First Person Shooter Request/Question

Hi!

I am looking for a good first person shooter that includes Cooperative Multiplayer as well as custom maps, missions and is moddable. :help:

Open Source would be best, but I also take on others. Please keep in mind I have an older system... (NVIDIA GeForce4 MX graphics card, for example  )

The purpose is the following:
Because I grew tired of playing Battlefront I all over and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon not working on my PC I thought of modding an existing FPS into a personal one that my friends and me could play over LAN. Goal is to reflect the life of a future Marine Corps Unit deployed on a deep space outpost/colony.
I am not too much of a fan of shooters where one plays against hordes of horrible aliens... I like tactics and the enemy will be humanoid.

I already thought about modding Operation Flashpoint, but to get models inGame is a tad difficult, as it uses a special modeling/importer program that tends to be very instable.
Of course OfP could provide a fantastic setting for off-world scenarios, but it lacks good interiors (due to game mechanics).
Even SWAT 4 was on my list...

Well in terms of modding and such I am not all that certain but I think Half-Life 2 would be your best bet. Its a great game which I myself play on and off and there are losts of mods floating around, just looking over at the ModDB website and you can see mods for it like Star Trek, Farscape, Stargate and many more.

That would be my suggestion, but it may be a little too powerful for your PC I am not sure, my second alternative would be Elite Force 2. I am not all that up on FPS other than Halo, hey thats another suggestion, Halo for the PC would be a good one as well, it's a rather old game so your PC should handle it (hell the underpowered PC's at Tech can handle it so your PC shouldn't have any problems) and it might suit your needs the best.

Elite Force 2 has a lot of good with it and is one of my favorites. But most of the enemies you are fighting in it are not humanoids, and I believe Intrepid wanted humanoid enemies. Yes, there are humanoid enemies in EF2, like the Borg :)D), Romulans, Klingons, Andorians, etc. But you also have to fight giant spiders and constantly a bunch of Exomorphs which is best described as monster bugs (without wings and just four legs).

Elite Force 1 is more concentrated on humanoid enemies, and only a few non-humanoid ones. In EF1 the humanoid enemies you get to fight are f. ex. the Borg :)D), Klingons, Hirogens Malons, and Terrans from the Terran Empire (somehow they got to our dimension). :)

You may have guessed it, both EF1 and EF2 are Star Trek games.

It is your decision, Intrepid, if you want to play those games as I said that in both of them some of the enemies are not humanoids.

Well, I have played Elite Force I and it did convince me NOT to play EF II. I just did not like it at all.

I am still looking for it... and brining my Operation Flashpoint modding skills up-to-date... until now nothing did really appeal to me.

I haven't played Half Life II or Half Life I yet (only it's Total Conversion Counter Strike 1.6)

Half life 2 is a very good game in terms of moddability, gameplay, and performance. Right now I can play Half life 2 on the normal settings, on my pile of junk Pentium 4 with an Nvidia GeForce 6200. The same can't be said for it's successors, the Half Life II Episodes, but I can still play the original Half Life 2. Only problem is that it's not co-operative in itself, but there is a Half Life Deathmatch game out there that may provide what you're looking for in that area...

Not sure what you'll be able to find in your local stores but this may be your option for these games...

Following from what you siad LT, Id say Half Life would be good for an older machine.

I mean they did an awesome job with CS. and that started life as a Half life mod.

Im not sure about ur Geforce 4 MX Intrepid, but i had a 4 series Ti, and i know that wouldnt be able to run HL2.

Halo has a vast multiplayer network and is moddable, provided you download and install the multiplayer only Halo Custom Edition which was designed for it after you install your copy of Halo, all you'll need to get Custom to work is your CD key. I can direct you to a selection of good maps for it if you want.

Also, as was said, Elite Force. While its true their are some bad maps out there, there are also some great maps. Its also got a large population of fans. IMHO, you should check out the RPG-X mod (currently on v2.1). Oh, and if you want, I can direct you to some good Holomatch maps and some interesting mods.

Intrepid if you decide to go with Halo, PM or email me and I will be able to help you getting started, I won't elaborate on open forum.
