• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

We have a policy of fairness and a non harassment environment, with the staff quick to act on the rare occasion of when this policy is breached. Feel free to register and join our community.

Hi folks...

My name's Chris; my handle's PreciousRoy.

I guess I should begin my saying that my favorite Trek ship design is the Akira class, which I am still in love with today, nearly 20 years since Jaeger designed it.

I'm still playing ST: Armada II. These days I've been playing a heavily edited, personal version of the Future Wars mod, and preparing to go a little bit further to get the AI to be more devilish and fun for me, and to continue to put the kind of ships and game balance I prefer in. My Federation side is almost completely modded, with more of the Pathfinder, First Contact, and Voyager series of ships in play (Defiant, Nova, Akira, Norway, Steamrunner, Prometheus, Luna, a really good-looking Aegian, and so on).

For 13 years, I've been dreaming of a Borg side that does not resource from anything other than enemy ships, building into three different pathways-- Quads and Cubes, Triangles, and Spheres-- with no bases and no research except stealing special weapons. I have yet to even come close to something that works, and never found anyone else that cared to work on it with me.

My next step in my mod of FW is to get Fighters taken care of for all races, which is what attracted me to MSFC in the first place-- I really like the Warfang class Klingon fighter model. I have been trying to add the Hades class (the one that looks a great deal like a Voyager-era Olympic class) with a special weapon that buffs Life Support (a mod of the Aegian's Shield Boost with a Blue wave instead of a green one), but have not yet managed to do that successfully. Once I have every non-Borg side with the right kind of fighter crafts, I will work on trying to add a 7th side-- I'd like to put an updated Species 8472 back into the game as the Undine, with new weapons and abilities. And then I'd like to do a lot more with planets; I'd like to make them terraform-ible, develop-able (defensive planets, spy planets, listening planets, etc), HUGE, and beautiful at a massive scale.

If I ever get the Borg to do what I want to, I will probably leave the current FW Borg in, slightly modded in appearance to be the Resistance (STV: Unimatrix Zero 1 & 2).

If anyone has any suggestions or ideas to share, they would be most welcome!

Hello there, and welcome to MSFC! :)

It's always good to see other active A2 modders. You wouldn't happen to be the PreciousRoy who used to hang out at Filefront back in the day? I think I remember someone by that name.

Yes, that was me! I got lots of good advice over there (going with the Future Wars mod was someone's brilliant suggestion and I've stuck with that ever since), and help with problems, too. I think some folks may remember me for the 'Manigot Line' of turrets I liked to erect in base defense.

Welcome to MSFC mate, great to have you with us.

As Terra said, it's great to see another A2 modder joining our ranks. :D

Welcome to MSFC! If you're looking to improve the AI, I'm pretty sure Freyr did some great stuff with it back in the day. You might try to track down what he's made and see what you can learn from it.

Hello:
And welcome to MSFC! :D .

Also, I like your ideas of fighters, I am wondering how you would be handle them ingame.

Keep it up!.

Thanks Chiletrek!

It started with wanting to see the Peregrine fighters from the Maquis side in Future Wars on the Federation; I just prefer it to the Venture II. I put it on my side as something Outpost bases can build, but then felt I was giving myself a really unfair advantage to the other Sides to have on the Fed Side. Then, because I'm anal retentive, I had to change the Fed Carrier (the Typhon) to Valkyrie fighters.

As FW includes carriers with ships, I just began to add those ships into the each race, but some of the races were never meant for much of a close-up look (small polygon count workerbees). So far, I have the Dominion/Cards, Klingons, Romulans, and Maquis with their carrier fighters... but I'm looking to put sexier fighters in (like the Warfang), and leave the Carrier fighters with their Carriers.

Not to be a FO Fan boy, which I am not. But have you considered using FO as a base for your mod? Only reason I am suggesting it, is that it has carriers in it with fighters that fly around and attack automatically. Might work better than what you can do in stock, plus gives you more modding options and if you use the Stock A2 mod as a base you won't notice the difference in-game if you prefer the look of stock A2.

Some food for thought. ;)

I might have to start over with FO. I just got an 8 GB laptop that I'm running ST:A2 on... previous computers ran very slow on FO, but I'll bet this one might just sing. Thanks, Maj!

No problem mate, there are people here that can help you out with modding FO. Got a question or a problem, no doubt they'll be able to help.

Welcome. I thought I recognized the name from over at FF. Nice to see lots of existing and new members coming over.

I'd be interested to know what kinds of changes you're doing with your AI. And are you referring to the build lists or the AI personality files or both.

I have an AI thread in the Armada 2 modding and editing forum with a bunch of testing I did. Maybe you'll find something useful?

I hadn't really considered changing the actual AI, just using the build list to develop strategies, like how many fighters each side keeps at a time... but I'll have a look at your thread, Rifraf, thanks!

Hello:
Well, I am still modding lots of non-trek franchises and most of them use fighters. So, I can kinda understand your modding and how tricky can be to get fighters done properly.

I am really considering what Majestic said about going into FleetOps. Maybe even to use the "Classic" mod since it keeps the Armada2 feel but using the FleetOps goodies.

That Aeon class is gorgeous. Oof. It may replace the Valk!

And I admit I have already been to see your Cardassian fighter and plan on using it!

Welcome to MSFC! By the sounds of how you described your install, sounds like you've been inside Armada II for a number of hours/days! Always great to get new veterans!

Hello:
Modding a game is not as easy as it sounds (although some games are just a nightmare :D ), but that is why communities like this one exist: to lend a hand :) .
