I've been following this production for quite sometime, probably a year or more now.

Today I found out some more news that is worth reading posting about, especially when I realized there was no thread about it here.

First off it's set about 20 years before the TOS, at the Battle of Axanar between the Federation and Klingon Empire. They are currently in an arms race to see who can get their new cruisers launched (D7 for the Empire, Conny for the Federation). It's got some big names in it too, Michael Hogan (Colonel Tigh from BSG) Richard Hatch (No need to say who he is), Gary Graham (Soval from ENT and reprises his character for this) and J.G Hertzler (Martok from DS9 among others roles in DS9 and Voyager etc).

They are also doing a kickstarter to do a small production documentary that is separate from the movie. They met their $15,000 goal in 14 hours. Check out the video:

the idea for this is good but if they use those ships they show in the the video, than this will be verry disappointing. The ship designs are not fitting into the timeframe this is supposed to be set in, the federation ships look like those in the JJ-shxx Trek and the Klingon one looks like a facelifted D-4 from Enterprise. There is a whole site named Star Fleet Museum with more better fitting designs, why didn't these guys just used the designs from there!?
this seems to me like they only want to show eyecandy ships and nothing really in the continuity of Star Trek as such.

I could not disagree with you more, because I'm not a fan of the Star Fleet Museum. Nothing personal but each to there own.

I'll be looking forward to see this fan film.

To me, the ships look like they're trying to show some sort of progression from ENT to TOS, so I at least give them points for trying. Honestly, so long as they can make the Connie look like an advanced starship rather than a cheap '60s prop I'll be fine. Too many people try to perfectly recreate the Connie's original studio model even though the lack of detail was mostly due to the virtually non-existent budget. Just look at all the detail added with the refit in TMP. That's not because it's a refit, that's because they had more than eight dollars to make the thing with.

... Anyway, the movie itself looks interesting and they've got some great people so I'll be waiting to see more.

I agree, while some designs from SFM I like such as the Asia, I like the ships they are using in this new film. They are showing a Starfleet that is only like 80 years old who are still building their fleet up in face of an impending threat aka the Klingon Empire. The Empire I like how they are using the D6, not quite a D7 but is on the way/direction to being one thus showing a lineage of the D series of vessels. The D5 is still out of place but it is in keeping with the Empire and their excessive use of a hull way beyond it's service life and hull expectancy.

With the big names, and Tobis working on the CGI it's going to be an amazing film and one that will be every bit as good as other movies we have seen.

I'm really stoked about Axanar, I've been helping spreading the word for the Kickstarter on social media etc as I can. They've been able to gather a lot of funds together, much more than they expected I think. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with it.

I agree I think it will set a new benchmark for fan made and funded productions.

Here is another one I am interested in, set after Enterprise and it deals with the Earth-Romulan war.

Horizon looks really good too. Seeing these little snippets makes it almost more painful to have to wait for what they could become. :)

I agree, the scenes in that teaser look awesome. the quality is amazing for a fan film. So many good fan productions coming out these days, Anaxar, Horizon, Phase 2 and Star Trek Renegades who needs a CBS series that will get cancelled when it gets good?

Horizons looks fantastic, I'm excited to see a production work within the Romulan War. I know that some of the Enterprise books did (Under the Raptor's Wing etc.), but they just didn't tickle my fancy as much as I would've liked.

In other news, Axanar just broke the $90,000 mark on Kickstarter. They've had some pretty sweet publicity over the last few days too, even an article in space.com: http://www.space.com/25264-star-trek-axanar-fan-film-kickstarter.html.

Tis pretty awesome. I really like the design they have for Garth's ship, the U.S.S. Ares. I'm looking forward to seeing it in action.

I'd say congratulations to them I really think Axanar is going to be something special can't wait to see Richard Hatch as a Klingon.

Yeah the Ares is a good design, shame it's designed by a guy that is pretty arrogant. Tried helping him out with STO, as his Luna class is pretty inaccurate raised awareness on the STO forums and even got some responses from the Dev's, he then posted on DA saying he has been contact them by it and they were going to look at working with him to make it more accurate in the future and I mentioned my efforts to help him and he couldn't even admit that I helped in his endeavour.

Lets just say after that I don't go out my way to help him. Found some uniforms on ebay that use his original designs, can't be bothered to tell him due to how unappreciative he is.

Axanar is going to be awesome I love the D6 model they have, sort of a rework of the unused D4 model that never made it into ENT because of stupid producers.

