1. Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

We have a policy of fairness and a non harassment environment, with the staff quick to act on the rare occasion of when this policy is breached. Feel free to register and join our community.

Hey. I have a question. I know about z-depth rendering. But I have Problems to render fine looking Torpedos and Phasers. Torpedos I rendered with LensFlares and Glow Effects, but I can't create Phaser.
In the past I create cylinders with mental ray glow, but this looking Dren.
Have anyone a fine way to create phaserbeams?

Waaaaay back when, I used to try and do energy beams by having a high luminescent tube inside of a colored semi-transparent tube, and also shining a light down the tube. I had mixed results.
These days I will do two renders, one with placeholder "beams" and one without. I use the placeholders to get positioning and perspective right and then create the beams in photoshop over the render without the placeholder.

We create line that is always turned to the player in one dimension (to let him see the beam always from the face side), but in others it can be in any angle to him (to let the beam be set in any coordinates). Hmm... A bit strange explanation, sorry)). So we just add texture to this line.

What soft are you using to code? Or what is the programming language?

Hey, I'm not using a coding programm, it's only a question of 3dsmax skills.
    But thanks for the tips.

You'd think Starfleet would learn to clean their cameras once in a while

Mh, I don't use any dirt or other Filters. Only, I aranged the Models and for the Light Ambient I use a Skylight and a Omni-Light with outer glow and Shadows on.
:) Is your screen dirty :)

I think it was a reference to the lens flare, which is waaaaay to much. It's nigh on impossible to see what's going on in the image, the Cube is hard to make out and the only reason I can see the starship under it is because of the blue lighting on the nacelle. I'm sure the models are great, you just can't actually see most of them.

As far as I remember there is a similar option in 3Ds Max arsenal. Try to create a line and add beam textures to it.
