Personally I"m speechless. I am not a fan of the post episode 6 expanded universe stuff, but that is what they are doing. Episode 7 is already planned for 2015.

Do you guys think this will be good for the str wars franchise, or the final nail in its coffin?

On one hand, the less Lucas can mess with, the better, and new graphics could be awesome instead of upgrades and rehashes, but on the other hand, Disney + Ewoks =.....

I don't think its a great thing. Disney is too 3D happy and obviously needs marketing help after the John Carter fiasco(which seems more like star wars practice now)

Of course, maybe we will get force unleashed style fx for force powers? I always wanted to see that. :D

I heard about this a number of hours ago before I went out.

John Carter was awesome, one of the better movies in the past few years. It's a shame it didn't do as well. I think it wasn't advertised enough. I only found out as Kat wanted me out of the house that day and it was playing at the Cinema.

I think the purchase will be a good thing, I think they will do good especially if they keep the Lucasfilm team intact and in at least partial control over any Star Wars production. I also agree the less Lucas has to do with Star Wars, the less he can stuff up. Episode 2, 3 and the Clone Wars series are prime examples of his lets say messing with the storyline.

Remember Marvel's best movies (Iron Man 2, Captain America, Thor and the Avengers) were made after Disney bought Marvel. So I think this is a very good thing.

    Hey, I'm back!!!!

I'm a little nervous, but at the same time excited about this.

I'm a big fan of most of the books, and it'd be a shame if the Extended Universe got messed up by the new movies. At the same time, like you pointed out Majestic, with the recent successful things they've done with Marvel, it'll be cool to see what they can do with this franchise.

Big question for the new ones will be casting too methinks, hopefully they can do better with that than George did.

Yeah, when you put it like that, I think Disney might actually be able to pull it off. Though, I personally like the clone wars series. At least the 4th and latest 5th season so far. Much higher key and made for an older audience. John carter was great too, but again had the worst marketing of pretty much any modern movie. They lost soo much money on that movie, I doubt they will continue its series.

On a lighter note, some funny remarks I have heard/read have been,

"does this make Leia a Disney Princess?"
    And
"Star Wars VII: The Emperors New Groove."

Let's face reality here: Disney can't screw up Star War any further than Lucasfilm did so we may as well hope for the best (which means they cancel everything SW related and burn its existence from the surface of the earth.)

I am going to be cautiously optimistic on this one. There are plenty of non-children movies that Disney made that I have thoroughly enjoyed. The Pirates of the Caribbean series and The Haunted Mansion are a few that come to mind. I would love to see a live action series that takes place in the era of The Old Republic. Lets see what happens.

I'd love to see movies or a series set in Revan's time, my favourite all time Sith, a man who allowed himself to fall to the Dark side to help the Republic in the long-term.

Yeah Lucas is still going to be a creative consultant however we all know creative consultants have basically zero practical input. But considering the mess he caused, one of the most memorable was in Episode III. For years he stated that no bladed weapon could withstand a lightsaber then he introduces electro staff's on Grevious' droids in the scene on the bridge of his ship during the opening battle.

Also Clone Wars has messed up a lot of the book series, to a point that one author's books are now invalid. A book Lucas signed off on years before. It was to do with the Mandalorians.

    Uncanny.
Mickey Mouse and Darth Vader are now working colleagues.

To be honest: the last Star Wars movie basically killed the genre. I like Star Wars as a premise for a game, but I cannot watch that movie without cringing. Maybe it has something to do with that guy playing Darth Vader-to-be looking more like a heroin addict short on supplies rather than someone really really evil.
The only thing really bad-*** was basically - who tought of it - SAMUEL L. JACKSON.

If Disney wants to CPR Star Wars it can only get better. But don't quote me on that one.
(So on that note I agree to Andre27.)

    Different idea: Star Wars (reimagined).

As long as they don't re-boot the original three, those were my favourites and have a feeling that just couldn't be re-done. The prequels yeah sure I have no problem with that.

