So, apparently, when the power windows on my car fail, they roll down. If this had happened in the summer, I would make sure there's nothing valuable in the car and keep an eye on it until I could get it fixed. But this is October in Oregon. It rains constantly this time of year in this area. Now, at the point where most people start pulling out their umbrellas because it's a bit rainy, we Oregonians say, "Eh, it's just a light drizzle, not even enough to put my hood up." So, when I say it is raining, I mean it is raining. And all of them failed. I am extremely unhappy.o_O

The other day, one window would fail to stay up. It rolled up just fine while the car was on, but as soon as it was turned off, it sounded like the motor reversed and the window went down. I eventually got it jammed up. Today, they all went down at some point (except the jammed one) and the controls no longer do anything. I'll check fuses, but there might be something else wrong, at least with that one window.

It could also be the control switch in the door burned out as well

Moved these to a new thread so we don't clutter up the Shout Thread.

---

Found the fuse and replaced it. No change. The controls cause a rapid clicking sound when pressed down, so the issue is probably further down the line than that.

I can't even figure out how to get the interior panels off the doors. It's a '97 Jetta Trek with power windows, but mine don't quite look like the videos or pictures I've found and don't have all the same parts to remove.

Chilton auto repair manual or a Haynes Repair Manuals for '97 Jetta may be your best bet

To state the obvious, its most likely an electrical issue. Rapid clicking could be the auto-stop function (too much current when motor stalls; shuts off the motor)

This clicking occurs when trying to move it both ways?

Not likely that all 4 motors went bad (although.... cold temps tend to make things run worse. You can use silicone spray in the window guides to make it slide better)

If you use switches on the other doors, same thing?

Your switch could be partially stuck in the down position internally (corrosion, or a short someplace). Hence, it always brings the window down and prevents you from puling it back up. Can try spraying deoxit (contact cleaner) into the switch (although best to get it out rather than trying to get through the top).

EDIT: another thing. If you do manage to get the windows rolled up, best to remove the relevant fuse until you can sort out the problem. If there is a short someplace, you definitely want to avoid burning up the whole circuit.

I agree that it sounds as if the switch panel has went bad. Seems there was a power leak onto the down circuit after you turned off the car. It only affected the one window at first but then got worse. The common point will be in the driver window panel as the circuit for all four windows go through there. I would start there. Should be able to pick one up cheep from a junk dealer. Also, as Hellkite said, either of those manuals would have a wealth of information for you.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. Got the door opened up and it looks like the weatherproofing failed and the door electronics got soaked. I might be able to get the windows working again just by pointing a heater at it for a while, but if it rains again and the car isn't under cover, I'll just have the same issue again.

At this point, once I get if fixed, I may just sell it and buy something else. If I can't rely on the power windows to function in the rain, the it's just not worth owning here.

Getting it completely dried out did get the windows working again. Of course, they'll still go down if I put it out in the rain, so the car needs to go; that just won't fly here.
