It’s time for one of the most beloved sci-fi classics of the ‘90s to come back—and the man behind it the first time around is back for more.

Variety reports that Warner Bros. has ordered a reboot of Babylon 5, produced and written by Straczynski as part of a deal between Warner Bros. TV and Straczynski’s Studio JMS. The series is not a continuation of the show, but a “from the ground up” reboot of the cult classic 1993 series, which ran across five seasons and seven made-for-TV movies until 1998. Set in a future where humanity has gone into the stars and found a plethora of alien civilizations to attempt to live in harmony, Babylon 5 followed Earthforce officer John Sheridan (Bruce Boxleitner) as he took command of the titular space station Babylon 5, a hub for diplomatic meetings, trade negotiations, and eventually a staging ground among renewed conflicts between the civilizations of the world and even humanity’s own descent into totalitarianism.

The series was beloved for its dark sci-fi plots and its approach to a massive, intertwined narrative over the course of its seasons and movies—and spinoffs like the TNT series Crusade—to tell a long form story, rather than plots-of-the-week, with iconic alien characters like Mira Furlan’s Delenn and Andreas Katsulas’ petty villain turned spiritual figure G’Kar. Although the series came to an end in 1998, it inspired a whole universe of tie-in novels, and its influence can be felt everywhere from the likes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine to Straczynski’s own work collaborating with the Wachowskis on Sense8.

We’ll bring you more on the CW’s plans for Babylon 5 as and when we learn them.

I never got in to the series the first time around. I'm excited.

Noooo! Why can't people come up with original ideas.
Yes, Babylon 5 had flaws, and yes a remake using modern technology has so much potential for the VFX. But there's no need for a "reboot." The story is fine, and you know they'll just make all the main characters twelve and try to sex it up to "sell it to a wider audience." Then string it out to squeeze every penny out of it.
Just look at BSG, the effects were great and so was the acting, but they blatantly had no idea what they were doing besides stringing it out to maximum extent.
Rant over.

I never got in to the series the first time around. I'm excited.
Season 1 was very hard to get in to and very dry, which is a shame because it probably turned off a lot of people. But when you watch it again for a second (and third, and forth) time, you realise just how many hints and lead-ins were actually in the first season. I would argue that one of the episodic characters that we only ever see in one of the early first season episodes is one of the most pivotal plot points in the entire series.

Worst idea ever. A new series set in the same universe is a much better idea. B5 is a gem and doesn't need a reboot that'll probably mess up more than anything.

So I just read a quote from J. Michael Strazinski on why it will be a reboot.

The network understands the uniqueness of Babylon 5 and is giving me a great deal of latitude with the storytelling. As noted in the announcement, this is a reboot from the ground up rather than a continuation, for several reasons. Heraclitus wrote, 'You cannot step in the same river twice, for the river has changed, and you have changed.' In the years since B5, I've done a ton of other TV shows and movies, adding an equal number of tools to my toolbox, all of which I can bring to bear on one singular question: If I were creating Babylon 5 today, for the first time, knowing what I now know as a writer, what would it look like? How would it use all the storytelling tools and technological resources available in 2021 that were not on hand then?""How can it be used to reflect the world in which we live, and the questions we are asking and confronting every day? Fans regularly point out how prescient the show was and is of our current world; it would be fun to take a shot at looking further down the road. So we will not be retelling the same story in the same way because of what Heraclitus said about the river. There would be no fun and no surprises. Better to go the way of Westworld or Battlestar Galactica where you take the original elements that are evergreens and put them in a blender with a ton of new, challenging ideas, to create something fresh yet familiar. To those asking why not just do a continuation, for a network series like this, it can't be done because over half our cast are still stubbornly on the other side of the Rim. How do you telling continuing story of our original Londo without the original Vir? Or G'Kar? How do you tell Sheridan's story without Delenn? Or the story of B5 without Franklin? Garibaldi? Zack?"

"The original Babylon 5 was ridiculously innovative: the first to use CGI to create ships and characters, and among the very first to shoot widescreen with a vigorous 5.1 mix. Most of all, for the first time, Babylon 5 introduced viewers accustomed to episodic television to the concept of a five-year arc with a pre-planned beginning, middle and end...creating a brand new paradigm for television storytelling that has subsequently become the norm. That tradition for innovation will continue in this new iteration, and I hope to create additional new forms of storytelling that will further push the television medium to the edge of what's possible."

"Let me conclude by just saying how supportive and enthusiastic everyone at The CW has been and is being with this project. They understand the unique position Babylon 5 occupies both in television and with its legions of fans, and are doing everything they can to ensure the maximum in creative freedom, a new story that will bring in new viewers while honoring all that has come before. Onward!"

The bit about Westworld's example of taking the basic premise and running in a new direction with it has me optimistic. Nobody could replace Katsulas, Furlan, O'Hare, Doyle, or Biggs, and by extension their characters can't really be used again. But, you can get a lot of mileage out of the question of what things would be like if those people never were assigned to B5 in the first place.

On a less meta note, something that bugs me on rewatches is that the Shadows lack any redeeming qualities. The Vorlons ultimately win the conflict when the League is dissolved and the Alliance is formed, and the younger races adopt a lot of Vorlon tech due to the White Star program. They also have Kosh as an example of a Vorlon who still truly believes in the cause and wants what is best for the younger races. By contrast, the Shadow philosophy of using competition to drive innovation is abandoned and Shadow derived tech is banned outright. They also lack a Kosh counterpart. The two factions are supposed to be equally bad, but the narrative doesn't support this. In this reboot, I would like to see the positives of Shadow philosophy and more warning signs of Vorlon assholery.

What he said did make sense. That said, they could have also taken it to a point to after Captain Lockley's command. They could have gotten Boxleitner to make cameos as President Sheridan from time to time. I know that in the original, Delen outlived Sheridan but, noting says that Delen would attend every diplomatic event with him. I will be cautiously optimistic for now.

They also could have simply rebooted Crusade, which I would have been quite happy with.
Yes, that would've been my preference or perhaps a dilgar war sequel that shows the shadows were behind the Dilgar expansion or something.

Still what JMS said makes me feel a little better about the reboot. As long as they don't recast the mains like G'kar etc I might enjoy it. I guess we'll see.

Yeah I can't be excited for this, the CW has horrible VFX, even by today's standards. Odds are the old cartoony fake effects from the 90s will still look better. But far worse than VFX has proven to be the quality of writing in CW shows, followed closely by much of the acting. It took HBO Max to become involved to make Superman & Lois any good, and that's the exception, not the rule. This is one of my favorite shows of all time, it does not need any rebooting, the narrative created for the original series was perfect as it was.

Despite JMS' involvement, the fact remains that this is now going to be a CW show and that in and of itself makes me cringe to no end. I really dislike the way CW shows have evolved in the past decade or so since the days of the old WB network.

If this had been a Netflix, Amazon or HBO Max show, sure I'd be on board. But of all networks, the CW? Ugh, no thanks.

This is a grim day for Babylon 5.

Ok, so this actually doesn't look bad.
*Insert quiet optimism here*

Does it make me a bad person to say that when I saw this, I thought of Sliders?

It does look interesting though.

This could be really good, but it's too early to tell. Although with JMS in charge, even if the animation turns out to be meh, the storytelling should be first class.

Ugh. I hate the cell shaded 3D animation style..... But I'm excited that it could introduce a whole new generation to B5!