I also have to say cautiously optimistic.

I think if they go far afield of the existing timeline (future or past) it could be really cool. Near future stuff, meh, it would probably be fine, but in absence of having ever read any of the books, I guess I don't really care. Personally I don't think the new stuff was bad; I quite like Episodes 1 and 3.
One thing which did send a chill down my spine was mention of J.J. Abrams as potential director\producer\whatever. I would be very scared if he actually got his hands on it.
I think as long as they keep most of the LucasArts people on board and don't try put the unitiated and clueless in charge, then it will be alright.

In someways I'm more interested to know what their attitude will be towards fan stuff. Disney is pretty an*l when it comes to Mickey Mouse, I just hope they don't come down on Star Wars stuff now.
I remember something about NBC coming down on BSG material some years back. It just makes one wonder.

While I agree with EAS that, as a star wars movie, the prequil trillogy were pretty bad, I think it is indeed mostly due to the acting. Padme and Anakin were terrible... Obiwan was pretty good, but kinda got worse due to bad script writing, but there were a few good actors. Christopher Lee was good, Samuel L. Jackson of course. And then Liam Neeson who was my favorite. Infact, many of the side characters had good acting, but many of the main ones were terrible, and you can't blame them all on bad writing. I personally enjoy watching Episode 1, especially now with puppet yoda gone and enhanced graphics, but episode 3 only has good graphics going for it. Episode 2 could have been a much better movie if it had less anakin in it and more Obiwan and clone wars fighting. In fact, it is... Just try watching it and skipping anything involving anakin or padme and Episode 2 turns out to be a halfway decent movie with a pretty good plot. Episode 1 has a similar situation if you skip anything with jarjar...

I only ever read one book and that was back in 97, so I am not worried in the least if they screw the expanded universe up, I still feel until it shows up on screen it's not officially canon. I know STar Wars books and such work differently to Trek but that's just the way I think of it.

I too hope JJ Abrams stays with Trek, he did well there and I doubt Star Wars could work the same way even as a reboot.

Yeah they did order Moddb to close down all BSG mods, but went no further and new BSG mods are starting to appear on the site and haven't been taken down.It was probably a desperate attempt for NBC to try and make people play BSG Online, which just suxs hence why people prefer mods. They'd be better to emply the people making these mods to make a BSG game for them. It would really hit the modding and gaming community if Disney tried the same with Star Wars.

Oh yeah I know what you mean I do that quite often when I watch it, that or I just use those scenes as toilet break and drink refilling times. :lol2:

Liam Neeson was my all time favourite prequel actor and character as well. Shame he didn't appear as a force ghost in episode 2 and 3, he only appeared as a voice in episode 2 when Anakin starts to kill the Tusken Raiders. I also agree on the Obi-Wan Kenobi writing and acting.

Dunno man, JJ has sure got the SW pewpew gunes down. :lol2:

But you know.... I would love to see Quigon come back as a ghost to help train luke or his later apprentices... I wonder if Liam neeson would do that? I would definitly be interested in that!

    :lol2: @ pew pew

Well Neeson did well as an authority figure, aka Zeus in Clash and Wraith of the Titans so I think he would do well as a Force Ghost, whether he would do that or not is another story.

Maybe Disney would consider adapting The Force Unleashed into a film to tell the story of how The Rebel Alliance formed. :D

I'd watch that. :excited: It already has a pretty well thought out story. I at very least hope they finish it since the second one kinda had a canon breaking ending with no resolution.

I agree, there is no way to know if this will be good or bad. Historically, Disney makes good films. Not only that, there is a very large number of books on the later events of SW that give alot of possibilities. Only time will tell.

Going by such move as Thor, The Avengers, Pirates of the Caribbean I think we can be confident that it's a good thing. However like any movie sequel I think it's best to go in with no big expectations. That way you can't be disappointed.

I have a suspicion that if they are committed to a post Return of the Jedi trilogy, we may very well see the likes of Ben Skywalker and the Solo Twins.
