Here we are again. Hello, people, it is time for the Regular Poll.

We as SciFi fans like when stuff goes boom. And the biggest boom you can get is a planet destruction! But not all planet destructions are created equal. Some are lame, and some are just pure awesome.

Did we forget one? Is your favourite planet destruction not on the list? Please, tell us!

One last note: The idea for this poll did not come from us! It was SciFiFan who suggested that question. And you can do that, too. Think you've got a good idea for the Regular poll? Just PM one of us, or post in the latest poll thread. We look forward to your ideas!

Okay, that's it. Stay tuned, we'll return in two weeks with a brand new poll.

Titan AE does it for me. It had the most feeling and impact compared to the rest listed when it all comes down to it. The people were evacuating, the planet was practically defenseless and then you get a massive boom.

On a related note, I also liked how Veridian III exploded in Generations when it got hit by the Nexus in one scene.

If you want to go aold school it is either Alderaan or Carolon. Newer I'll go with the destruction of the Vorash system at the end of SG1 season4

I would have to say the Shadow Death Cloud from B5. With the others something shows up in orbit and fires something at the planet and boom planet is gone and if you are on the other side of the planet then you might not even see it and know it is happening until you blow up.

The death cloud completely surrounds the planet so everybody knows they are about to die and that there is no way to escape. Then its missiles don't detonate on the surface they detonate deep in the core killing the planet from the inside out.

Vulcan from start trek XI would be a close second but it doesn't have the fear factor of having your entire planet surrounded by a massive planet killing machine.

I agree with the Shadow Planet Killer from B5 Season 4. :)

In all honesty, I think I kinda liked the Xindi's destruction of Earth in Enterprise's alternate timeline. I haven't been been exposed to too many planet destruction occasions. By the same token, not terribly fond of them either.

WAIT. Memory just came back. 8472 OWNING that random Borg planet is now my favorite. 9 ships just phase in outta nowhere and BAM!!

Considering I have only seen Star Trek XI, Star Wars and Lost in space planet explosions, my fav would be unnamed planet in Lost in Space due to the time it was done it was rather good for the effects available. :p

I voted other - not because Im a loose cannon, a lone wolf, a solitary eagle, a shadowy character on the periphery, watching and waiting... like to go my own way and lack team playing skills and so suck at Left 4 Dead 2, CoD4 MW Team Deathmatch, Day Of Defeat Source, field hockey and football accordingly...

But because I think the Necromonger Victory Totems destroying a planet in Chronicles Of Riddik was one of the coolest ideas (and also very well executed by the director and spec. effects ) I have ever seen in sci fi - for me, the idea that the planet is over run, the Necromongers have taken all the fresh souls and new recruits they want, and even if you survive the hellish invasion, you wont survive the cleansing of your planet... Unless you are bald, have a serious addiction to homicide, can see in the dark and have a voice that makes walls shatter (never mind glass)!

I just wish that the Riddik films could have expanded on the Necros a wee bit more - really rich visuals and culture - I love the whole Underverse thing too... And the idea of the Holy Half Dead...

Also - wouldnt the necromonger fleet make a welcome addition to A2??

I'll go with Hitchikers guide. The way the Vogon ships lined up around the globe and then, kind of, implode the planet. That was original and cool:D

Agreed - although it was kinda the futuristic equivalent of demolishing a garden shed - there was no... drama... (although everyone DID have their towel, so THAT was ok...)

Good left field choice Avon!

Hmm....

Praxis. Not a "planet", I know, but still. How can you ignore something that made THAT kind of shockwave?

Agreed, that was pretty darn epic, even for today's standards.

On a side note, I liked the effects they used when Serleena obliterated a generic planet in MIB II.

I still need to make my mind on this, though I think I need to mention one that should be on the list ;) : The planet-eating nebula in "Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer." It engulfs the planets and uses tendrils to eat the planet from inside out while all the time it sucks debris and everything else off from the planet and into it's fiery mouth at the center.

As this movie includes aliens I would say it qualify as scifi.

Who knows, maybe it will be this one I vote for, only time will tell. :)

I liked how they depicted the downfall of the Thirteen Colonies of Man in Battlestar Galactica (new).
All the confusion around it, the newscasts that are breaking down, the desperation... how the military tries to struggle against it...

Tigh: It's a retirement prank!
Adama: I don't think so...

The Miniseries is a shining example for a BSG episode anyway.

Hello:
I was also thinking about the destruction of the Colonies in BSG, I know the planets did not actually exploded, but they were obliterated and all the people killed.

The Death Cloud of the Shadows is very cool too, a clear sign for a planet that the end has come and there is no way of escaping it. While the Vorlon planet killing machine is a more classic supership one.

But the truth is that I was thinking in Species8472, who would think that 9 small ships are able to concentrate so much firepower to destroy a planet... in fact, that report the Borg gave said that at least 8 planets were destroyed. That is real power for me :D.

Ok, I thought I should make a new answer in this thread due to two things;

1. So our new members could see this.

2. I have changed my mind about what is my favortite planet destruction in Scifi.

Earlier I said it was Galactus, but I take that back as I now (actually 6 months ago) has discovered Unicron. :D

The way that Unicron destroys planets + what he looks like just makes me go "Wow!" and thus he now is my favorite. :D

Gotta go with the Norway based English reptilian chap here. Chronicles of Rid****'s planet destruction scene was near perfect. I too wish they had done a little more with this story because it is so different
