok, thank you for the heads up. I'll check it out and see how I like it. I might register there if I like it.

Also I do have a question, I've tried checking out what kinds of files and what games the downloads section supports but I wasn't able to get to see any files, something about not having that permission to access it yet. I guess I'll wait and see, after all, good things do come to those who wait, right?

You get access to the Downloads section by post count and reputation point.
We, the staff, think that only people who are engaged in our community should have full access to the Downloads to prevent mod theft and "simple file harvesting". :)

Huet, even if the rule says "permanent ban" it does not mean that you are banned. You received a warning for posting the link. If you want to post links of websites that are not in the "Affiliates" list you can PM a Staff Member and ask for verification.

I'm ok with that. I'll just wait until I can check out the downloads and for now, just have fun and learn more about the featured games, mostly Armada, and of course learn about other games that I might end up liking.

We used to be affiliated but due to a mis-understanding mostly on my part it was dissolved and we haven't looked into renewing it yet.

It's normally two weeks, so if you continue being active and participating like you are in a fortnight I have no doubt in my mind you'll be able to see what we have on offer.

A2 has a lot more material these days, however I am one of the few left in the community who started out on A1 when A2 wasn't even announced as being in development. Either is a great place to start and if you can mod A2 you can mod A1 and pretty much visa versa. :)

Thank you all for the kind welcome.

I was browsing around looking for Milkshape3D and I found their site, finally. Well reading their site, I found something quite interesting. They are requesting people to share their software and that also includes the activation codes. Isn't that something cool? In my opinion it could save money.

If someone could share that code, I would be able to save my money for my family, mostly my wife because its just her and I right now.

I think you have the wrong website, there's nothing on chumbalum soft about "exchanging" or giving away your own registration keys, sounds a bit dodgy to me mate. Why would he even bother to charge to register milkshape if he then just says to everyone to give away their own keys..? :naughty:

I believe I am mistaken. There was on the ordering page information that mentioned the words share it right after information on how to order it. On second glance it looks like it is actually another form of purchase.

They are charging way to much for the software in my opinion, its like an arm and a leg for something that most people use for fun right? It seems too much for that kind of thing.

Milkshape's actually pretty cheap compared to some other software out there, and as far as I know it's the only program with exporter/importers for Armada 2 (I'm more than likely wrong, and if someone knows an exporter/importer for blender, then that'd be great to be proven wrong :worship:).
You could look in to Blender, it's free, but the plugins and exporters are sometimes very buggy, and so far I've not come across plugins for Armada.

Milkshape: 25€ if i remember
3DSMax: $3500 roughly for non-educational/non-governmental (ie: a "commercial" license). It's generally considered the industry standard (though I've known alot of people to use Blender, zbrush, lightwave and many other tools in combination with or instead of 3dsmax), and is definitely waaaay too expensive for the average game modder and kind of puts it in perspective a bit when it comes to "arm and a leg" for modelling software lol.

I have started using the full version of Milkshape3D and you were right, it was acutally pretty chead, after I decided what I could easily do without and weighed the usefulness for Milkshape3D I decided to get it, that was yesterday.

Now to start creating my own models and to get some practice!
