• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

We have a policy of fairness and a non harassment environment, with the staff quick to act on the rare occasion of when this policy is breached. Feel free to register and join our community.

Very short summary:

I'm retiring from Armada 2 modding.
I am not retiring from modelling or texturing.
I am most definitely not leaving MSFC.

Full explanation:

Some of you may have noticed another unannounced absence on my part recently. Part of it was an unplanned computer upgrade. It had lasted eight years (well, the motherboard and processor had...) but in the end it started failing. I had planned a major upgrade later this year, and brought that forward - but it did mean waiting a few weeks while I waited for the savings to grow.

The main reason for it though, and for this thread by extension, is the realisation that Armada 2 became more a chore than anything. I think I started to notice this a while ago - if you look at my recent files you see a tendency to rush anything not related to modelling and texturing - but thought it was just one of the periods of disinterest we've all had. I thought that going without the computer would pique my interest.

It didn't. I missed modelling, I missed texturing (never thought I would say that ) but nothing else. Not the coding, not the hardpointing - basically, none of the actual modding part.

I did, however, miss MSFC. Call me corny/clichéd/sentimental - but we have a great community, and I'm glad to be a part of it. I didn't want to do my invisible man impression and just skedaddle.

I would have posted this sooner, I made the decision a few weeks ago now, but believe it or not it was hard to find the right words. I had long posts that completely missed the point, short ones that seemed only to serve as attention magnets. An essay's worth of justification, a leaflet's worth of reason.

That's all very rambly - and frankly rather boring. Honestly, that last bit was really wishy-washy wasn't it? :D - so here's the short version. Again:

I'm retiring from Armada 2 modding.
I am not retiring from modelling.
I am most definitely not leaving MSFC.

There's only one more thing to say:

It's good to be back .

It's sad to see another person retire, but understandable. Of course what's not sad is that you're staying at MSFC! So long as you don't leave we'll be happy. :)

I totally understand, being in the same situation myself. Glad to see you're not leaving MSFC and yeah I find the modding part a bore this is what I am just releasing my work and that is it.

Good luck with any future endeavours and great to see you'll be staying and sticking around with us.

You see, this is why I don't want to leave. Cheers guys :).

Possibly. I have a serious backlog of stuff on my harddrive I need to sort through some time, and as I said I still enjoy modelling and texturing.

I'd like to just release the basic source files (model+textures) so that whoever wants can port them to whatever they want.

As for other games: I won't rule it out entirely, but it is doubtful. Armada 2 was all I used really. I dabbled in Homeworld, but the scripting there is even more complicated and tedious - plus a lot of things (unit pictures, descriptions, backgrounds) require tools that either exist only as dead links or refuse to run on a modern system.

It is a shame amateur, but quite understandable.

The sad part is, there are some of us around that might still be working on our mods, if there was still any community left that showed the slightest bit of interest...

I think the problem is that when you (the modder) decide to do big projects you put pressure on yourself to do the best you can, constantly improve and to get the job done fast. I know I'm guilty of this. When we do that to our selves it turns our hobby into work and sucks the fun out of it. I don't think there is one solution for this. Now I'm not saying don't retire. I get it, I really do. All I am saying is that if the urge to do an odf or HP a model comes around don't fight it:cool: Glad your back and look forward to seeing more of you model work.

Hello:
I can understand how you feel and I understand that you retire from Armada2 modding, but I am very to know that you will not retire from MSFC and from 3d modelling.

Maybe, if you feel like it, you can talk to people so you send the model and others can do the modding part? I think that can work for any game.

Good luck with your endeavours! .
