Question for those who know a lot more than I do:

Is it possible to change the settings for warp drive so that it uses special energy?
I know it can be done for torpedoes.

Just looking for a way to limit a shuttlecraft's range, without disabling warp entirely

No but you could take out the warp and use the cardi impulse booster:thumbsup:

Haven't modded A2 in quite a while, but I do not think that adding a warp flash to the booster weapon is possible. The special effect that is played is some weird glowing on the ship, no idea how they came up with that...

It's hardcoded I believe.

Transwarp would probably make more sense - you can specify where the effect appears, make it cost energy, and, since it's an object traveling faster than light you aren't going to be seeing it anyway :)

If you are using FO, you could make every vessel you want to have warp have a replaceweapon to change the ship into a warp capable one for a cost which has a set amount of time it can remain active for (the replaceweapon).

like Dom said, if you use transwarp, you can specify the warp flash as your sprite effect, and it will look like the ship is warping.

Transwarp is instantaneous...and can't penetrate objects like asteroid fields... soo if there is an asteroid field in the direction you want to transwarp, youd have to transwarp to the field and then travel at impulse until you clear it.. then procede to transwarp again. With Warp, the ship will plot its course around the asteroid field and not have to stop until it reaches its destination. For Shuttles you could specify a really slow warp speed, say like 175-200. and like Dom said use a replaceweapon for it that will automatically change it back to a non warp capable vessel after a time, if you are using FO as a base

Transwarp can have a delay before the ordnance is actually fired, but of course after that is instantaneous (which is fine if you consider how fast you can get anywhere with impulse in A2....hurray for suspension of disbelief). Transwarp also ignores all map objects, just like any wormhole :)

That is realistic though, isn't it? At warp, you are still solid matter, and you couldn't warp through an asteroid field. :lol2:

I think he is actually talking about the other type of transwarp. the non wormhole one.:) but you are right and you can still have a delay before it is fired.;)

That's, however, not how the Ordnance works - it jumps to the location, no matter what lies in the way.

All good ideas. Problem with transwarp is that the range is unlimited. Ideally I want to make it impractical for shuttles to travel far from a star base/shipyard, to force other ships to come to them. Unfortunately I suspect that it won't be possible with regular A2, even with the patch project.
Thanks for the help though guys

If you use the transwarp which I believe the probe uses in stock, it is different. We are not refering to the wormhole type transwarp from the super weapon, but the single ship jump kind. You can make it so you target an area, and it will delay for # amount of time, and then your ship will appear in that targeted place.:)

Sounds like the way to do it, but can you limit the range for it?
I don't want the shuttles to be able to get very far on their own ( unless its type 9, runabout or delta class)

Yup, as Zaxxon stated, a range can be set - the range of the Ordnance is set by the Weapon range ODF command.

BSGHRM v1.0's Jump Drive Special Weapon does exactly what you're looking for. Should be a able to take the ODFs and plug in the numbers you want to get the results you want. Based it on the Borg Interceptor's Transwarp drive. I changed out the sprite and a few other things. From reading this thread, it looks like it does exactly what you want. As to whether or not it would work with FO, I've no idea. But ADM_Z or Dominus should be able to tell you this.
