"Sci Fi gives 'Wizard of Oz' drama revamp
Wednesday, November 22 2006, 10:57 UTC - by James Welsh

Sci Fi Channel in America has unveiled plans to remake The Wizard of Oz into an edgy science fiction drama titled Tin Man.

Variety reports that the channel will spend close to $20m to make a six-hour miniseries scheduled to air next December.

"Our goal is to take Wizard of Oz to the next level and make it relevant, modern and fresh to a new generation," Sci Fi's general manager Dave Howe told the trade magazine.

In the revamped version, Dorothy will be a young woman called "DG" and will be hurled into a mysterious "Outer Zone" where she will meet other "reimagined" characters from the original."

"McDonough Is The Tin Man

Neal McDonough (Flags of Our Fathers), Kathleen Robertson (Hollywoodland) and Raoul Trujillo (Apocalypto) round out the cast of SCI FI Channel's upcoming tentatively titled miniseries Tin Man, a reimagining of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. They join a cast led by Zooey Deschanel, Alan Cumming and Richard Dreyfuss in the miniseries, which is slated to begin production in Vancouver, Canada, later this month, with an eye toward a December premiere. The announcement came at SCI FI's upfront press event in New York on March 21.

A sometimes psychedelic, often twisted and always outrageous take on the book, Tin Man is the epic tale of DG (Deschanel), a young woman plucked from her humdrum life and thrust into the Outer Zone (the O.Z.), a fantastical realm filled with wonder but oppressed by dark magic. DG seeks her true identity, battles evil winged monkey-bats and attempts to fulfill her destiny.

Her perilous journey begins on the fabled Old Road, which leads to a wizard known as the Mystic Man (Dreyfuss). Along the way, she is joined by a strange trio of companions: Glitch (Cumming), an odd man missing half his brain; Raw (Trujillo), a quietly powerful wolverine-like creature longing for inner courage; and Cain (McDonough), a heroic former policeman (known as a Tin Man for his tin badge), who seeks vengeance for his scarred heart. Ultimately, DG's destiny leads her to an emotional and terrifying showdown with the wicked sorceress Azkadellia (Robertson), whose ties to DG are closer than anyone could have imagined.

Tin Man will be executive-produced by Robert Halmi Sr. and Robert Halmi Jr. Co-writers Steven Long Mitchell and Craig Van Sickle also serve as executive producers. Nick Willing (Jason and the Argonauts) directs."

Saw all three episodes of Tin Man last night.

Very enjoyable. Worth the wait.

Despite having read that it was a revamp of The Wizard of Oz, this felt more like a sequel to it set generations later.

Very dark but also very good.

I have to agree. Tin-Man was not a remake. It had a different concept and plot.

I loved the entire revamp. Talk about wow on plot, concept and production as one. The cast did a fantastic job. Wish there was more!
