(Again, the whole galaxy to play with and they think we need to add time travel into the mix)

Because they do not have an original Idea in their heads for the life of them

I'm more interested in the end of the promo video at the end where we see the TOS Enterprise and a Date of May 5.

Giveaways for First Contact Day, first up, Borg DOFF
http://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star-trek-online/news/detail/9892173

First Contact Day, the day Humans and Vulcans made contact due to Zefram Cochrane’s first warp flight, is a day which is incredibly important to the formation of the Federation. To celebrate this important date, Star Trek Online will be giving out some great rewards. From 3/31/16 to 4/6/16 every 48 hours, we’ll be giving out a different item, so be sure to grab these up!

To claim the Duty Officer – Borg Warfare Specialist (+5% All Damage - Ground):

1. Log into the game on a character between 9AM Pacific on Thursday March 31 and 10AM Pacific on Saturday April 2.
2. Visit the in-game C-Store via the button on the minimap.
3. Navigate to the ‘Promotions’ tab.
4. Scroll down and click on the ‘Neal Falconer Duty Officer’ item.
5. Click the “Claim” button towards the bottom-right of the interface.

*Note: A reclaim version of this item will appear once claimed. This is only meant for future characters made on this account. Only one version of this item can be used at a time by a player.

EDIT - just to clarify, this is one per character, not one per account.

That was a good one. I still liked last year though were they said they were rolling the game back to the way it was at launch. Then they actually opened up a server with that build for a short time.

If I recall they didn't do one last year, I also suspect they're holding off as its a big anniversary this year. It's a shame really, I was half hoping for a chance to try out one of the new Odyssey class.

Today Cryptic announced their next expansion for Star Trek Online. Agents of Yesterday is a full expansion that allows players to create a new character in the TOS era. We will have TOS uniforms, ships, and Walter Koenig will be reprising his role as Chekov and Chris Doohan will be taking over the role of Scotty that was originally portrayed by his dad, the late James Doohan. This expansion is in celebration of Star Treks 50th anniversary. They are also offering two separate packs to go with the expansion. These packs give you ships and uniforms. They will be releasing more blogs with more details.

I was afraid of something like this. I can imagine only a few ways this game could get worse but there aren't many anymore.

What makes you say that?

This TOS expansion strikes me as little more than an attempt to appeal to the TOS/JJ fanboys (largely the latter) who want to see content more along the lines of Kirk blowing up Klingons rather than Picard exploring new worlds and keeping the peace. Granted, it's a good move business-wise, considering most of the players fall into the first category, but as someone who belongs to the latter, it's frustrating to see a game with the name Star Trek on it to continue to move away from the things which made Star Trek great and continue to move toward another copy-and-paste action game.

For me as a TOS/TMP fan this sounds great but i think the "new" ships are only for Federation and the other races will get recycled NX-era and uninspired kitbash ships.

T6 Temporal Multi-Mission Science Vessel Eternal Class

While equipped with cutting-edge scientific technology, the Eternal-class was designed to fulfill a number of roles in the field. Built to operate alone on the frontier or as part of a fleet, the Eternal is a versatile part of 31st century Starfleet.

T6 Temporal Raider Ouroboros Class

This raider from the future puts fear into the hearts of her enemies. An Ouroboros brings potent weaponry and tactical systems to the fight in whatever era she’s deployed in, making the raider a valuable asset in the Temporal Cold War.

It has been said that these two ships are cross faction. To me, the Ouroboros even has a Romulan/Reman feel to it. Yes, this expansion is geared more to the Feds. Be as that may, even TOS itself was Fed centric. The Klingons and Romulans were just baddies with no real purpose other than to give Kirk and the Enterprise an antagonist. Personally, I am intrigued with it and will pass judgement when it is released and I have a chance to play it. Also, I don't understand where the JJ reference comes from. Paramount owns that, not CBS. CBS could possibly care less about the new movies or anything that comes with them. It is indeed geared to the TOS fans because, that is what started it all and they are doing this for the 50's anniversary.

The JJ reference was about the NuTrek fans who comprise a great deal of the player base in STO, who are fans of the kind of Star Trek seen in the new movies and a good deal of TOS instead of the more thought-provoking kind of Star Trek seen in TNG, DS9, and Voyager. Even if CBS can't use the ships/aliens/characters/etc from the JJ movies, said movies have still had a major impact on the fan base, and this can be seen in how STO has developed for the past couple years.

While it's the 50th anniversary of TOS, Star Trek simply couldn't have remained the phenomenon it is today without the spin-offs and the direction they went in. I've seen many other Star Trek related media celebrate the entirety of the Star Trek franchise on anniversary dates, as they acknowledge and, more importantly, respect the role and influence the spin-offs had. To see this becoming less and less the case in STO is disheartening, to say the least.

I do agree about the spin-offs. However, TOS gained a renewed following in syndication after it was cancelled which ultimately led to a revival of the series but instead became the first movie, The Motion Picture. The rest as they say is history.

My exact issue as well it's also a reason I don't play the game much anymore. TBH I'd be surprised if the other races get anything and are even playable.

i'm certainly intrigued by it. wont be buying the packs though. I like the Eternal and Ouroboros classes, but not enough to get them. The only one that actually appeals is the Ranger class. But despite it being yet another cashcow for them, I'm intrigued. Looking forward to seeing how it pans out.
