• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

I was startled when the Odyssey came out the way it did. From the first sketch I actually envisaged in my minds eye something more akin to a Galaxy layout (with a double neck) - which probably would have worked better as the dual neck adds width to what otherwise should be a sleek design.

Oh yeah, I definitely agree. I personally like the Sketch Odyssey much more than the STO Odyssey.

Hi Terra_inc,

I'm curious how the Sketch Odyssey looks. Where can I find it?

I managed to find an image. Just one view and some other ships for scale, though.

Looks like the sketch has a third neck and the side necks are attached to the edge of the saucer instead of the underside.

I must admit the Odyssey is one of my least desired STO designs and I always thought they really messed too much with the design, where the original sketch was a better design all round IMO.

The Odyssey isn't spectacular, but I wouldn't say it's anywhere near the worst design. Now, the Envoy, that's hideous.

Funny enough I find they do more horrid Fed designs than anything else. :lol2:

If we pool our credits, we can probably get one to blow up.

stunning work there Jet... love the Arrow class, been a long stnding favourite. too bad STO dont ask for more fan designs, as there are designs, like the Arrow and Gryphon and dozens of KDF/Rom ships, which are far superior to things they've actually put in the game!

They did that it was called design the next enterprise contest.. which was a fares given that they went with one of their own designers I should know I was in the top 10 in that contest and number two in the pubic votes. but I digress

Back to topic: In other words the masterful art work of young master Jetfreak

I split these off of Jet's thread.

Anyway, the Enterprise contest was ruined by CBS. Cryptic wanted to do it properly but CBS first restricted it to US residents then vetoed the winning design anyway. Then they had it modified on top of that. CBS has pretty consistently mishandled Trek since they got it.

That wasn't all of it. It also had to do with international tax laws regarding winnings. I don't know the exact specifics. As to the ship itself, I personally don't think it is a horrible design. Not the best but certainly not the worst either. If really look back, all Enterprises in Trek history followed a design lineage. The lone exception being the NX (which would have ended up the same had they renewed the series). Same basic shape that just gets sleeker as time went on. I think the Odyssey followed this fairly well. I would have loved to have seen a few of our members' designs in the game, particularly the Seraphim and Armistice classes. Both would have served well for the timeline.

I agree with SciFiFan, the Odyssey isn't really the worst from the STO line up. Personally, the real problem with their Fed ships are their over designed appearance and their copy paste texturing. It leads to overly generic looking mish-mesh designs with no real "character" so to speak.

Decent looking Starfleet ships are actually hard to make as Trek has a lot of unwritten rules for ship design. Little details on nacelle colors, saucer/stardrive proportions, registry markings or deflector designs are just few aspects to take into account and properly execute. Its a bit like automotive design as well. The best Trek ships usually have a balance of aesthetics and functionality, not to mention an eye for continuity.

If I remember correctly, some of those rules are that nacelles have to be placed in pairs (though they were somewhat flexible with this), they needed to be unobstructed from the front so the bussard collectors could work, and the nacelle pairs needed to have at least 50% line of sight with each other. STO is good about having them in pairs, but they tend to violate the second and third rules.
