Reports: Australia's 'Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin killed :( Updated 9/4/2006 1:41

Even though he was a tad crazy at times, I did admire his work in animal conservation and he was very entertaining.

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was killed Monday by a stingray during a diving expedition, Australian media said. He was 44.

Irwin was filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef in northeastern Queensland state when the accident occurred, Sydney's The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on its website.

The Australian Broadcasting Corp. said Irwin was diving near Low Isles Reef near the resort town of Port Douglas, about 1,260 miles north of the state capital of Brisbane.

Queensland ambulance service spokesman Bob Hamil confirmed that a diver had been killed by a stingray off Lowe Isles Reef but refused to say who the victim was until relatives had been notified.
A rescue helicopter was sent from the nearby city of Cairns, and paramedics from it confirmed the diver's death.
"The probable cause of death is stingray strike to the chest," Hamil said.

Staff at Australia Zoo, Irwin's zoo in southern Queensland, said they had heard the reports but could not comment.
Irwin is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!" in his television program Crocodile Hunter, which was first broadcast in Australia in 1992 and has aired around the world on the Discovery channel.
He rode his image into a feature film, and developed the Australia Zoo as a tourist attraction.

Irwin had received some negative publicity in recent years. In January 2004, he stunned onlookers at the Australia Zoo reptile park by carrying his 1-year-old son into a crocodile pen during a wildlife show. He tucked the infant under one arm while tossing the 13-foot reptile a piece of meat with the other.

Authorities declined to charge Irwin for violating safety regulations.
Later that year, he was accused of getting too close to penguins, a seal and humpback whales in Antarctica while making a documentary. Irwin denied any wrongdoing, and an Australian Environment Department investigation recommended no action be taken.

Irwin was also seen as a vocal critic of wildlife hunts in Australia. The federal government recently dropped plans to allow crocodile safaris for wealthy tourists in the Northern Territory following his vehement objections.

Irwin told the Australian television program A Current Affair that "killing one of our beautiful animals in the name of trophy hunting will have a very negative impact on tourism, which scares the living daylights out of me."
He is survived by his American wife Terri, from Oregon, and their daughter Bindi Sue, 8, and son Bob, who will turn 3 in December.

The second shock for Australians this week, racing legend Peter Brock was killed in a single car collision with a tree during the Targa rally in WA this afternoon. What an awful week for Australians. The press are calling it a black week. I couldn't agree more.

It's sad, but I never really thought too much about Steve when he was alive. I thought that he was putting it on for the public. But only the other day I watched a special about him on the Animal Planet channel on foxtel, and realised just what he was. He was passionate to the core about wildlife, and he was so funny and caring. It's a shame that it took his death for me to realise who he truly was.

North Korea Tested Nuclear Weapon

It seems that North Korea tested a nuclear weapon.

The 550 TNT-equivalent nuclear charge detonated at 10.36 local time, Monday October 9 2006.
Experts of the Russian Federation border defense forces acknowledged the test, as seismologic activities have been reported. The South Korean intelligence servies also reported seismic activity. The US Seismologic Service also stated these facts. US intelligence yet declined to answer to the situation.

Just after the test protest rose in the region. China, Japan as well as South Korea expressed their dislike about the North Korean provcative policy.

It is a very alarming situation. This is going to cause a regional nuclear arms race, and most likely, a nuclear confrontation between N. Korea and the U.S.A.

With it being in that part of the world, I expect to hear that all those countries around them start building nukes. It looks to be only a matter of time before there is a nuclear confrontation. It's too bad that the world didn't pay attention during the USA/USSR cold war. These 2 countries have finally started learning to get along, and now, here we go again.:help: :yuck:

The plane crash is not considered an act of terrorism, as planes are allowed in that zone. The plane is known to be owned by the NY Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle, who is believed to be among the dead. But obviously, the picture of smoke billowing out of a building after a plane crash does certainly bring back memories of 9/11.

MANHATTAN PLANE CRASH KILLS FOUR

A SMALL aircraft has crashed into a high-rise building in New York City today, killing up to four people and leaving several others trapped.

The light civilian plane slammed into the 20th floor of a 50-storey building and then fell to the street.

US media have reported that four people are dead and several others are trapped on floors above the smouldering area where the plane hit.

Two bodies were found near the base of the building. At least one was still strapped to a plane seat.

It is believed the pilot of the plane was the starting pitcher for the New York Yankees, Cory Lidle, SKY News reported.

The US Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the plane was owned by Lidle. A spokesman for the New York Yankees declined to comment.

The plane's passenger may also have been connected to the baseball team.

New York State Governor George Pataki said at least two people had died but the exact number had not been confirmed yet.

