Okay, some may rememeber the largest non-nuclear ordnance ever built, the "mother of all bombs" which indeed brought the city of Tampa/Florida to tremble a few years ago.

Well, that was the largest non-nuclear tactical ordnance on the planet - until now. Read on:

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia has tested the world's most powerful vacuum bomb, which unleashes a destructive shockwave with the power of a nuclear blast, the military said on Tuesday, dubbing it the "father of all bombs".

The bomb is the latest in a series of new Russian weapons and policy moves as President Vladimir Putin tries to reassert Moscow's role on the international stage.

"Test results of the new airborne weapon have shown that its efficiency and power is commensurate with a nuclear weapon," Alexander Rukshin, Russian deputy armed forces chief of staff, told Russia's state ORT First Channel television. The same report was later shown on the state-sponsored Vesti channel.

"You will now see it in action, the bomb which has no match in the world is being tested at a military site."

It showed a Tupolev Tu-160 strategic bomber dropping the bomb over a testing ground. A large explosion followed.

Pictures showed what looked like a flattened multi-storey block of flats surrounded by scorched soil and boulders. "The soil looks like a lunar landscape," the report said.

In a way this is a good thing, Nuclear weapons are designed to kill people, and lots of them, they also destroy the enviroment in a massive way, a nuclear exchange would be the end of the world.

Govenments maybe more willing to destroy their nuclear weapons, if alternatives that can cause just as much destruction, without the loss of life and polution of the enviroment, are avalible.

I'm not saying that countries should have massive weapons that do huge amounts of destruction, but what is mentioned here is clearly prefereable to a nuclear war, at least some people would survive it, and wouldn't have to stay underground for a few decades.

Nuclear weapons are designed to kill people

As are these new types of weapons.

The weapon detonates and spreads a large quantity of a so called "Aerosol" into the area that is then set on fire by the heat. It will bring the air to literally burn. After that, a vacuum is created. If you survived the fire, the air is sucked out of your lungs quite violently...

Govenments maybe more willing to destroy their nuclear weapons, if alternatives that can cause just as much destruction, without the loss of life and polution of the enviroment, are avalible.

I do agree wit these points and the point you made about the environmental pollution.

So the MOAB has some family now  . I wonder what 1 would come out ontop in a fight ? . MOAB with its very destructive shockwave or the Vac Bomb with its massive firebomb and air starvation

Time will tell but im thinking MOAB for now ( It doesnt destroy the earth like the Vac bomb , only the buildings and personel in the effected area ) . But the Vac bomb is sounding like a very large Napalm bomb to me , crap way to die... :(

the people that design these things are insane. theyre treating human life like a commodity that isnt worth much, and acting like its some sort of competition to devise a weapon that will kill the most people in one strike.

As a species, we're barbaric.

And this is from someone who does enjoy blowing things up .... in video games...

I would contend that we're not barbaric... just very violent.

Most of us rejoice in the thought of violent acts because it is contrary to everything that we, in current society, have been raised to think. Though at the same time most of us are revolted by the thought of actually acting out violent acts.

ugg.....So in order ot reassert themselves they're going to make something to kill people? They could always, oh I dont know, try and help people. Just my thought on the matter.

Everyone wastes so much time and money and hurting each other when it all be used to solve some of those poverty problems and world hunger. This could get ugly....quickly.

Very quickly is right , lets just say i think that kinda bomb is in the wrong hands at the wrong time ( Russia's reverted to the old cold war tatic's with the UK , the RAF has intercepted russian spyplanes . And all this is over russia's refusal to give a assasin over )

As i sayed before its a crap way to die , if your not scorched by the flames then your lungs will get you . I like war and violence but i think that this bomb is too far , weapons should kill a man fast with as little pain as possible

Humanity is neither barbaric nor obcessed with violence in my view, I simpally consider many people to be somewhat selfish. Powerful people in govenments are so afraid to loose the position of power they have that they go to great lengths to protect it.

Recently the british govenment decided to spend billions replacing our nuclear weapons which is pointless as no country can nuke us without prevoking america our Allies or Europe who would be effected by the radiation (not to mention the EU treaty forces them to get involved.)

My point would be that my govenment, like any other, is concerned with the preservation of their power, and having WMDs is a very good way to amass and keep power.

As long as it is on cable TV and far away....

I do realize that sometimes a "strong resolve" aka military action is necessary, but I also realize that the development of weapons perverts the perversion of war even more.
