Superman, Batman Sequels Planned

Warner Brothers is already planning sequels to Batman Begins and Superman Returns, with respective helmers Christopher Nolan and Bryan Singer in line to return, though the latter film doesn't open until June 30, Variety reported.

Neither director's deal is closed yet, the trade paper reported. The studio has hired Jonah Nolan, Christopher's brother, to pen the screenplay for the as-yet-untitled Batman sequel. Warner has options on Batman Begins star Christian Bale and Superman Returns star Brandon Routh.

The next installment in the Caped Crusader franchise is further along in the process, since Batman Begins was released last summer.

Legendary Pictures, which put up half the financing for both Batman Begins and Superman Returns, is expected to board the sequels and split the budgets 50-50 with Warner. In return, Legendary would split all profits.
The Batman sequel is eyed for 2008 and the Superman follow-up for 2009.

Holy Sequel Discussion, Batman!
Bats and Supes follow-ups planned

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Warners is clearly trying to get a head start on the rumour mongers. The company has announced that it is planning sequels to Superman Returns and Batman Begins.
Given that Superman isn’t even out in cinemas yet, plans for the Bat-sequel are already much further along. The follow-up film might not have a title – or a commitment from Christopher Nolan yet – but it has a screenwriter. Chris’s brother Jonathan (also known as Jonah) will write the screenplay based on a treatment by his elder sibling and Batman Begins co-writer David Goyer. All of which at least strongly suggests that Nolan will return, and that that could activate Christian Bale’s sequel option to slip back into the Bat suit.

Bryan Singer, meanwhile, is toiling to finish his Man Of Steel adventure in time for its summer release. The studio has yet to negotiate for him to return to direct the sequel, but Variety reports it’s clearly interested in the idea. It also has an option on the Superman Returns cast and is said to be eyeing a slot for Singer to helm the next film as soon as he’s finished working on Logan’s Run.

Looks like it might all happen and the first Superman movie isn't even out yet! Money, money, money!

Interesting.

Found out from 10 News last night that Heath Ledger has become the Joker.

Here is an article about his casting:
http://www.chud.com/index.php?type=news&id=7269

"BURBANK, CA, 31 July 2006 – As a follow up to last year’s blockbuster Batman Begins, Christopher Nolan is set to direct Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Dark Knight, written by Jonathan Nolan, based on a story by Christopher Nolan and David Goyer. The film will be produced by Emma Thomas, Charles Roven and Christopher Nolan. Additionally, Christian Bale will resume his role as Bruce Wayne and Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger has been cast as The Joker. The announcements were made today by Jeff Robinov, President of Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.

Christopher Nolan revamped the Batman franchise in 2005 with the immensely successful Batman Begins, starring Christian Bale in the title role, which chronicled the early years of the superhero. Nolan first garnered attention from critics and fans in 2000 with the groundbreaking drama Memento, which he wrote and directed. He went on to direct the thriller Insomnia, starring Al Pacino and Robin Williams, and recently wrapped production on The Prestige, with Hugh Jackman and Bale.

Bale was most recently seen in the ensemble cast of Terrence Malick’s The New World. His other credits include Little Women, Portrait of a Lady, Metroland, American Psycho, Laurel Canyon and Steven Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun, which was his first starring role.

Ledger most recently earned Oscar Golden Globe, BAFTA and SAG Award nominations and won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Ennis Del Mar in the award-winning drama Brokeback Mountain. His other credits include Casanova, Monster’s Ball, Lords of Dogtown, The Brothers Grimm and The Patriot.

“Chris’ unique vision is what made Batman Begins such an outstanding film and we could not imagine anyone else at the helm of The Dark Knight,†said Robinov. “We also can’t wait to see two such formidable actors as Christian and Heath face off with each other as Batman and The Joker.â€

“I'm excited to continue the story we started with Batman Begins,†added Nolan. “Our challenge in casting The Joker was to find an actor who is not just extraordinarily talented but fearless. Watching Heath Ledger's interpretation of this iconic character taking on Christian Bale’s Baman is going to be incredible.â€"

that looks so amazing, I cant wait. It looks like it could be better than Begins... although i confess to some dubiousness over what was presumably the batcave... stark white box??
Still... it looks fantastic, and gets rid of my misgivings over Heath Ledger's joker. i still think Jack did it better, but he does look and sound the part.

On a seperate note, why on gods green earth are they making a sequel to superman returns?
it wasnt half as good as BB.
Although I read somewhere that the WB's priority is the Justice League movie, over a sequel to returns. Itd be cool if Bale and that guy from Superman were in it, in their respective roles. I'd also like the guy from Smallville that played J'onn to be in it, in the same role. He's good as the Martian Manhunter afterall.
Not sure who you'd cast as Flash, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern though. they named the other character, but I cant remember which. Think it was Aquaman, but it might be Black Canary. Personally i'd like to see Hawkgirl, but i guess that would be too much like the cartoon. Not that thats a bad thing.
Wonder which GL they intend to use, though i'd bet its Hal Jordan.

Can't they just let old films die? They've all had their moment, surely these producers could do with thinking up something new for a change?

As long as there are comic book fans. They will keep making the movies. I am not sure what I think of the new movies. To me, Adam West will always be the "TV" Batman and Micheal Keaton will always be the "movie" Batman. I will watch the new movies and give them thier fare shot.

Saw The Dark Knight on the day of its release.

Although I admit that I did not like the ending.

Ben McEachen in the Sydney Sunday Telegraph gave the film four and a half stars. This is what he wrote in the last paragraph:
"But how can you argue with an A-grade blockbuster that dares to unleash a villain with no rationale beyond anarchy; heroes who struggle with corruption, power and flaws; and action which blows away the competition."

To Australian viewers:
In At The Movies, David and Margaret liked the movie and both gave it four stars with Margaret saying:
"There are other quibbles, some plot points don’t make any sense at all and I found some of the dialogue, particularly Batman’s hard to follow, but this action-filled exploration of the slippery slope of the divide between good and evil is mostly a very satisfying experience."
