• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

We have a policy of fairness and a non harassment environment, with the staff quick to act on the rare occasion of when this policy is breached. Feel free to register and join our community.

Greetings everyone!

I've been playing Armada 2 for about six months now, and it's a great game. I love modding this one, it's pretty easy and tough all at the same time.

Any special tips and tricks I should know? In tinkering with the game I've broken it a few times, so apparently it's really sensitive. I downloaded the Big Book of Modding, and it's been a great read -- any other tools (like a Mission Editor) that I should look at?

Anyway, thanks for having a great site, and I hope to contribute to the community once I improve the skills. Thanks! :D

Welcome to the site :)

As for tips for modding Armada2 - I can only say learn by doing, the best way to pick up all the tricks for modding the game is to try everything lol. Good luck in your modding efforts :)

Welcome Kargill :) Yeah, Armada is sensitive, and at times moody, but it's a good game to challenge your creativity. I'm afraid that there isn't a mission editor for Armada, though there is a map editor.
As for tips and tricks, well...there's a lot o.o There are a lot of Armada modders here who know their shtuff, and are more than eager to help out ;).

Thanks for the warm responses everyone. :D

I've known about the Map Editor, and made a few of them myself (learning the pathing stuff was neat :D ) -- I'll be happy to make my best ones available. The one I'm really proud of takes a lot of horsepower to run since it's a LOT of nebulae and asteroids (but it's cool-looking).

The trouble I ran into was using modded ships and stations in the campaigns. Sometimes it worked out fine, but other times it didn't do much more than crash the game. Custom ships (like the Nova Class) tend to crash the game if used in a campaign. Do maps store ship and station data in WITH the map file itself? If so, do I need to edit the map and then re-save it WITH the extra ship data?

Or is there just some finer point I'm missing? I'm sure you folks know, and I follow instruction well. :D