Hello:
About the battle of Axanar, I can see the concerns because many ships have strange designs and/or are too JJ-like in the style of the USS Kelvin.

But I still think I'll give it a try :) .

Personally I see nothing wrong with that, ships being like the JJ Trek background ships. They have been changed a little to work in the era and to be honest the Starfleet Museum isn't canon and no series or movies have covered the era yet, so anything can go. If anyone is going to let they ruin the production for them, I am very sorry for them. I am not a fan of the JJ Enterprise, nor the Uhura/Spock relationship however I did not allow those small issues to stop myself enjoying the movies and I look forward to the next one. The same can be said here with Axanar.

We must also remember that the 1960's Enterprise was a byproduct of it's day of physical modeling which was very expensive (in the 60's, 70's and even the early to mid 80's) and they had a budget so small that I'm surprised they managed to do what they did with it. To be honest with this production, if we do get to see a Constitution I hope they modernise it a bit to be more in line with the Ares for example.

To be honest I think the ships seen in the trailer (other than the Ares) are supposed to represent very old designs, probably dating back to the late 22nd century.

The Enterprise will be making an appearance whilst under construction. Michael Hogan (from BSG fame) will be portraying Captain Robert April. Bout time the Colonel got a ship of his own haha.

I personally would like to see the entire era done like the Gabe Koerner Enterprise in something. Axanar, a mod, I don't care, the ship is too pretty to go unused.

Well he did get the Bucket for a while (after Adama was shot) and didn't want the command. Maybe he has changed his mind. :lol2:

I agree I have always loved that version of the 1701. If I was a mod-a-holic I would so do that.

So I just saw the trailer for Prelude to Axanar - they released a private version to the Kickstarter donors on Facebook - and it blew my socks off. When they release a public version of it here in a few days, I'll be sure to post a link.

...sorry, still geeking out...methinks that with Horizons, Renegades, and Axanar, this is a good year to be a trekkie haha.

I look forward to seeing the public version. Yes so many good fan films, goes to show there is still a market for a prime universe series to run alongside the alternative universe movies by JJ Abrams.

I like it quite well, though I'm not sure what I think of the effects on the Klingon voices.

Thanks for posting this Zelph, for a fan film that is fantastic. I could see this evolving into something even bigger in the future, maybe even something official if Paramount can get the heads out of their ..... :lol2:

We should make Zelph our resident Sci-fi news man. :plan:

I know right? As much as I did enjoy Into Darkness, this feels more like real Trek to me. If Prelude to Axanar is this good, I'm excited to see what the full feature will be like later this year or early next.

You mean that weird modulation on Hatch's voice towards the end of the trailer? Yeah, I noticed that too.

Yeah I really enjoy the JJ Abrams movies but he has said he aimed it at movie fans not particular Trek fans. However he has brought a lot of new fans into the franchise which that in itself is commendable. As I always like to think "Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations" which is what Trek should be. There is nothing wrong with continuing those movies but we also should have a series or something set in the prime universe. There is enough demand to make money off it in my opinion. Something like Axanar or of similar quality would work extremely well for television.

I like it quite well, though I'm not sure what I think of the effects on the Klingon voices.

Well traditionally Klingons were played by African's or African-Americans for their deeper voices and larger stature. Hatch is neither of these but is still a great actor, will always be the Apollo I remember the most fondly.

A shame they couldn't get Michael Dorn in there to play a ancestor to Worf.

Prelude to Axanar releases to the donors tonight! So flippin stoked! :D

Also, they started the Kickstarter - or the first one leastways - for the main feature yesterday. They're doing pretty darn well methinks. They'll need $650,000 for the film itself, but they've set a Kickstarter goal of $100,000 since they don't anticipate raising it all at once. So far though, they've raised over $67,000. Not bad eh?

Oh, here's the link to their new KS, it's got the extended trailer for Prelude in it, which is pretty darn sweet: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/194429923/star-trek-axanar

Thanks for posting this mate, the video on the kickstarter is awesome, they have now also reached over $74,100 at the time of me posting this. Pretty solid work. This I think is truly the future of Trek as we all grew up with. Not that the movies with Chris Pine are bad, but this should keep those fans who complain and whine about it being different happy, as it will with many others.

I haven't had a chance to see this yet, need to find 20 mins of quiet time to watch this. I've been thinking for a while now to include the D6 in Yesteryears, but that is a way off. I'd like to see someone take a crack at the D6 as well.
