• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

Well in my own view this is something that should have been available from the start. As it is, a software officially created emulator grants users the ability to play "certain" games (it seems that each game has to be "forced" to be compatible with the Xbox One, so only certain titles are slated). The Emulator has been stated as a free download, and if One games are anything to go by then 360 games will require either downloading or installing directly to your drive.

Anyway, just incase theres anyone who might be considering getting an Xbox One at least there should be some games in your collection which will work fine. Oh and it also looks like Sony won't be doing the same for PS4.

"This will be a day long remembered...."

As long as Fable 2 and Halo: Reach eventually make it on to that list...methinks I'm good.

I remember reading something about this. To maximize performance, they're custom building emulators for specific games rather than using an all-purpose emulator. Also said you'll be able to use your 360 game disks.

As long as Fable 2 and Halo: Reach eventually make it on to that list...methinks I'm good.
I still want to replace my dead 360 at some point, but if those two get emulation I may consider getting an XB1 instead.

I totally agree. I read this last week and it's a step in the right direction if you ask me.

So this was released just yesterday.

http://news.xbox.com/2015/11/09/introducing-your-first-104-xbox-one-backward-compatibility-games/

100+ games are available in the first batch, more will be coming next month.

Apparently there are licencing concerns which means Microsoft has to negotiate with each developer/publisher to get the rights to allow them to become backwards compatible.

While the first batch is a little disappointing with many major titles absent from the launch titles. Here is hoping that some of the more popular titles will be included in the follow up months.

About time. But seriously, how did these supposed "experts" not see that this would be necessary right from the start?

Backwards compatibility is a relatively recent development for consoles. The PS2 was the first one to have it. They probably didn't anticipate that the backlash against removing it would be this bad, especially since they've decided to keep the 360 supported and in production with a shiny new model. Sony also spread misinformation about the PS4 to trip Microsoft up. Also, it's harder to implement than you might think. The 360 and XB1 use different CPU types so that needs to be emulated in software, which involves recreating the entire physical functionality of the old chip as a program that will run at least as fast on the new chip. They could have done what Nintendo did with the Wii and GBA or what Sony did with the early PS3s and included hardware from the previous console as a way to improve compatibility and avoid direct emulation, but that would either inflate the XB1's price tag or reduce profit margins on something that's already a loss leader.
