Just downloaded a copy of MS3D and had a quick play around. Seems straightforword in some respects, but it's different enough from maya that I can see frustrations ahead (zooming for example  )

Now I know that milkshape tutorials are probably everywhere (and I've already found a few), but does anybody have any that they recommend as being a good tutorial?

Zooming can be done with the scroll-wheel on the mouse. The Shift-Key makes you zoom in or out faster.

As for tutorials: check the Milkshape website or the website of the makers of Ms3d, there ought to be a tutorial question.

If you have any questions, fire away! There are a few users who use Milkshape (including me) who can help you out.

I can only echo what Intrepid has said. But remember that the face tool and reverse face option in one of the drop down menu's are your best friend here. :)

Is there a way in MS3D to cut a mesh and creating new vertices alongside the cut?

That sort of function from my understanding uses boolean and as such theres no function in MS3d to do it.

If you select the faces you want cut out and regroup them into another mesh group that might do what you want.

you cant cut out any geometry, you can only cut out the polygons that are already there.
creating vertices alongside a cut is possible with the extrude option. Try it out and youll probably find out how it works in a short while

I've recently had to install MS3D on a new machine and I cant for the life of me remember how to install the plugins. I assumed it was just a case of dropping the files in the base folder but that didn't seem to work.
So what do I need to do to get the plugins to work (having the same trouble with the help files as well amusingly)?

In my machine, all the plug-ins are contained in a folder called "Source' in the base directory:

C:\Program Files (x86)\MilkShape 3D 1.8.2\Source

That's where mine are, although I've installed 1.8.5 (beta). Maybe I should try 1.8.4 instead.

Is milkshape 3D still usable on windows 10?
Or is there another program now to use or plugins for 3D programs?

Yes, I still use Milkshape v1.8.5 on my Windows 10 laptop.
The website has a number of plugins that allow import/export of specialist formats.
There are alternatives to Milkshape, for example Blender is a popular free modelling program. I'm not sure if there are plugins that allow export as sod format though.

Oh cool thanks for the info, yeah I use blender and 3D builder to fix 3D printing stuff mainly for cosplay. But still learning. I guess milkshape is my next program to get then.

Milkshape is very, very crude when compared to Blender. I don't know if Blender can be used to hardpoint and export sods, but that is the only reason to use Milkshape if you already use Blender. If Blender can do it (any Blender users please chip in here) then there would be no point to using Milkshape.
Oh, and feel free to create a thread about your 3D printing, I'm sure people would be interested to see.

Yeah there is no import or export plugin for blender, but I guess you could make it in blender, export as obj file and then import into milkshape to export as sod file.
I’ll look into find my printed stuff and get some photos up.

I've personally reverted to version 1.8.4 as all the tools are way more stable and you get back the ability to d boolans.

Wait there's a Boolian tool in Milkshape? I never knew that.
I've never really had issues with 1.8.5 stability, but then I only use it for hardpointing.

Yes, there are, but you have to download that separately from Milksape's webpage in the downloads section.

Those will not work in 1.8.5 as I could attest, but they should work in 1.8.4
