It may not be as bad as it sounds. '09 and Into Darkness apparently were re-scripted at studio insistence to be more actiony because they didn't think that Trek's usual high-brow style would sell tickets. As long as CBS keeps their nose out of the plot and doesn't force something like the TCW again, it has a chance.

I agree. To borrow the pattern of a quote from The West Wing, "Let Trek be Trek."

This is nice to hear...I hope there will be some true actors not "actors" like many in Hollywood...e.g. barman became action hero..we don't need that..we need characters and actors with carisma... I think about actors like Patrick Stewart Michael Dorn, Brent Spiner, Robert Picardo, John de Lancie and others..
And good plot is needed aswell...

But what time..?? After Nemsis, or during TOS era?? Or maybe use STO timeline??

I'm cautiously optimistic. If the studio meddling CABAL mentioned doesn't happen, the show has a chance.

I assume they'll set it in the new Reboot timeline.

Confirming what was said here, the article says at the end:
The new television series is not related to the upcoming feature film Star Trek Beyond which is scheduled to be distributed by Paramount Pictures in summer 2016.

Yahoo has a list of 14 suggestions for the new captain. Most of them are pretty horrible, but one of them, Ken Watanabe, sounded great to me. Anybody else have thoughts on who should play the captain?

Other than that, I'd like to see more species represented on the crew than TOS or TNG had. The TOS, TNG, and VOY crews were almost entirely human with the majority of the non-human crew being main cast members. ENT is acceptable since it was about Earth Starfleet rather than Federation Starfleet and DS9 actually had a generally diverse selection of Starfleet extras.

And quit with the part-human characters and characters that want to be more human or become more human over time as 'natural character development'. It's been beat to death by now. Between Spock, Alexander, Seven, Troi, and Torres for the part-humans, Data, Odo, Seven and (to a lesser extent) Torres for the want-to-be-more-human characters, and Tuvok and T'pol encouraged or railroaded into being more human, we don't actually see much of the alien crew members' different cultures. What's the point of putting a vulcan on the crew if you're going to take every opportunity to make them less vulcan? For that matter, these people outnumber main and recurring alien characters on everything except DS9. Not that alien characters can't have culture similar to ours or that alien characters should be stereotypes, but just develop them a bit. Worf and Kira were good representatives of their cultures without being overly stereotypical. Worf was more straight-laced and humorless than the average Klingon and Kira was much more angry and confrontational than most other bajoran characters.

Anyway, thoughts on when it should be? Post-Nemesis, Lost Era, between ENT and TOS, etc?

Pardon my language but this is bullshit, exclusively to US broadcast on CBS All Access. Want about the rest of the world? Fans all over the world made Trek successful not just the US.

If this is how CBS is going to treat us they can go jump and forget about doing the new series altogether.

In a world where movies are released on the same date world wide and series are fast tracked from the US like Heroes Reborn and Agents of Shield this is just slack, cruel and disrespectful.

It's not bein released exclusively on CBS All Access, although they did royally botch the announcement by making it royally unclear. It'll available for viewing through all the traditional channel methods, but for streaming exclusively through CBS's little All Access venture. Still kind of stupid, I agree.

That's not what that meant

"CBS Television Studios announced today it will launch a totally new Star Trek television series in January 2017. The new series will blast off with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network. The premiere episode and all subsequent first-run episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access, the Network’s digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service"

It means that it in the US it will be exclusively CBS Television Network in other words no Syndication to other Us Television Networks

Not that it will be only available to US viewers

CBS All Access, is a net service that is available to all countries were not block by local government " think Hulu "

Just to chime in here, I agree it is not going to be exclusively to the US. That would be suicide. What I think it means is that the episodes will be available for on demand streaming via their All Access.

I am glad to see Trek come back to TV.

That would be best... Can they use STO timeline? IMO why not... only expand plot... I can't wait what ship they will make for new series... I just hope it's not one named Enterprise again lol

I sure hope not, it's a terrible timeline and story. Cryptic couldn't write itself out of a paper bag. I'd rather see them adapt the novels or come up with something original.

Well, there's tons of novels set after Nemesis or during any Trek period... How to choose best one??

Typhon Pact series was excellent. That (in my own opinion) is what STO should have been. That would be a compelling story to see on TV.

Nope. CBS dosen't have the rights to the JJ verse, but they do have the right to the Prime . :)
Confirming what was said here, the article says at the end: <snip>
Ah. That's good to know. I don't mind the JJ movies as fun actiony entertainment, but they're not what I would expect from a Trek series. And considering the JJverse timeline was tailored to the movies, it's not exactly the best setting for a new series.

