Basically the original director of the 1994 Stargate movie is pitching to MGM to make a new trilogy based off the 1994 movie and essentially reboot the franchise wiping out the TV series SG1, Atlantis and Universe.

We have a few Stargate fans here, what is your opinion on this?

If it can be like what was done with the Abramsverse, just an alternate reality, then I'm okay with it.

I'm still waiting for the Atlantis movie...going to be a long wait.

I am personally not interested much if it's a reboot. So getting sick of them to be honest. Some are done well like BSG, Spider-man etc, however there is no need to reboot Stargate or Men in Black.

I'd rather see a movie set after the series, even if it's all new characters etc. Hell it even could be set on a alien civilization that is near Earth like and like Earth back in 1997 are setting out for the first time into the galaxy. A reboot here is simply not needed. Apparently the director does like the Stargate series and wants to wipe it clean.

They're doing a Men in Black reboot?! Why?!

But I agree, Hollywood's reboot quick is growing somewhat tiresome, even if some of them are enjoyable.

As for a Stargate reboot, I dimly recall that there were a few books written as sequels to the movie. They weren't that good... SG-1 was superior.

Apparently Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are too expensive to make profit off MIB4, which I can understand, but there is still on need to reboot it. Independence Day 2, which apparently won't have Will Smith either isn't being rebooted.

Reboots while enjoyable are getting out of hand. You don't see Lucas and Disney rebooting Star Wars.

It seems in today's climate that movie and series producers are so unwilling to continue something or finish what they started. I find it a little disgusting that they will spend millions on something and then turn around and abandon it years later wishing to reboot it. While reboots are nothing new in movie and television. The sheer amount of them are becoming alarming, it's like so few wish to do something new.

While I could understand Spiderman being rebooted (actor walked away and movie company screwed up everything in Spiderman 3) and Battlestar Galactica as it was a 70's TV show and many of the original actors have passed. There is simply no need for Stargate to be rebooted in my opinion.

I thoroughly enjoyed SG-1 and Atlantis and Universe was finally getting good when it got the axe. I would be sorely disappointed if all of that is just thrown away.

thats like it is in all aspects of todays life, if you are impatient you only get low quality, if you want more and more in shorter time you get low quality, good quality needs its time, even inspiration for something needs its time

i would be disappointed to, if this happens, they should go on with Universe

I blame it on lack of imagination, people not willing to come up with new and original ideas. Just rehashing old concepts and trying to make them fit with modern times and techniques.

Well the thing is, Stargate is one of those series that doesn't need a reboot. I know both Atlantis and Universe were left at cliffhangers but they didn't mess anything up. A continuation there in movie format or an entirely new crew, base/ship, situation would also work for Stargate. It's a waste to reboot such a successful series. I'm half tempted to email MGM like I did when SG1 was cancelled (suggesting direct to DvD movies which they did) and recommend such an idea.

I think there was a direct DVD planned for Atlantis, but the recession kind of killed it.

There were I think two Atlantis movies planned and another couple SG1 movies planned before they all got axed.

A crying shame that. Although, with SG-1 at least, I have to admit to a bit of disenchantment towards the end. I wasn't the biggest fan of the Ori storyline. I still enjoyed the show, just not as much as I had in previous seasons.

I was the opposite, by season 8 I felt the Gouald were over done and with O'Neill as base commander I found the season had very little progression as a whole. It had some nice stories but really it didn't progress the overall SG universe much other than to tie in Atlantis and get rid of the Replicators and Anubis.

Season 9 to me was a fresh start with one of my favourite sci-fi actors who took on the lead role as Colonel Mitchell. The Ori while not a totally new concept with the crusades was a nice change and something different to watch.

I'm with Zelph on that one, the Ori storyline seemed very tacked on and was then rushed. They should have just ended on a high note (the team at a cabin fishing, how else could the series have been properly ended?). It's another example of trying to make money off of a successful franchise and losing the plot by stretching too far (Lost and BSG are two other examples that spring to mind). But I guess that brings me to agreeing with Maj's point - if it's successful why does it need a reboot??? There's a huge fan base, there's stories still to write (lets face it, the Atlantis finale was a bit of a cop out), and it seems there may be money to make rebooted movies... so why not use it on the successful franchise?

As I said, poor imaginations on behalf of some people. Finish your story and then let it be, don't stop before the end and reboot it!

Although I didn't completely like the storyline, I did enjoy Mitchell, Vala, and Landry being added as characters. They definitely added to the series.

I think another issue with the Ori arc was they were only given two seasons, about half way through the last season they found out the series wasn't going to continue. So like a lot of series decided to have a little fun, even if it didn't make a whole lot of sense. The SG1 movies were really good.

To be honest I think that the Sci-Fi Channel just wanted to get into the record books for the longest running American sci-fi series as soon as season 10 started they I think already made up their mind to axe the series.

What really annoyed me is that they go rid of Farscape on the grounds of needing to see a previous episode to know what on Earth was going on and as soon as they axed that series, Stargate started the same thing. To me it was an excuse to get rid of a series and then they did the same to SG1, Atlantis and Universe.

I totally agree with everything you said here.
Would have been nice to see more on Universe than we got to see, it felt only half complete.

Season 2 of Universe really picked up to a point I didn't want to get to the end. It was left at a huge cliff-hanger unlike the other Stargate series.

I enjoyed Universe (well, mostly. Really why oh why did they create a series, send a bunch of people halfway across the universe and then focus on life on Earth?). Yes the second series was great, and I actually though the finale was a great one and was actually the best of the three Stargate series.

Ooh... this could be good! Definitely keeping an eye on the reboot... hope they keep it in the spirit of the originals though
