• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

To be totally honest I didn't know where to put this, as this seemed as good a place as any.

I have learned today that Star Trek Online is having a contest to design the next Enterprise (1701-F) for their game.

Information Below:
Design the Next Enterprise | Star Trek Online Official Site

Coming December 9!

We're working with our friends at CBS and Intel to turn the design of the next Enterprise over to you, Star Trek's most dedicated fans. We'll convert the best design into a ship in Star Trek Online, but that's not where it stops. Here's what contestants can win:

  • Grand Prize: Custom, STO-painted Alienware M11x laptop; STO Collector's Edition; STO Lifetime Membership; inclusion of design in STO; and a 3-D model of the winning design.
  • Second Prize: Alienware laptop (no custom paint job), STO Collector's Edition and an STO Lifetime Membership.
  • Third Prize: STO Collector's Edition, STO Lifetime Membership and an Intel Core i7-875k processor.
  • Fourth Prize: STO Collector's Edition and an STO Lifetime Membership.
  • Twenty-one Honorable Mentions: Standard-edition copy of STO and a Star Trek Online poster.

We're setting up a spceial tool for you to submit your designs, and it'll appear December 9, 2010. Be sure to check back in for your chance to Design the Next Enterprise!

Well I am considering entering but it all depends on the requirements and needs that no doubt will be outlined on the 9th of December. I just hope they aren't after another ugly rip off design but something new. Let's face it many of STO designs are hideously ugly, well at least in my eyes. I like to make pretty ships.

I also hope you can submit 3D models as my 2D skills leave much to be desired.

I might give this a try myself. Got a few ideas I would like to try out.

Sounds interesting, I've already read some pretty heated discussions about it at Trekmovie.com. I assume that the design guidelines will be based on the "established" STO aesthetics. Which equals ugly IMHO. Those guys really have to learn a thing or two when it comes to making fed ships.

That said, I wonder what happened to the Enterprise-E? Was it finally destroyed in STO? :p

Or decommissioned as it would be pretty old, much like the 1701 when it was slated for decommissioned/destroyed over Genesis.

Yeah I am going to wait till the 9th of December when I decide it I am going to enter. I'll probably enter for a chance to with the laptop, or a lifetime subscription to the game. :)

She would have to have been destroyed. Ships from that era have 100 to 120 year spaceframe life. I'm going to wait to see if the restraints are within my marginal modeling skills

Its a neat idea letting the fans have some input in the game.
However, it feels like the more people get sucked into STO, the less people there are left around these parts modding Armada:(

Let's wait for more info on this. If they allow 2d submissions, I'll think about it.

STO might be a nice game, but as long as it isn't moddable, many of us won't play it. I mean, who likes to be forced to look at ****py designs?

I think I might try. What can it hurt? I wonder what the 'tool' is.

I prefer modding a2 over any mmo, but the prospect of winning something like the first 4 prizes, or even just a free copy of STO is pretty awesome.

Until they can produce more ships without ****py designs forget it. Although I'm still buying my copy of STO for the sheer battle factors.

Build it in 3D then just make a set of plan views.

Where did I put my sketch book :)
They are some... odd... looking ships in STO (I don't play, I looked around the wiki). But I think something nice could be done with some of the characteristics.

I heard it's for US residents only, so that throws me out. I get so sick of competitions like this only being for one country, there are many fans and potential entrees from other countries that could submit good designs.

Yeah, it's stupid that it's for one country only. I remember that the ST: Legacy wallpaper contest was also for US only, but there were many non-US residents that complained (myself included), so they turned that contest into worldwide.

Perhaps they will turn this contest into worldwide as well.

Me too. I should have known it, these US companies care only for their US customers. The rest of the world is utterly irrelevant to them (I can only say: "Europe? Isn't that somewhere near Afghanistan?").

Don't quote me on this, but I think I heard somethign once that running an international competition involved all sorts of things to be done in every country representative, such as calculate tax/cash worth etc. Probably why the big companies only run them in their own country...

That said though, it still seems a little unfair to me - they know they've got an international fanbase yet they only cater to part of it? Isn't that a little like opening a shop and refusing to sell to a certain nationality?

Still...I don't think they'd pick an excellent design; probably just a slightly modified Sovvie'. :(

Yeah I think it might be because of some tax thing with prizes. I heard that some people aren't bothered with the prizes and would be happy to just have the credit for designing the next Enterprise.

Either way very annoyed at this, I mean come on, the US residents probably only make up 50-60% of their fanbase/customers. In any-case they have concreted by desire not to get the game. I'd rather get the Star Wars one.

It is unfortunate that the competition is only for North America. I think it will suffer greatly for cutting out the larger part of the world like that.

While on this topic the rules have been officially released. I have my design in the early sketching process and will hopefully be able to coerce my sister(a graphic design artist) to using her already super fancy Mac to convert my sketches into a computerized orthographic ship view. Thankfully that is covered under the rules of entry.

I"ll try to post of my humble ship design later. If anything I can hope that some day my own skill will allow me to build a model of it for A2 and play it there.

Yeah I know the guy whom designed the Luna class (USS Titan) has his design almost done, I have been following it on deviantART. So you have some fierce competition. It would've been nice for other countries to enter, but that's life unfortunately.

Could you post a link to his page? I would love to scope out the competition.:naughty:

Nuts, don't suppose England counts as a State?
All those evenings wasted - though to be frank it wasn't shaping up to be grand enough to bear the name anyway.

Perhaps we could hold our own thread here? The next Enterprise as voted by MSFC?

Dang, that's a bummer. But its easier to manage I suppose. I can just imagine their reaction when they actually find a good design from some obscure country HAH! Well, this pretty much rules out my ship. I was just getting some design passes done yesterday. *SIGH*

I've also looked at the current entries. I think "interesting" is the right word for em'. Some are even cute, some are just shameless rips! Shame! :p

Yup. I saw the Excalibur in there (our good old Excalibur).

I do really think it would be great if we had our own little contest. Not restricted to the foolish rules of the STO one. (And also, not just restricted to models. Not everyone can model.)

I agree, it should be a design contest not a modelling one. And finalists should be voted on by all members, to allow for a fair vote and selection.

Wow, just look at the gallery. I think the vast majority of ships not drawn in ms-paint are all complete ripoffs. There are like 5 Century classes, 2 of the blue enterprise project thing, and several others I have seen before.:lol2: Maybe I have a chance after all.

Edit:
You just got a 5 star vote from me.
Ditto

Not to mention the Excalibur class. Most people love ripping off others, I would say with almost certain most of those designs aren't the original work of those submitting them.

Yeah, I wonder how STO is gonna go about filtering out those ripped off designs?

It is just sad. It really is.
