• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

We have a policy of fairness and a non harassment environment, with the staff quick to act on the rare occasion of when this policy is breached. Feel free to register and join our community.

Well considering this is a Sci-Fi forum, I thought I would ask you guys about this gem.

Known by two different names, depending which part of the world you come from, either Decent: FreeSpace - The Great War, or Conflict: FreeSpace - The Great War (can hardly tell they are the same game, can you?).

When my family purchased our original PC (A beastly 450 MHz Pentium 2 with 64mb! of RAM, 10 gig hard drive space (which we were told that we were crazy, we could never use all that space!) and an intense 4mb of RAM nVidia Riva 128 graphics card), this game came with it. I think mainly because I believe FreeSpace was one of the first games to come released on a DVD, and my computer had a DVD-ROM (in 1998).

Rather than fully explain it here, I'll provide the Wikipedia link, as I skimmed through it, and it does do the game justice in its explanation,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Descent:_FreeSpace_–_The_Great_War

My opinion of the game, it was just simply amazing. It had a great story, awesome gameplay, great graphics and fantastic AI, for a game released in 1998. Flying a little starfigher alongside massive capital ships, escorting said capital ships through asteroid fields, those nerve wracking moments when it looks like all hope is lost as you and your last remaining wingman wait for the Terran starfleet to warp in just in the nick of time.. Writing about all this makes me so want to play it again, although I'm not sure how it would go on modern processors :(

There was a second game released, FreeSpace 2, which continued the story from the first game, however, the game ends quite abruptly after a lengthy campaign, and to this day (the sequel launched in 1999) there has been no official explanation as to what happened at the end of FreeSpace 2, as it was like one of those end of season cliffhangers, only for the show to get cancelled.

The second game was released for free to be downloaded over the internet, along with its source code, however, being at work, there's only so far I will travel on the internet, maybe at home I'll have a better look, as I couldn't find the download links :(

So, wondering if anyone else here has played this, and if you haven't, why haven't you? :D

I agree, if you haven't played, you need to right now. This is so far my favorite space sim of all time. I still play it from time to time because It had a wonderful storyline. I remember by the I was done, I liked it soo much, I went back and played it a second time.:lol2: I rarely do that with games too.

The AI was also impressive.

It is an open source game now too, So I"m surprised there aren't more mods for it.

Good to see someone who has at the very least heard of the game! Everyone I know is like; 'Whats that?'

I tried filling my lust for some sort of closure by playing a fan made project that was a community effort to 'finish the story', but it just wasn't the same.

I only got the second game 5 or 6 years ago, after downloading it, as even when the second game was still on the shelves in the stores, it was VERY rare in Australia, I only ever saw it the one time, and never again. That was also at some obscure computer store as well.

I'm surprised that there isn't, or wasn't at least, a larger modding community for it, despite almost having a cult following in some circles.

Actually now that you mention it, I do remember about 4 years ago seeing it at the local EB Games, nobody bought it, they had like 3 copies there for ages!

This sounds pretty cool, and there's a Linux version of the open-source version so I don't have to mess around with Wine! Downloading now.:)

Well its obvious what must be done Kat, rip a hole through the space time continuum and grab a copy of it, don't bother with money, by the time they realized what happened, the petty theft would be forgotten.

Awesome! My goal in life is complete knowing that one extra person will be playing FreeSpace. I hope you enjoy it!

Ah excellent stuff!

I would have put more media into my original post, however I was at work.

If you aren't convinced: watch these videos then ask yourself, why haven't I been doing my part to stop the Shivan threat!

You aren't the only one dreaming of a FreeSpace 3...

Well, that was disappointing. I am unable to run the installer either natively in Linux or through Wine. Basically, the instructions to install the version of Java necessary to run the installer on Ubuntu are obsolete. The download location is gone and the alternative can't render the window for the installer properly.

That is terrible! Well, I run Windows, so I have no idea how to help you with a Linux issue, as my experience is fairly limited with it.

I did quite a brief google search and found that people were having issues as well (although, seemed to be a bunch of other kinds of issues), and someone linked this,

http://icculus.org/~ravage/freespace2/

Some kind of installer package as far as I can tell, maybe it can help? Although maybe you seen it already!

Wow! This game has as many mods and add ons as A2. That says a lot for it and the engine. "She might be a little old, but she's sure got style!"

It also helps the game went open sources. This allowed the game engine to be dramatically upgraded.

Can this be used with a Win7 32bit OS? Certainly looks like a great deal of fun.
