• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. [Help] Lightmap Problem

I've been thinking of using the Admirals Sovereign to replace the one in the Fleet Operations mod, but seem to have a problem with the lightmap, namely the saucer is only partially effected by lighting (with the attached image showing how it looks with no map light at all).

Another member of the FO forum mentioned something about 'incorrect material settings' but I have no experience with models, so I was wondering if anyone here could help?

I told him I thought it was the the material settings. It seems that it might have a black light or something on it like that planet you fixed that had a red light on it.

The hull is partially illuminated (non-glowy parts), but the nacelles (non-glowy bits I mean) are not

Ah the non-glowy bits aren't suppose to be illuminated at all; thats why they are non-glowy:confused:

yeah, the glowy part of the saucer(other than the windows, ect.) should not be glowy. there is no light on that map, so there should be no light on the model except what is supposed to be glowing in the alpha-channel.

Your material settings are probably the first culprit failing that check material tags.

Is there a method that doesn't need Milkshape? I don't have any money, so I can't use it.

Some here can hex-edit it. I would seriously like to learn how to 'hex-edit' a model, but I don't even know what it means other than it requires a good hex-editor.:lol2::drool:

I think hex-editing lets you do stuff like change material settings, textures, and hardpoints.

Not easily. Hex editing only really allows you to easily change texture names, not allocations or hardpoints. Anything else requires Milkshape or something like it.

Hex editing is not easily done and probably would not be the best way to start an A2 modding career.

I am curious as to what map you took these pics on. Is it a Stock map? I do not recall any of them being this dark. I am also pretty sure it is not one of my maps either, since I spent a great deal of time making sure things such as you've pictured here do not happen. I think the problem may just be the map lighting, since all the ships seen are the same color as the supposedly broken Sovvy. Looks like the Ambient settings on the map are at zero and the Directional Lights are non existent.

This is in FO, and he removed the map lighting to show that part of the hull was glowing.

Even if you had Milkshape, you could not change much of the model, because the MS3d sod-importer can only import stock A2 meshes.

Does the saucer section use a different texture than the main hull? If yes, you could try to compare those two textures. Maybe the saucer textures have a different set-up than the hull textures.

Hmmm - I see what you mean, and to be honest, Majestic is correct, as far as I can tell - the saucer must have its own mesh group and texture file, and the material settings for that mesh group seem to be set lighter than the other groups on the model if it is as I have described (and as Majestic noted) then it really is a two minute fix. If you want, send it to me, I will fix her (I have the appropriate tools)

I will PM you with my email address.

yep yep, the Emissive colour isnt set to black (0,0,0)
Theres nothing you can do without MS3D plus hacked SOD Importer.

I could probably edit this ship for you.
you can send it to me via e-mail. But i havent too much time...

The problem's been fixed by Megadroid, over on the FO forum.

Yes, the saucer material had very low ambient values; I just zeroed them.