"There have been fatalities. But it will take a while to get all the specific numbers and details," he told CNN.

A large blaze which broke out after impact has now been extinguished.

The building houses apartments and a hospital, where surgery was underway when the plane hit.

The crash is believed to have damaged about ten apartments.

Fighter jets began patrolling the skies above major US cities directly after the accident.

Authorities said they have no reason to believe the accident is linked to terrorism, after television images of fire and smoke pouring from the windows of a high-rise building inevitably evoked memories of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

However it has also been reported that the aircraft pilot was not in contact with air traffic controllers.

The area is not a prohibited zone for aircraft. It is frequented by personal and corporate helicopters and sometimes light planes.

The accident happened on East 72nd St and York Avenue, near the East River.

Several helicopters have crashed over the years into or near the rivers flanking Manhattan.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has visited the emergency scene and US President George W. Bush is aware of the incident.

he World From Berlin

The World From Berlin

So, North Korea at least seems to have nuclear weapons. If I am not wrong, US Forces consider nuclear weapons of the North Korean scale bomb as tactical battlefield weapons, a.k.a nukes to destroy bunkers or larger infantry platoons or medium enemy bases.
I hope we all agree that nuclear weapons are a pretty sick weapon.

So now why does North Korea want a weapon that is not used? TWO times in history nuclear weapons have been officially deployed (there are of course rumors if he Russkis did use a tactical nuke in Afghanistan 1984). During the Cold War our two major powers on Earth did not dare to put a finger on the red button, knowing of the potential. All the leaders of the Soviet Union and USA from 1945 on have, at least to a certain grade, been reasonable. They all were aware of the danger.

Kim Jong-Il is a madman. In the 90s he played the negotiator between South Korea and China, US foreign politicians called him "Mister Nice Guy". The movie fan that lets his population starve then returned his nation into autonomy from media, economy or similar things. Only the South Korean food transports to North Korea keep the population more or less alive.

So what's this issue from the Berlin perspective?
1) I spoke to government officials, they said they won't do anything larger. Maybe they will do put don't want o talk about it now. Especially were President Putin just visited Germany.
2) At least from here it looks like most nations remain reasonable in this conflict. I just read that Russian officials announced, that North Korea may return to the negotiations. Japan wans sanctions (which I fully understand), the US, too, but the UN Ambassador backed down a little. Since a South Korean is now head of the United Nations, this could grow pretty interesting on the political carpet.
3) I did not end my first thought, the tactical nukes. Will do so now:
So he explosion was said to be equal of about 550 tons TNT. A "usual" tactical nuke of, let's say Russian, arsenal has about the same kinetic energy. A smaller strategic nuke, like the ones France and the UK use on their missile subs, is of about 1 Megaton TNT equivalent.
BUT these smaller nukes are harder to produce, due to several factors of production, as the needed mass of fissionable uranium etc etc.

This crisis, as well as the Iran thing, is the Cuban missile crisis in slow motion.

One the one hand I do understand why he wants that weapon, on the other hand I can' understand why so many countries want such devices. It is a little contradiction, yes. A philosophic way to see it.
But I am not a philosoph, I am military historian ;)

There's a thought hat just strikes me. Just a kilometer from my grandfathers house away in North Germany the Soviets placed SS-N-20 nuclear missiles in the 80s. Guess what target the NATO-Bombers with the Tactical Nukes aboard had.

That's EAS_Intrepid from Berlin, have a nice day.

Saddam Is Going To Be Executed

After the trial against the former Iraqi Dictator the judge came to the decision to sentence Saddam Hussein to death.
Parts of the population celebrated the decison, while others disagreed with it.

Hussein is convicted of mass murder against local minorities in Iraq, the killing of thousands of Kurds with German produced Sarin gas in French built bombs during the Iran-Iraq War 1986.

amnesty international protested against the conviction and declared Saddam's trial as "unfair". ai further disagreed with the death penalty Saddam is sentenced to.

On a note by me: I don't think bombing Kurds with Sarin gas is "fair," amnesty!

other news:
Poland's President Wishes Not To Be Photographed From The Side
President Kazcinski declared a , that orders journalists not to photograph him fron the side. A reason was not said, but Asociated Press members joked, that from the fron hi s double chin is easier to hide than from the side.
The decree has been abolished 48 hours after being passed.

Israel Takes Germans Under Fire
Last week two Israeli F-16 jetfighters took a German Navy ship in Lebanese waters under fire with its board weaponry. The two fighters approached on a low altitude and then fired their board cannons over the ships bow. No fatalities. The German Navy has the mandate to interdict Hezbollah weapon deliveries.

I tried to find some good news, but failed!
Anyone else recognizing hat? No good news in the media at all!
