• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

We have a policy of fairness and a non harassment environment, with the staff quick to act on the rare occasion of when this policy is breached. Feel free to register and join our community.

Not sure if it is permitted to post a link from this site, but I found this on the BBC Home page and thought everyone here might be interested. Place the line below into your web browser and make sure you watch the included video.

Interesting. The Navy also tested a railgun a few years ago and the IDF uses a laser system to intercept Katjusha-rockets and grenades in mid-flight.

Maybe such scifi-esque systems will be in place aboard ships in a few decades.

Yeah, I remember the rail gun. I believe it could hit a three meter diameter target at five miles (about seven or eight kilometers I think) and still have enough force at that range to destroy whatever it hit; quite impressive for a ballistic weapon. Probably an excellent tank killer. Last I heard, the navy was designing a new cruiser or destroyer specifically to mount rail guns, but that was quite a while ago.

Anyway, back to the laser. Something like this could be good at dissabling vessels, but I think it would be better against infantry or possibly tanks than most ships, and subs could easily avoid it by staying underwater. Either way, it's probably not going to be a main weapon for quite some time like the rail gun could be.

How long do you guys think until some branch of the military starts testing a Shadow Cat or Atlas?
