• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

    Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

    We have a policy of fairness and a non harassment environment, with the staff quick to act on the rare occasion of when this policy is breached. Feel free to register and join our community.

Shield Sod/Skinnier Shields

I've been thinking about this and wanted to get other thoughts. You know how the shield sod is a circle cut in half, what if it was shaped more like a football cut in half? I realize the shield gets stretched around the ship anyway and looks good, but what if it was more oval or football shape? Would this yield a shield that looks like it's closer to the hull of the ship/station? Thoughts?

Well....I can't model, but if anyone is so inclined? I just started thinking if the model was already shaped less round and more ovoid what would the outcome be? I remembered all the talk years ago about skin tight shields between Elrond and I think Draconis Sharp which never surfaced.

The only way I can think of to do true skin-tight shields as seen on TV would be to code every weapon to animate the target on impact, give every ship and station a duped model with a texture animation just off the hull, and have all the weapons use the ignoreShield flag to bypass the shield bubble, but even that runs into problems with what happens when the shields go down.

That said, I'm not a modeler by any means, but I should be able to whip up an ovoid pretty quick.

Edit: Alright, here's an MS3D file. I honestly can't remember if my hardpoint hierarchy is correct or how to properly apply a texture, so if someone would finish that...

I wish MS3D would open the stock shield file, but it gives an error that it's too old a version or something. Hopefully someone will see and finish it.

Hmm this looks very interesting, i cant really model anything or know anything on the subject but ill be keeping an eye on this.
