Along with Torchwood another spin-off is apparently in the works according to these reports:

I personally am eager to explore any spin-off from Doctor Who but I am not sure the timing is right if this spinoff does happen. Torchwood has not even been filmed yet and having the new series of Doctor Who along with Torchwood and the K-9 series is a case of having too much too soon. I mean look what happened to Star Trek - TNG ended in 1994, DS9 for a short time was the only Trek show on television until the arrival of Voyager in January 1995.

Too much too soon is a bad move. Star Trek had clowns running it though.

From Outpost Gallifrey:
""He has been rusting in his kennel for too long," says today's Times. "Now K9 is taking centre-stage with his own £3 million animated series and a range of high-tech toys." In a rather unsurprising development to anyone who has followed the trail of rumors - first reported on Outpost Gallifrey, in fact, nearly two years ago - K9 will feature in a new animated spinoff series worked on by one of his creators, Bob Baker, and made by Jetix Europe. "Doctor Who's faithful robotic assistant, who will be reunited with his master on Saturday in a special guest appearance on the revived BBC show, will become a star in his own right -- equipped with a lethal blaster -- in a computergenerated series made in partnership with the Walt Disney Corporation. K9 Adventures will be a 26-episode comedy-fantasy series set in outer space. The new-look K9 is a galactic crime-fighter -- far removed from the underpowered pup given to Tom Baker in 1977. Bob Baker, co-creator of the robot dog, promises to give his pet 'a sleek new look using state of the art CGI animation mixed with live action'. The new series is being made by Jetix Europe, owner of 14 children's television channels, which are screened to 43 million households across Europe and the Middle East. Disney is the majority shareholder in Jetix, which hopes to distribute K9 Adventures through mobile phones as well as its UK television channel. The series may also be sold to terrestrial commercial broadcasters. Contractual obligations mean that the Doctor is unable to join K9 on his space mission -- Doctor Who is owned by BBC Worldwide -- but K9 Adventures is the property of Bob Baker, whose writing credits include the Oscar-winning Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit and Paul Tams, a veteran Doctor Who designer. Baker said: 'It's thrilling to be able to offer younger Doctor Who fans the chance to get to know K9. I believe they will love the 21st century K9 as much as past generations did when he appeared in Doctor Who.' K9 partnered the Doctor from 1977 until 1981, and Saturday's special episode features a reunion between dog, master and Sarah Jane Smith, Tom Baker's assistant, again played by Elisabeth Sladen. They investigate sinister events at a modern day school run by Anthony Head of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame. An animated K9 allows his creators to rectify some original design flaws. When the metal mutt was first presented to Tom Baker's Doctor his motorised noise drowned out the actors. His painfully slow movement meant that the dog, with his catchphrase 'insufficient data', was often more hindrance than help.""

The name of this thread may have to be changed since the article does not state whether the series will feature Sarah in it.

Recently found out that since the series is not being made by the BBC, it will not feature Sarah at all.

Finally an update on the series:
From Outpost Gallifrey:
"More on K9 Series
July 18, 2006
At an appearance this past weekend, K9 creator Bob Baker revealed that the new planned K9 spinoff series would not be animated, but in fact would feature a blend of live-action and CGI: K9 himself would be a CGI creation, but the show would otherwise be recorded in front of cameras. Baker noted that the idea of the series being animated was merely a press rumor but was never intended. Baker stated that scripts had been written (or were being written) for 26 thirty-minute episodes, and a test reel had been completed with footage specially filmed to show the look of the new series. The series is being planned to air in early 2008 and is an independent production with no further ties to the BBC or the Doctor Who property. (Thanks to Nicholas Markwell)"

Park Entertainment has released plot details about the show:
http://www.parkentertainment.com/projects in development.htm
"K9 – The Series

PREMISE

Somewhere in the future…

An old Prairie class spacecraft is drifting towards distant stars. She is The “ Platte †once used for the colonisation of Asteroids.

On board are:-

SLOCUM - mid-thirties, rugged, taciturn who thinks of himself as a dealer in valuable commodities - others would say he just collects junk! He is a loner – a space gypsy! It's the only way he knows. He's in no hurry to get anywhere and he stays well off the beaten track.

DJINN - a V997 (F), an overactive computer module in the shape of an attractive young woman. She was programmed by the ship's previous owners to provide stimulating conversation. Something that SLOCUM would happily change if only he had knowledge of her operating codes!

Together they discover an apparently abandoned battle cruiser. Whereupon they meet K-9!

The adventures begin"

Thanks to an update by JamesValentine1979 in the FAQ at the K-9 Adventures section of the Gallifrey forum, I have just received new information regarding this series:
Broadcast Magazine has listed Andrew Nicholls and Darrell Vickers (other than K-9 co-creator Bob Baker) as writers.

The expected delivery date is July 2008.

Since you have to be a member of the Gallifrey forum to read the FAQ, I am now providing a link elsewhere that has reported on this news:

Apparently K-9 Adventures is an Australian production.

As reported by Outpost Gallifrey, Australia's Film Finance Corporation has approved funding for the series.

In a news release it says: "When we meet him in the new 26-part Australian kids' show K9, this highly intelligent creature is guarding an abandoned prison transportation craft."

The series looks like will be shown on 10 as Outpost Gallifrey also says that 10 has come onboard the series.

Recently noticed that the show is now simply called K-9 instead of K-9 Adventures.

Myk Gantt at the Doctor Who Forum posted the following links there:
Children's/youth in Pre-Production. | Encore Magazine (April, 2008)
PFTC - Oscar Writer in QLD For New Action Series

According to the former link production on the series has recently started on June 5 and will wrap up on November 30.

The latter link says that Bob Baker is in Queensland for filming of the series.

Note: It says that Baker wrote nine episodes of Doctor Who!?! Obviously it meant nine stories.

Anyway it is good there is some news about it after a very long while.

In this year's SFX Doctor Who special Lis Sladen who as Sarah Jane Smith co-star with the metal dog in the 1981 one off K-9 and Company and is currently the star of The Sarah Jane Adventures was asked why the former was not a success that the latter had been.

She said:
"Because I don't think it was written particularly well. Well set it in the country where the robot dog kept getting stuck?"

With the K9 show to be set in space K9 in this show should not have the same problem as the K9 did in K9 and Company.

In DWM 409 the special report by Jonathan Blum has revealed the names of the cast members:
19 year old Keegan Joyce plays Starkey
16 year old Phillipa Coulthard plays Jorjie Turner
Robyn Moore plays June Turner, Jane's mother
Robert Moloney plays Professor Gryffen
20 year old Daniel Webber plays Darius Pike, Professor Gryffen's 15 year old assistant.

It is unknown whether John Leeson will again provide the voice of K9 for this series.

The series is planned to premiere in Australia at the start of 2010 with UK and US airings yet to be determined.