And quit with the part-human characters and characters that want to be more human or become more human over time as 'natural character development'. It's been beat to death by now. Yeah, this. So very much. I want cool alien cultures that are not portrayed as flawed or outmoded compared to the 'advanced and enlightened' human culture. Take a look at B5 for instance. I have fond memories of Sheridan being confronted with Minbari marriage customs - yeah, Delenn was genetically half-human at that point, but she was still very much a part of her culture. Overall, I think they pulled off the whole 'culture clash' thing pretty well without portraying the alien cultures as 'worse' than human culture. (If anything, it was the humans who got the 'what are you even doing' treatment toward the end of the show.)
If you have an alien character, you don't need to make them 'more human' in order to have character development or even just to make them relatable. I mean, for me, Seven was most relatable when she was at her most borgish and clashed with the rest of the crew (or human crew, at least) over her mindset and behaviors.

I sure hope not, it's a terrible timeline and story. Cryptic couldn't write itself out of a paper bag. I'd rather see them adapt the novels or come up with something original.
I think a lot of that comes from creating a timeline to fit the needs of the game, not the other way round. I haven't followed the STO storyline for a long time (heck, I haven't played in years), but that's the impression I have of it.
It's interesting that you would bring up the novels. Considering the stink caused by the new Star Wars movie ignoring the Extended Universe, I am curious what the fandom's reaction would be if the same happened with Trek.

Star Trek books already don't count towards canon. When Star Wars was wholly owned by Lucasfilms, the books counted. When Disney bought Lucasfilm, they had to discard it so they didn't have to be bound. Sucks cor us fans that enjoyed the books but makes perfect sense for the business.

What about a crew that proves themselves in the first two or three seasons (historically how long it takes for a Trek series to find its feet) before being transferred over to the new Enterprise after the loss of their first ship?

If you were talking to me, I meant the Enterprise-F or G. If not, then yeah, prequels and remakes could stand to take some time off.

I would like to see some of the lesser known races to be featured such as the Caitians and Tzenkethi among others.

I have played it up until the start of the Iconian war. To be honest the writing is rather poor, the storylines don't make a lot of sense, there is no fluid direction. It's like a yo-yo jumping from here to there. Really they just seem to make it all up as they go along, rather than having a set story outline. Seriously they should had gotten JMS on board to write their story outline for them.

I absolutely agree guys. Even taking about rebooting B5 was the nail in the coffin for me. I don't mind if they reboot shitty shows to make them better but to do it to the quality ones is not good. Trek didn't need a reboot, nor does B5.

I would like to see some of the lesser known races to be featured such as the Caitians and Tzenkethi among others.

I agree, I'd also like to see a more alien crew, with only 1 or 2 human main characters. I'd like to see an alien Captain for a change and I'd like to see an Andorian in the main cast, like Shran was going to be in season 5 of ENT.

I just saw this new article, discussing when the new series should be set:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...-star-trek-series-should-be-set-in-the-2150s/

My opinion is that reboots and the past (prequels) have been done to death. I say move into the 2390's timeline. Explore what has happened in the 15-20 years after VOY/DS9 have ended. What did the events of those series do to shape the galaxy? Did slipstream become common place? Does the Federation now have a presence in the Delta Quadrant? What about the Borg, are they gone like in the Destiny novel or are they still kicking away in the Delta Quadrant? So many stories to have in the future, and very few restrictions than going and doing another prequel. The 2150's would be good for a movie set in the Romulan war, but not as a series.

I know I have said it before and I will say it again. Adapt the Typhon Pact books into a tv series. We already know from Enterprise that the Klingon Empire will join the Federation in the future and the Typhon Pact would be the best starting point for that end. It would explore an unwritten future for the series instead of trying to shoe horn a story that will fit into the past or needlessly retcon something that is already established. I also think the Lost Era would be great story telling too but, I would still prefer to move forward instead of looking back or starting over.

The only thing I didn't like about the Typhon Pact books was what they did with the Breen. I loved the mystery behind the Breen and would much rather keep it that way. I love them as a physical counterpart to the Tholians.

They already did half of the 2150s on ENT. The rest of the decade would be better served with a Earth-Romulan War movie or miniseries, or with a book series following the NX-01 crew. They could start a series off with the War, but where would they go from there? Also, only TOS is generally considered to have had a strong first season, with the other shows taking two or three to really pick up. Do we really want to have one of the defining events of that century happen while the writers still don't know what they're doing? Besides, how ENT fits into the timeline is still a bit of a mystery. Setting any show right on its heels would inevitably result in an official timeline that would piss off somebody.

Post-Nemesis could work. There's a lot of stuff you can pick up on and there's 30 years between Nemesis and STO. Plenty of time to place something without stepping on the toes of any official stories.

The Lost Era would also be nice. The shows have always ignored the books, and books are all that covers that span of time. They could probably have a new crew on the Enterprise-B and follow it to the ship's destruction, but the Enterprise-C probably wouldn't work, mostly because of Yesterday's Enterprise.
