• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

We have a policy of fairness and a non harassment environment, with the staff quick to act on the rare occasion of when this policy is breached. Feel free to register and join our community.

A question about the Seraphim. What's her armament generally supposed to be?

I just felt like I didn't see as many weapons as I would expect for a starship of that size. Felt like there should be a different type of phaser array or something to that effect...

Just my .02

Well I count ten phaser arrays on the bottom of the saucer, plus another ten on top, plus another eight on the pod. Plus several squadrons of fighters of numerous types, so... lots.

Ah. Methinks I need to pay much better attention then. Much obliged! :)

I just learned that Richard Biggs was almost completely deaf since at least the age of thirteen. You'd never guess from watching his scenes in B5.

Wow. Yeah, I didn't know this either. Much respect to him as an actor, I wish he was still around.

So this is pretty darn exciting. NASA published a paper today describing their results on the EM Drive, an inertial propulsion engine proposed way back in 1999. It's been the subject of much debate and a lot of people claimed that it couldn't work. The NASA just showed that, apparently, it does.

The problem is that it's not supposed to work. According to our current understanding of physics, this thing can never ever work, due to Newton's Third Law of Motion. But it does. And it could revolutionize both manned and unmanned space exploration. You see, the EM Drive doesn't need fuel. All it needs is electricity. It doesn't actually emit any kind of matter, like conventional propulsion. How does that even work? No one knows.

So yeah, I'm equally excited about the possible applications for this thing and the sheer fact that NASA apparently just broke one of the laws of physics.

Yeah, according to our knowledge of physics at the time, helicopters aren't suppose to fly either. ;)

That's a fair bit of good news in this dreary time of year.

We've known how helis work since long before we could make them. Leonardo da Vinci even designed an early prototype. Once we figured out that air had substance, it was just a clever application of Newton's laws, no different than the airplane propellers in use at the time.

This completely violates all current understanding of the laws of physics. There is no reaction for this to be the equal and opposite thereof. It seems to be converting energy directly into thrust without pushing against anything. According to the paper, they think it may be utilizing a quantum effect that not everyone can even agree exists. We may be looking at the first technology that we can create and utilize without having any clue how it works. Optimization will probably help with out understanding, but right now, anyone's guess is as good as any.

Remember when I sliced my finger really deep and clipped a nerve? I still have a scar, but I have almost complete sensation! Given how long it's been, I don't think the last bit is coming back, though.

A while back ago I began having issues with my mouse. It would skip around the screen and sometimes it would stop responding altogether. The only way to get it working again would be to unplug it and plug it back in. Even making certain the drivers were up to date didn't fix the issue. Then it started giving me the "Windows does not recognize the USB device" warning. Finally got fed up and replaced it today. I picked up at Logitech G300s from Best Buy for $20. So far I am happy with it. I will give it a good workout later in Neverwinter.

Anyone know where a decent version of DM Phoenix's Allegiance class can be found? I've been looking, but I've had no luck.

I recently saw this quote and thought it was quite relevant considering recent events.

"When and if fascism comes to America it will not be labeled "made in Germany"; it will not be marked with a swastika; it will not even be called fascism; it will be called, of course, "Americanism."

The high-sounding phrase "the American way" will be used by interested groups intent on profit, to cover a multitude of sins against the American and Christian tradition, such sins as lawless violence, teargas and shotguns, denial of civil liberties.

There is an obligation resting on us all to dedicate our minds to the hard task of thinking in terms of Christian objectives and values, so that we may be saved from moral confusion. For never, probably, has there been a time when there was a more vigorous effort to surround social and international questions with such a fog of distortion and prejudices and hysterical appeal to fear.

We have touched a new low in a Congressional investigation this Summer, used by some participating in it to whip up fear and prejudice against many causes of human welfare, such as concern for peace and the rights of labor to bargain collectively."

(Halford E. Luccock, 1938)

So, I asked this over on Reddit and got downvoted a lot because... reasons? Didn't get much in the way of a clear answer, either. Have we ever seen the All Terrain Armored Transport, better known as the AT-AT, actually transport anything? I can only recall it ever being used as a heavy assault platform.

No, it was never seen on screen anything being transported in the AT-AT. One could assume the in the Battle of Hoth, the ATAT were all loaded with troops, but there was never anything seen or even implied on screen. I like what is seen in Rogue One were you can truly get he idea that it is a transport as much as an assault vehicle. They remind me as the amphibious landing crafts used in WW2.

In this picture (taken from a trailer so no spoilers needed), the ATAT that is being shot by the RPG has a brown section. The ATAT that is to the left has an opening in the same location. This shows changeable containers.

Saw Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It was pretty good and would recommend. Still think no-maj sounds ridiculous.

So a friend of mine has a model of the USS Defiant whose nose thingy can tilt a little up and down (it's designed to do so, not a defect of the model) and he claims its because this happens in the show. Does anyone know if this is the case?

That would be really difficult to prove or disprove since there were differences between the physical model, the original CGI models, and the revised CGI models. For instance, I think the deflector is too fat on one of the CGI models. And they kept switching between the three all the time due to stock footage. I think the nose is supposed to be detachable, though. I'm really interested if anybody knows for sure.
