I finally saw Beyond today. I was surprised at how much better it was then the rest of the reboots. The characters felt like the writers gave them more depth than in the first two movies. I'd buy the Bluray when it comes out. Still not 100% on board with the reboot universe, but still enjoyable. I'd give it 4/5 stars.

Honestly if the first two movies were like this I think I'd like the reboot universe better, and if they colored the Enterprise more like the original series with red bussard collectors. There are quite a few images on the internet where people have taken the JJ-prise and colored it TOS style and I think it looks way better.

I've just seen it - I think its the best of the rebooted movies so far. And feels more like proper Trek

It did throw up a few quibbles, and things that I think could have been better.
Anyone who hasnt seen it and doesn't want any spoilers - look away now!

Some nice touches - the inclusion of a photo of the original cast among Ambassador Spock's possessions

While I know the venerable Takei isn't happy about it, I could care less that Sulu likes other men. Good, quite frankly, its an aspect that Star Trek has to date stayed away from. I also liked that he and his partner have clearly got a child together (adopted, or surrogate, who knows) - while HER name isn't revealed, it clearly has to be Demora Sulu, future Captain of the Ent-B.

Commodore Paris also made me chuckle - one of Tom's ancestors perhaps?

And so... we now have the JJ Enterprise A. Which looks slightly different in where the Nacelles and Pylons connect and thats it. disappointing to say the least, theres a few things we could have done differently - for example, the more traditional colours would have been nice. Use of the Gabe Koener version (ok, yes, thats a long shot I know). Or....there is fan version that looks like the original 'A' crossed with the JJ-prise, which would have been cooler than this slightly differently slung one. Missed opportunities.

I like the Franklin - yes, its a bit of a modified NX, and i did like how Scotty mentioned it having the polarisable hull plating, spacial torpedoes and pulse phase cannons that ENT used. And also the shot of the old Shuttlepods.
Unfortunately, that leads into the biggest issue for me though, continuity-wise:
We already know that the time-line changes long after the ENT-era. So why mention that the Franklin is the first Warp 4 ship?
That makes no sense, when the NX-01 was Warp 5 capable (and NX-326 comes a long way after.....).
Its clearly newer than Archer's Enterprise - as its mentioned that it comes into service after the Xindi and Romulan Wars, after the birth of the Federation - so why state Warp 4, surely it should have been Warp 6 to fit the timeline?
Which actually leads to a second issue - while i loved Scotty's reference of the ENT's weaponry, by the end of ENT, the NX-01 carried photon torpedoes.... why doesn't the Franklin?

Other than that though - brilliant :)

Ok, questions about the Franklin have been answered:
http://trekcore.com/blog/2016/07/heres-where-the-franklin-fits-in-the-star-trek-timeline/

which I guess makes sense. Mostly. Although - it doesn't explain the weaponry as surely that would have been upgraded to use the same as the NX-class during the Romulan war....

Saw the movie on the pre-premiere here in Norway: 11th. of August (main premiere was 19th. of August). Yeah, Norway got this movie late.

Anyway, I loved the movie and I think this movie was the best rebooted Trek so far. :)

A few spoilers:

There was many references to past Trek in the Prime-verse, both series and movies. Here's a few mentioned:

- JJ-Enterprise can saucer-separate, and did so then attacked by the swarm ships. The saucer-separation and the saucer crashing into the planet, was a nice reference to "Generations", there Enterprise-D did the same.
- Scotty mentioned that he didn't wanted to beam up both Spock and Bones at the same time as he feared that would cause a transporter-malfunction that would fuse them both. Nice reference to these two:
In "Star Trek - The Motion Picture", two people were transported then the transporter malfunctioned, resulting in them both fusing and died soon after.
The episode "Tuvix" from Voyager has Neelix and Tuvok becoming one after a transporter-malfunction.
- There is a green hand coming out of empty space and grabbing the ship, mentioned as one of the possibilities for Franklin's disappearance. This green hand is actually shown in the credits, and the hand is a reference to a TOS-episode.
- Another possibility mentioned for Franklin's disappearance, is a wormhole, which can be a reference to both Voyager and DS9. Also, didn't the Voyager probe (the one that became V'Ger later) disappear through a wormhole as mentioned in "Star Trek - The Motion Picture"?

These are only a few of the references, too many to list them all. But it gives you an idea. :)

I admit wholeheartedly that I love the AR/Kelvin/JJ-verse.

I love these films because they are different than other Trek that has come before and I love the actors and their characters. There's something about the older era crews that just clicks with me the way that TNG-DS9-VOY never did, as much as I enjoyed those series. And I think that the ensemble in the JJ-verse is spectacular.

The movie itself was the best of the three, I admit this also. The only thing that has been missing for me from the reboots is a proper Wrath of Khan style space battle. Oh how I would love a film version which uses TOS' "Balance of Terror" as a blueprint!

And now some spoilers:

Enterprise design:

The Enterprise A at the end of the film has two big differences. Outside of the straighter pylons and the removal of the little hood on top of the spinning buzzards, the neck of the ship also now connected to the front of the secondary hull, much closer to Matt Jeffries' original design. The original JJ-Conny had the neck coming out of the middle of the secondary hull.

I like the design of the JJ-Prise so I actually don't mind at all the original look. I even preferred it to the more Prime universe revisions of the JJ-prise-A. And to me it DEFINITELY looks WAY better than that STD...err, Discovery ship. :lol2:

And regarding the Franklin:

The Franklin is older than the NX-01, which is why it was a "Starship Class" ship (A nod to the original Conny in TOS). That is also why it was the first ship to reach Warp 4.

In ST:ENT it is stated that there was a period of about three to five years between the Warp 2 and the Warp 5 launch. The Franklin was launched I believe in 2155 (I think) straight in the middle, going by the information given in the episode "First Flight".

Like the Intrepid and that other ship that appeared in the show, the Franklin was one of an entire fleet of ships that existed prior to NX-01's launch. During the series, they mention the fleet several times. The reason for the higher registry number in the Franklin is not because it's newer than NX-01, it's because due to Archer's role in the creation of the Federation, the NX-01 was the first official ship of the newly created UFP. The older ships were then assigned new registry numbers as UFP ships as opposed to United Earth ships. This was the explanation given by the Franklin's designer, obviously it wasn't explained in the film but I think that sounds ok.

I'm very disappointed with this movie not having more success as I eagerly await the next one, as long as they're not looking for whales. :lol2:
