I had some issues with it, but the internals were perfect, the proposed Season 5 refit was fantastic and the stated reasons for the refit actually made the design lineage make sense.

I just finished watching Enterprise this weekend for the very first time. I admit that back when it was first announced, I didn't like the NX-01's design but I find that I've grown to like it more as I watched the series.

As to the Discovery, or whatever the ship's final name is, I'll withhold judgment until I see what final design they choose. But as it stands, I don't like the current design at all. Reminds me of one of those crazy kitbashes you might find in Armada Fleet Command.

I will also voice my disgust for the ship design. While I always appreciate McQuarrie inspiration, I don't think this one needed such literal translation... Not a fan at all. I do hope redesigns are considered.

I'm wondering what kind of design would you guys like to see?

Do you guys want the standard dish connected to a secondary hull with nacelles, ala Constitution, Galaxy, Sovereign, etc.

Or would you like to see a more unorthodox design such as the Miranda, NX-01, Kelvin?

I'm not sure. While I'm a traditionalist in loving the general design the Enterprise is usually given, I like to see variety in their designs. And since this ship isn't an Enterprise, I'm more flexible.

I also would love to see ship classes have more of a purpose than just having different designs purely for aesthetic diversity: Cruisers, Destroyers, etc.

Daedalus class would be nice and a nod to Matt Jefferies

I'll definitely say that a Daedalus would be a very unique ship from what we've seen before. And any homage to Jeffries is good by me.

I concur with a Daedalus. I also would not object to an official TOS Miranda.

Personally I don’t understand why CBS has chosen for Discovery to play in a period in time long before TNG and even before TOS. The series Enterprise didn’t last as long as TNG and the other spin-offs. What makes them so sure that Discovery will be a success?
For example, why not let the events involving the ship take place in the time just after the Dominion War?

Speaking of the design of the ship: again, personally I think it looks completely wrong, compared to the Constitution class. The design shows, just like the aforementioned Enterprise, elements that are to modern looking.

Do you believe that the setting was what caused Enterprise to not be as successful as the other series? I'm not sure if I agree but I am an anomaly. I tend to like the Archer and Kirk eras so much more than Picard and his contemporaries.

I definitely agree that the period chosen for Discovery is an odd one. Especially since it is set in the Prime universe, the goal should be to make everything look as faithful as possible to TOS. That means everything from the clothing to the tech, need to match up. Even the fact that other ships and Stations didn't use the Arrowhead Starfleet insignia on their uniforms (That was for the Enterprise crew alone back in TOS). Also no women Captains, which I know they will not follow through with. And everything will just look "wrong" when compared to TOS.

This said, I would much rather see the series take place during TMP era. I enjoyed TNG, DS9 and VOY alright, but I honestly find the setting, crews, characters and technology much more appealing in the ENT-TMP timeline. Just make this at some point between WOTK and UC, make the ship an the Discovery an Excelsior class, NCC-2001, and call it a day.

I will reswrve my judgements on this 'till more has been shown. :) Hopefully it will be available elsewhere than just CBS, even if it might take a while, as I don't have access to that channel.

Hi Borg_Queen, if you live outside the US, the show will be broadcast through Netflix I think but only international. In CBS access it said it would "originally" air on the subscription service so that may mean that eventually it will run on the network. And if not, there's always Blu ray! :D

If you guys missed any of this, some details on the new show:

Excuse me if that's been reported already.

The reason I like both the ENT and TMP era ships is they look sturdier than the more streamlined ships in the future series. It makes those ships look a little more practical than the futuristic luxury liners we had in TNG.

The problem I have with the Deadalus idea is Deadalus would likely be too early a design for the time period of this show. I'm fairly certain Daedalus was supposed to be a late 22nd/early 23rd century design, based on the registry numbers used for a few of them.

Enterprise didn't work in the first three seasons because the writers tried to introduce too many species/concepts/events that weren't present in future series. What would have been better was exploring how future elements of Star Trek's plot came to be and how early humans dealt with such things (the transporter and the Andorians were good examples of this, while the Vulcans didn't work well at all).

Personally I think many Star Trek writers these days don't seem to realize that you can't make a ship/station/other tech more advanced in a prequel than the events it's set before. Using a design that was meant to be post-TOS as a pre-TOS design indicates a complete lack of thought on the writers side, be it from incompetence or arrogance, and makes me very pessimistic about the series itself.

    I agree with you dvatreknerd314.

