Hello everyone.

I need some help. I need to know of any "free-roam" games. These are titles like GTA3 and Driv3r. I am aware of the full line of GTA and Driver games. I am looking for any other titles that are for the PC or Playstation2 or XBox360. If you know of one, let me know.

Oh, and added to the list of "Free-roam" games I know of, is the game called Just Cause.

And before anyone asks, a "Free-roam" game is a hybrid between a 3D FPS and a Driving Sim.

Well theres the True Crime series but they are pretty awful I'm told.

Just Cause is pretty fun though

Both Spider-man 2 and 3 are free roam games (albeit web-slinging instead of cars). Superman Returns is also free roaming but not even half as good.

If you like that kind of thing...

Well. There is Saints Row For Xbox 360, Saints Row 2 is on its way.

Basicly its like a less Graphic Version of the GTA series. (No Blood. but thats about it.)

The Godfather, in various versions. An old favourite of mine.

Could always go with "Morrowind - The Elder Scrolls 3" or "Oblivion - The Elder Scrolls IV". Both are open-ended Fantasy RPGs if you choose to ignore the Main Quest.

Usually, when I need a Fantasy fix, it's where I go.

I love creating my own classes and wandering the countryside lootin' an' plunderin'. One minute, I may be exploring Dwemer Ruins on the hunt for the full set of Dwemer Armor, the next moment I may be beating the ugliness out of an Argonian Vampire...or becoming one...

Oh yes, any game from the Elder Scrolls series is worth a try, there's also Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, but I'm not sure if you'd like it or not

Well this depends on what kind of genre you're interested in Syf. Are you looking for GTA-like games or just any free roaming game at all? Are you looking for a list of any game under this description or just good ones? :D

My choices are PC unless otherwise indicated. Some that immediately come to mind which resemble GTA (And I actually like a whole lot better than those games) is Mafia; I have the PC version and it is a fantastic game. It was made by Rockstar I believe so if you like GTA, Mafia would be a good choice.

Similarly themed is the Godfather game. Almost identical to Mafia and admittedly not the best game around. However if you liked the movie, it features almost the entire cast (With the exception of Pacino) doing the voiceovers and you get to take part in the original movie's most classic moments very cleverly written. Maybe you can find it in a bargain bin?

For PS2 I recommend Silent Hill 2 if you like horror games, extremely psychological and haunting.

If you're into RPGs here are some which might interest you:

Fantasy: I would also recommend TES3-4 like mentioned above. NeverWinter Nights 2 and its expansion are also very good. Two Worlds is free roaming but honestly I wouldn't recommend it.

Sci-Fi: Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic is as close to perfection as I've played in RPGs (The original, not the sequel by Obsidian which was lukewarm at best). I'd recommend Mass Effect based on the game itself but the useless security protection put into it is a huge problem (Check out my long rant on the worst gaming problem thread if you want to know what this is about). If you don't mind that issue then I definately recommend it, it's a terrific game in and of itself.

Horror: Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines was also mentioned and is a terrific game. Like the Elder Scrolls games it's First Person, but the character developments in the story and the rich lore in religious and politically tumoltuous environments really shine.

Free Roam. Hmmmm......would love to get my hands on/be able to run Knights of the Old Republic.

If you looking for an OLD one.....Quarantine! I only had the Demo, but even that was awesome, way-back-when.....
Could use DOS-box or some other likened programme to run it, I suppose....

Also, you could try Might and Magic series. I know that MM3: Ilse of Terra was/is fairly free-roam. I have the Disks, Syf, and they are on stiffy's, so I should be able to send it, and a copy of the password codes, to you if you like. I don't even think it's for sale anymore. Infact, if you go to Abandonnia, you might find it, and more, there.....

Thank you all for the suggestions. The focus of this thread it to find out what other titles have been "free-roam". And mostly, focusing on the GTA style games. Being able to jack a car or vehicle of some kind. Being able to get out and run around (preferably popping off rounds from a choice weapon). And also note, which one don't include Instant death if your character falls into the water. I find Driver3 the best in that aspect. It seems Rockstar and Atari are the top dogs of the Free-roam games market. Atari was superior in their gameplay in D3 to all the GTAs on PS2.

Basically, I am researching these games for my own endeavors into the gaming industry. You've got to love Game research... You play the heck out of a game to "pick it apart" with an an.alytical eye.

Aye, I did something similar for my Multimedia HND (Computer Games Design 1a Module I think), although I actually chose A2/KA2. Wrote 25,000 words on it in the end, crazy :)

Personally GTA on the PS2 was a shadow of itself on the PC, no matter the GTA game in question. I just wish they had optimised and added just a few more things for PC, for example the whole issue with vehicles dissappearing if we turn around then turn back to our original facing (due to vehicle spawning being extremely hamstringed on the PS2 to save its limited memory).

Just Cause seemed to largely fix these complaints, but, well it was a different kind of game really. It never felt as immersive. Fun, but, kind of well, fake.

Syf, check out Nomad Sould as well. It may not be GTA or such, but MAN is that a free-roamer! It may not be new, but it impressed the daylights out of me!!
