World of Warships.

Howdy y'all! I have downloaded and tried this game and I must say, it is extremely enjoyable. It is free to play but you can also get a subscription to get some extra stuff. You can play as either a destroyer, cruiser, battleship, or carrier. I have done the cruiser and destroyer so far and have fared better in the cruiser. This game is from the makers of World of Tanks and World of Warplanes.

I've been playing this since I got my new PC and I've been enjoying it too. I'm writing this as I just got deleted playing a Tier 4 in a Tier 5 match - although I did take a T5 down with me and now its finished I see I ended up middle of the team in score :)

I'm now at Tier 5 in the British cruiser line, Tier 4 in the German Battleship, Cruiser and Destroyer line, Tier 3 in the French cruiser line and just started grinding the Japanese.

Battleships are the "tanks", they have big guns, slow turrets and are generally slow and sluggish but with lots of armour and hit points.
Destroyers are small, stealthy, fast and agile, but thin skinned.
Cruisers sit in the middle and vary from line to line.

I started off playing the British cruiser line - which I now know is generally not the smartest thing to do. Cruisers aren't as fast or sneaky as destroyers and they don't have the armour to compensate. The British line is different in that they have less hit points but are a bit sneakier. They also only get one ammo type, semi armour piercing, and have smaller calibre guns. This means that while they are good at killing destroyers they are not so good against battleships as the usual cruiser tactic against those (especially if they are a higher tier) is to load the HE and burn them to death. Can't do that with the Brits.

I decided to try the German destroyers because they aren't one trick wonders at early tiers like the Japanese (torpedo boats, bad guns) or American (gun boats, lousy torps) destroyers and they have bow torpedo launchers. However whilst I've managed (somehow) to get to Tier 4 I still haven't learned the art of destroyer combat. I thought I'd enjoy it as I like stealthy approaches in other games, but whilst I can get into trouble I haven't yet mastered the art of getting out, and I get killed pretty quick.

I tried German battleships as I'd already started the grind in order to get on destroyers. Some battleships are better at long range, the German armour arrangement (and poor gun accuracy) makes them good brawlers. I'm not doing too badly, but you must keep an eye out for torpedoes as they don't turn well.

Early German cruisers are $%*&, no other way to put it. But the Tier 4 isn't too bad, so long as you use the AP ammo, the HE isn't particularly useful (unless going against upper tier battleships, your AP bounces so you may as well try to burn them).

My destroyer experience has brought me back to the Brit cruisers. I now play them like I want to play my destroyers, sneak into the fight, run circles around the bad guys and lob torps at them at point blank range. I usually get killed but I usually kill more of them in the process, even when up tiered.

DON'T play the French first time out. Their cruisers are just as bad as the Brits except they don't aren't quite as sneaky. They have the usual mix of AP and HE ammo and they have torps, but unless you know what you are doing you will struggle more than the Brits.

If you want to learn more, I suggest going on youtube. These two links are good for learning tips and techniques and ship comparisons.

However if you want entertainment you can't go wrong with The Mighty Jingles (I was watching this non-stop when I was off sick for three weeks last year).

Keep an eye out for kjc733. I'm usually playing Co-Op Battles as I still don't feel ready to play PvP.

EDIT - Holy Cow! Tier 5 Emerald in a Tier6/7 match!!! Not going to end well!!

I'm now T5 in the German Cruiser line (and having a blast with the Konogsberg), Tier 4 in the Jap Cruiser line (loving the Kuma), Tier 3 in the Jap Battleship line (S%$£) and Tier 4 in the French Cruiser line (getting better).
For some reason Wargaming gifted me a voucher entitling me to 70% off "Hero" packs and after much internal debate with myself I have just made my first ever (and probably only) in game purchase - I'm one of those people that like to have something physical when I buy it.

I got the Scharnhorst pack. The Scharnhorst itself has been removed from regular purchase but would have been about £35 (which is why I wouldn't normally buy anything, these ships are expensive!). It came with a Captain, 4 extra port slots (about £5) and 2500 gold "dabloons" (about £10) - and because of the discount it cost me £11.50.