Up until First Contact, where we see the Akira and the Sovereign for the first time, the only real TNG era ship that seemed like a "Starfleet" ship was DS9's Defiant. And that also had to do with their choice to put pulse phasers into it which I've always found superior to the static beam arc used in the series set in that era.

I've always found the TNG ships too civilian-like and comfy. The same way that I found Starfleet from the 24th century too watered down as compared to TMP's military Starfleet (TMP's uniforms are still the best and I love that the new films have multiple types of uniforms and even saucer hats).

It looks like the error that they made with making Enterprise look newer than the earlier series is again being done with Discovery. Bryan Fuller stated that all of the designs would be revamped to reflect the current technology available today. I mean even the ship itself looks wrong, look at the nacelles; where are the buzzards which were trademark TOS and pre-TOS timeline?

Also I've heard he wants Angela Bassett to play the Captain. Well not if he's staying true to canon and TOS in the Prime Universe. "Turnabout Intruder" from TOS clearly stated that Starfleet didn't give starship commands to women in that period, so it's impossible they would do so 10 years before that.

And on a final note, Fuller mentioned that the first season will see the war mentioned in "Whom Gods Destroy". That of course means that they are referring to the 4 Years War and the infamous Battle of Axanar. So now it makes sense why Paramount went all draconian on the fan film. They likely saw Prelude on YouTube and decided to put Discovery on that era and make their own "official" version of the events and don't want a second version of the story, even a fan made one, to compete.

To be fair to the Enterprise writers and original showrunners (despite all the issues I have with them), the idea to use an Akira for the Enterprise was from the network who wanted to save money. The people actually involved with the show were horrified at the idea and did their best to make the NX class distinct.

ENT had a woman as the captain of the Columbia, so they either retconned that already or Earth Starfleet operated under different rules. I personally lean toward the 'retcon' side and the idea that Lester was just insane.

LOL! This is true, I doubt that Starfleet thought Hernandez was so terrible that they decided "No more women Captains!".

I do believe you're right though Cabal, it's likely a retcon. Unfortunately that sort of makes Lester's entire point of wanting to swap bodies with Kirk even more pointless. Her whole revenge thing was flimsy at best, but at least greed for something she couldn't otherwise get made it more palpable (A little) that she did the body swap in terms of plotting.

And I'm sure quite a few people want to pretend Enterprise did not take place in the Prime Universe anyway. I'm sure I've seen other contradictions and retcons in Enterprise. If they do that as well with Discovery it will only serve to further distance itself from TOS canon. I thought the point was to do the opposite now. But hey, they're bringing back Winona Ryder as Amanda, so that should go over so well with the folks that hate the JJ-verse. :D

Bryan Fuller has left the project. His role as executive producer is being fille by Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts. Additionally, Akiva Goldsman as joined in an undefined "top creative role."

Sonequa Martin-Green has been cast as the lead on DSC, which probably doesn't bode well for her Walking Dead character. Additionally, Michelle Yeoh has been cast as the captain of the Shenzhou. Finally, Chris Obi, Shazad Latif, and Mary Chieffo have been cast as a trio of Klingons. Chris Obi and Shazad Latif will be playing T'Kuvma and Kol, respectively, who are trying to unite the Great Houses. Mary Chieffo will play L'Rell, who commands a Klingon ship.

A revised logo has been posted to Twitter. Just a screenshot since I can't seem to save it directly, even when viewing the page source.

Additionally, there's a teaser of the new uniform, which seems to combine TOS and ENT elements. Full article with some other teaser bits here.

The trailer shown design is a modernized version of the proposed redesign of the Enterprise for the cancelled Star Trek movie Planet of the Titans, which should have been the original motion picture movie. If this is set ten years before TOS than this design would be so wrong, unless they would show a prototype test flight series. The correct choise for a ship in this timeframe would be an early Constitution Vessel or Baton Rouge derived ship, like the Ranger or Anton class survey or multimission cruisers.

I vote for a Baton Rouge or Lancaster class Terradyne is right the design shown does not work for early TOS.

The thing abut those designs is that they date back to the old Spaceflight Chronology, so you would have to credit and compensate the writers and illustrators of that book. There are legal and financial reasons you probably want to avoid doing that. Plus I sure the powers behind this show have their own vision of the post-Enterprise/ pre-The Original Series era, they're not going to fill it with other people's work.

I'm always a bit iffy about having Trek alumni play ancestors of their characters. It was kinda novel with WorF in STVI, but it got silly with Brent Spiner playing Soong's grandad. Then there was Janeway and T'pol assuming the roles of their ancestors when recounting stories about them.
