Shatner to attend USS Enterprise retirement event

USS-Enterprise-Retirement-Star-Trek-William-Shatner.jpg
Norfolk, VA – The USS Enterprise is retiring soon from the US Navy and Captain Kirk will be beaming aboard for the retirement ceremonies. According to the Associated Press, actor William Shatner of the Star Trek series is scheduled to perform Friday during the USS Enterprise’s inactivation ceremony at Naval Station Norfolk. As previously reported on The Inquisitr, this year the USS Enterprise began its final voyage home before being decommissioned.

Navy spokesman Mike Maus said, “We sort of think he might be coming, but not as an official part of the ceremony.†William Shatner’s representative said the actor would give a short speech at the event.

William Shatner played the fictional star ship captain James Tiberius Kirk who helmed the USS Enterprise in the long-running TV and movie series Star Trek. Flying through space, the fictional USS Enterprise and Captain Kirk’s crew traveled to where no one has gone before. While fictional, the stories of the Star Trek universe would often recall “historic†examples like the real-life USS Enterprise.

The real USS Enterprise was the world’s first nuclear powered aircraft carrier to join the United States Navy fleet. Besides William Shatner, the real-life USS Enterprise has actually hosted another crew member of its fictional Star Trek counterpart.

In 1983, George Takei was aboard the USS Enterprise when it ran aground on a sandbar while returning to Alameda, California from a deployment. George Takei played Lt. Commander Hikaru Sulu in the original Star Trek series.

According to the Naval History & Heritage Command website:

“During the final leg of the inbound channel, however, approximately a half-mile from the pier, USS Enterprise ran aground and was delayed for almost five hours until the incoming tide and tugs could free her.â€

What do you think about the USS Enterprise inactivation ceremony being attended by William Shatner? And, yes, I knew what the “T†stood for off the top of my head.

I think its pretty cool. Would be actually pretty cool if both Bill Shatner and Patrick Stewart would both attend seeing as they commanded 2 USS Enterprises thrroughout StarTreks history. But of course Patrick has been trying to separate himself from StarTrek for quite a long time. So I can understand why he wouldn't be interested.

An interesting fact about the Aircraft Carrier Enterprise.. like her predecessor that fought in World War 2. She engaged in more naval battles and skirmishes than any U.S. Naval vessel over her lifespan of 51 years, which also makes her the oldest vessel in the U.S. Navy..

51 years of service. That is some seriously good piece of hardware. If I was Shatner, I'd go to that ceremony, too.

T is probably for Thadeus. I've never seen anyone who willingly used that name.

It's that or his rating as an actor: Terrible.

You mean the name in Kirk's name? Or I misunderstand something?

The USS Enterprise, which served in every major conflict of the past 51 years, was retired Saturday.

NORFOLK, Va. — The world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier has been retired from active service in the U.S. Navy.

The USS Enterprise ended its notable 51-year career on Saturday during a ceremony at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia.

Thousands of former crew members, ship builders and their families lined a pier to bid farewell to one of the most decorated ships in the Navy.

The ship served in every major conflict since participating in a blockade during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

With the inactivation, the U.S. fleet is temporarily reduced to 10 aircraft carriers while the USS Gerald R. Ford is built. It will join the fleet in 2015.

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus said in a recorded video message during the ceremony that a future aircraft carrier would be named USS Enterprise.

WOot new USS Enterprise !
