Hey, my first model of the year 2007!!

This is my WIP of the Corona Class Heavy Assault Ship. Yes, it is an own design.

In 2090 the European Alliance launched their first major warship, the Libertè. This first concept of a space borne warfare unit was a big success, and three more vessels were launched. The EA was then the second armed power in space, after the commercial American-Australian "Fortune Consortium" putted an experimental spaceship with light weaponry into space (thus eventually breaking the Weapons-In-Space-Treaty of the Cold War and the later Weapon-Restriction Agreement of 2009).
These ships were still build on Earth and then launched into space...

Forty years later, more classes of warships of either Chinese or American-Australian and European origin entered fleet service, the European Alliance opened up a secret facility in the Asteroid Belt. The secret did not remain that secret for long, a five kilometer assembly yard and massive cargo shipping couldn't be hidden effectively.

The EA was up to build the largest ship to that date: the Corona class Heavy Assault ship. Many smaller caliber guns, one huge double-projectile rail gun plus long range turrets and Naval Infantry deployment.

*Drumroll* and Update:

The overall shape is now done. Some adjustments here and there.

Now I am randomly throwing details at it

:) :D Hehe. Actually the USS Sulaco of Aliens "inspired" me to this design.

Looks good.

Just need to fix a little surface mapping errors.

I got back to my high-poly mesh and added several smaller details. Latest images:

Is that strip for symbotic reasons, or just purely decorative?

Does the strip serve a purpose, other than "looks cool"?:p

Depends on if you want it to serve a purpose or to simply look cool.

No, seriously:
When textured, the ship will look quite grey, in several tunes, yes, but I thought that a little colour would be nice and blue fits very well with a European Design.

And currently the strip serves me as background for the registration number, lol.

The strip is similar to the Red "Camouflage" pattern Narn warships have: to enhance the view

Okay, you got me.

I could apply other colours to the strip as well:

Hm, maybe a colour code or unit colour...

A "Battle wing" or "Battle fleet" or "Task force" symbol. With the ID number on the strip, that's what it looks like. Which the color is the primary marker indicating the group it's assigned to. Great idea EA. That's like what I am planning to do within RA.

That would make the ship the

EAV Le Redoutable CNG-12, 1st TCW, 1st CSTG

Colour Code = Blue

EAV = European Alliance Vessel; CNG = Cruiser, nuclear propelled, guided missile equipped; TSW = Tactical Cruiser Wing; CSTG = Compound Spaceborne Task Group

You sure do have a talent here. I would love to see this in a little animation clip, once it's completed.

okay, I began the texture mapping, as I had no futher ideas where to add which details...

And I think mesh-wise it looks great. Texture-mapping will still take some time and I will have some outcome tomorrow CET (it's evening as I post this and I am too tired for modelling)

I have her ready! Finally!

EAV Le Redoutable CNG-12 (blue) and EAV Berlin CNG-23 (red).

Currently I am mainly playing around with 3ds Max to get some experience in camera animations and rendering of short clips.

I am working on a small battle scene, where two Coronas track down a Container Freighter...

Besides that, I have several "name sets" for the Corona in the works:
Corona CNG-01 (Yellow) 1st EXW
Solaris CNG-06 (Orange) 2nd EXW
Le Triomphant CNG-10 (Blue) 1st TSW, 1st CSTG
Le Redoutable CNG-12 (Dark Blue) 1st TSW, 2nd CSTG
Berlin CNG-23 (Red) 2nd TSW, 3rd CSTG
Hamburg CNG-26 (Dark Red) 2nd TSW, 4th CSTG
Trafalgar CNG-32 (Green) 3rd TSW, 5th CSTG
Waterloo CNG-35 (Dark Green) 3rd TSW, 6th CSTG

I've worked out how the number and colour system works:
Every Wing (TSW = Tactical Spaceborne Wing, or EXW = Experimental Wing), has a number, let's say 3. So all ships of the 3rd TSW have a registry that begins with a 3. All ships with a reg number starting with a 2 would belong to the 2nd TSW.
The ship's colour then is dependant on which CSTG (Compound Spaceborne Task Group) the vessel is attached to. Then every TSW has a special colour, like Green is the colour of the 3rd TSW. The CSTGs then have the same colour but in different shades, like from Green to Dark Green.

And in wartimes... everything messes up again. Then your task groups are a nice flight of many colours, like a rainbow.

This is the first scene shot of my little animation. It is a test of how I can sophisticate several animation sequences, like the camera movement and the two fired shots.

The only thing that is missing: stars! I can render them into a still image using a background function, but when I animate it - including a camera position change, it looks funny, to say the least. I am currently trying around with a box set in the background, on which a star texture is applied.

Right Click And Save to : 5,02 MB

After this scene, I want to have a reverse angle look on it, where you see the two railgun bullets come closer to the freighter and... well, you see that when I have that shot done :)

In the end, I will release a fully rendered short story... hey I could use some voice actors.

If you don't mind an Aussie voice I would be happy to help.

I am downloading the file now. :)

EDIT: Looks great Intrepid.

Looks good EA. Your getting much better.

As far as stars go, when you are close to a planetary body, it's almost impossible for a camera to capture the stars in the background. It's because of the large body reflects a star's light, thus making to much "Light Noise". Just like bing in the center of a very well lit city at night, trying to see the stars in the sky.

So, you can make it without stars. If you do, I'd suggest something interesting, like a nebula in the background.... just for fun, and is much more colorful.

Well, the planet in the background is Mars... and a nebula cannot be seen from there.
