• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

We have a policy of fairness and a non harassment environment, with the staff quick to act on the rare occasion of when this policy is breached. Feel free to register and join our community.

You know those professors who teach you how to do something by teaching you all of the ways not to do something? That's what I'm gonna do now. These are some of the worst designs I've come up with, and hopefully you all can avoid them.

I'm going to have to agree with Z a bit here about the Anubis. While not all that great in it's present form, I think that the concept has potential. Try moving the saucer further back on the secondary hulls and see how it looks then.

Hmm, actually, of those three, it's the Caffrey that I see as having the most potential, but I'd say not as a Federation ship. It looks like it could make for a very interesting unknown-alien design, though.

The Aurelia also has some potential, if you get rid of the secondary hulls and aim for something more Sabre-class in shape.

Most of the pictures you took of the Bach aren't too flattering, but that first one actually looks pretty cool.

Yeah, I think that only certain aspects of those are bad. Overall, their concepts are good. Especially the first one as Cabal said.

As artists we are our own biggest critics. I rather like the Caffrey, it's different which is what I find good about it. I don't use Sketchup, I assume that is what you're using so I don't know how easy/hard it is to use. But you've done well and should be proud of what you've accomplished.

Thanks Majestic! And yeah, I do use Sketchup for all of this. It's pretty easy to use once you get the hang of it, although I haven't tried comparing UV mapping between Sketchup and Milkshape yet

I personally use Milkshape, it doesn't have the advanced tools of Sketchup, Lightwave or 3d Max etc but I have used it long enough and have tried to work with peoples models from sketch up and for a low poly game Milkshape does work better, easier learning curve too. A lot of the advanced programs extrude parts from a larger one, for a low poly model that isn't the best way to do things, especially for unimportant items like a ship bridge, nacelle pylons etc. Layering them on top or just inside the saucer/hull is a better way of doing it as it can depending on the model cut a huge amount of poly's from the overall model. It does make texture creation a bit more difficult I'll give it that.

Whether you have seen any of my work or not, I'm not sure but I can generally get pretty good detail close if not more than a higher poly model by building it this way. For low poly in any case most of your detail should be in the textures. Especially for stock Armada/Armada 2. Fleet Ops thanks to the updates they made to the graphics and engine, you can get away with much high poly's without having to worry as much about lag. But still detailed textures can make the world of difference.

Not saying you should change but Milkshape from my experience, it just gives me more control even if it takes more time to make a model. UV mapping in Milkshape however is a real pain in the back. In fact I use another program to UV map the textures then use Milkshape to rearrange them to fit on the blank texture.

I'm not sure if this was any help whatsoever, just thought I'd add that incase you were interested.

Ouch, I just realised it's been 9 months since I used Milkshape and did any modelling/texturing. :lol2:

What program do you use for UV mapping?

Ultimate Unwrap 3D Pro, it wasn't free I had to purchase it but I feel it's paid itself off. I bought it about 2 years ago I think.