As its Tier 7 I probably won't be playing much of it just yet as I still haven't got past Tier 4 in any Battleship. But my voucher only lasted 7 days and Scharnhorst is not usually available - and I've been saving my "free" dabloons for it (until they removed it).

EDIT
Ok, I lied. I couldn't resist taking her out for a spin. I figured out how to take my captain off of my Tier 4 German Battleship and use it on the Scharnhorst - only a 3pt captain (and the second skill isn't really necessary for the Scharn) but better than no points.
First match I was top tier, found the steering a little unresponsive but the guns turned great and were far more accurate than I expected (especially with minimum upgrades mounted).
The second match was a Tier 8 match. I made a few tweaks, I upgraded the rudder which made it feel like a heavy cruiser - enough that I was able to avoid several torpedoes launched at me. I also improved the gun accuracy. My gut feel that I would be able to sail her like a cruiser was confirmed when I managed to engage (and kill) a destroyer on my own, and I also managed to slug it out with another Scharnhorst - so it's very flexible if sailed right. Unfortunately the enemy Scharnhorst managed to clip me on the bow with a torpedo just as it died and as I'd just used up my repair party to put out some fires I flooded to death, which was rather annoying. Post fight I added another upgrade which increases my Repair Party up time by 40%, hopefully that will reduce future embarrassment (really! Watching my 25% health premium battleship take 30 seconds to flood to death when no one is shooting at it is embarrassing!)
Anyway, both were PvE (I'm not yet ready to do PvP, I want some higher skilled captains for that) and I came in the top three both times, so not bad for a first outing trying to get a feel for a new ship. I think I'm going to get on really well with her...

I have been grinding the ship lines and am now at:
German Cruiser - Tier 5
German Battleship - Tier 5 (but I also have a Tier 7 Scharnhorst)
German Destroyer - Tier 4
British Cruiser - Tier 5
French Cruiser - Tier 5
Japanese Cruiser - Tier 5
Japanese Battleship - Tier 4
Pan Asian Destroyer - Tier 4
American Destroyer - Tier 3
American Cruiser - Tier 3

Tier 4 is a nice gentle tier because of the matchmaking. I love the Tier 4 Japanese (new favourite) and British Cruisers. The Tier 4 Japanese battleship is far better than the horrible Tier 3 once you have some of the performance mods on it otherwise its almost as bad.
I'm still struggling to get to grips with the destroyer gameplay. I've had some good games with the Asian destroyers, but the deep water torps can be both a blessing and a curse.
I've had some success with the Tier 3 US Destroyer, but that may just be because I understand better how to use them.
Tier 5 is horrible. The matchmaking means you usually end up bottom tier in Tier 7 games and it is so hard to survive. The Tier 5 British Cruiser when playing Random battles (against people, not bots) is especially trying - if you get spotted you get focus fired and are dead pretty quick. The only good thing about Tier 5 is that yo start to be eligible for rewards from missions and events (just bonuses for playing (e.g. earn 1000xp and set three fires in a single game)

Anyway, the reason for this post is that the bi-yearly Kings of the Sea tournament is on. Last week it was the qualifiers (I only caught the end and some teams were terrible!). The rest of the event is as follows:
  • May 19 - Round of 32 + Round of 16
  • May 20 - Quarterfinals
  • May 26 - Semifinals and EU final
  • May 27 - International 3rd place and International Final
Some of the teams that play this are seriously hard core "professional" teams. Teams to look out for are OMNI and OM (one is a subset of the other, they usually submit multiple teams) who are usually the favourites to win (although last year they really struggled due to the changes in smoke gameplay), TWA and Wargaming Pay to Win (WPTW). I believe it kicks off at 1200 UTC (1300 BST for those enjoying the sun in the UK).

and individual match details:

UPDATED
Holy mother of God. OMNI (always in the quarter finals and won several years running) and WPTW (last years winner) both got knocked out at the round of 16!

WARNING - some cursing in the following video.

This is one of the most awesome tournament games I have seen, almost matching the final a few seasons ago which literally came down to the final shell and certainly as entertaining.

Oh, and another of the top teams got knocked out at the quarter finals. This is a crazy season!

EDIT - for those that don't know, the louder commentator is Flamuu, he is one of the best players in the world, used to play in these tournaments for OM and will be commentating in St Petersburg at the finals next week.

Kings of the Sea VIII will be kicking off today.
https://worldofwarships.eu/en/news/community/kots-viii-streams/

Day 1: Sun. 10 Mar. 15:00 CET (UTC+1)
Day 2: Sat. 16 Mar. 15:00 CET (UTC+1)
Day 3: Sun. 17 Mar. 15:00 CET (UTC+1)
Regional Finals: Sat. 23 Mar. 11:00 CET (UTC+1)
International Finals: Sun. 24 Mar. 11:00 CET (UTC+1)

This year will be interesting due to the aircraft carrier rework. Until very recently aircraft carrier players operated in a top down RTS style interface and controlled multiple squads of aircraft simultaneously. This allowed them to provide spotting information, attack multiple targets simultaneously and provide fighter air cover.

Aircraft carriers now operate as a first person shooter, with the player directly flying a single squad of aircraft. Personally I feel Wargaming screwed up, especially as it has required a complete rework of how anti-aircraft fire works, a rework of the spotting mechanics and has completely messed up balance. But anyway, it'll be interesting to see how the "professionals" cope and whether or not there will be even teams who prefer not to bring any carriers (the general feeling seems to be that they are that useless!).

And there I was concerned that KoTS would be boring!!!
The intent behind the carrier rework was:
a. To prevent carriers reigning supreme across the battlefield.
b. To reduce the skill gap between "Good" players and "Bad" players.
Carriers used to have multiple squadrons, a good player could set up impossible to dodge cross drops and delete ships almost at will while scouting the battlefield and using fighters to defend their allies. A bad player used to struggle to multitask and so would easily be dominated by the good player.
In tournament games "Good" carrier players would in general concentrate on scouting and allow the ships to make the kills.

Now, carrier players control a single squad at a time. They can't be everywhere at once, they can only do one type of attack, player skill allows you to dodge flak.

So what has happened... well, it's actually widened the skill gap. We are in a worldwide tournament at the quarter final levels and we are seeing significant differences in carrier skill. One player reigns supreme, the other... doesn't. But now the good players are not bothering with scouting and are instead doing frankly disgusting levels of damage. And when they decide that someone is going to die... then they die. At least it used to be possible for AA cruisers and fighters to whittle down the numbers and "deplane" a carrier. But now carriers have infinite numbers of aircraft, fighters are pretty useless and AAA isn't too good either.

Anyway, this was a cracking match, right up with the one which ended with the game balancing on a single destroyer shell.

I have a clan in that game on the North American Server.... who's founded by an Austrailian player (by some odd coincidence)

Two weekends of King of the Sea IX have been and gone and pretty much all the big hitters have already been eliminated. I'll be stocking up on popcorn for the semi's and finals this weekend.

This game had me on the edge of my seat till the end...

In case anyone else is playing, there is a planned split in the Russian Cruiser line coming in a few months time. As part of this, the Tier 5 Kirov and the Tier 10 Moskva will become Premium ships and will be replaced in the tech tree by something else. The last time this happened, if you owned the tech tree ship that was shifted or removed you got to keep that ship and gained the replacement tech tree ship.

What this means - if you play World of Warships you have a couple of months to grind the Russian Cruiser line and if you get Tier 5 you should (when the tree split hits) get a free Premium. The bad news is that you'll need to grind through the Tier 3 Bogatyr - I've just spent the last day doing it and it is by far the worst ship I have had the misfortune to play!!!
