Some people may remember the little roguelike game I did for this year's 7-Day-Roguelike-Challenge. (If you don't, you can find it in the download section!)

Right now I'm working on a new little retro gem again. I'm a horrible painter, even with my trusty gimp. I'm much better with words. So, I prefer to make games that don't require me to do a ton of artwork. Last time it was a roguelike, and this time it's a text adventure (or, as they call it nowadays, "Interactive Fiction"). This will be another short-term project. And it's set in the secret MSFC base.

Yes, that's right! You will be able to explore such famous places as CABAL's cyborg lab, Jetfreak's atelier, the MSFC control room where Maj does his magic (maj-ic), TF's whiskey still etc. Find your way through the vast secret base on the search for missing MSFCians, fight off the invasion of horrible creatures and post the latest troll to the Wall of Shame. Go for a swim in our large underground pools and other recreation facilities. Admire the awesomeness of the ban hammer. Go shopping in the MSFC Gift Shop!

First betas will go up in a few days. Feedback is recommended, it's our base after all. :D Of course this will be msfc-exclusive. No need to keep the uninitiated from streaming into our sacred halls because they think we're nuts.

[SUB][SUB]Your mileage may vary. The KittehWare Game Studios take no respi... responsil... we no pays when you step in kitteh poop. Stoopid hooman.[/SUB][/SUB]

That was supposed to be read like this: "secret underground base" railroad. As in, it's the base that's secret and underground. :p

Everything else is optional, but that litter box is mandatory. We don't want to step in something during the tour.

Make sure that is far from the Airdales

Accordant to Glossary of U.S. Navy slang A.K.A. the "Squid i pedia"

Airedale: A sailor who works on or around aircraft.

Alright, I have the first section done and available in the download section. It's a rather small part of the actual base, but you can already visit some cool places. The adventure is set during an attack by trolls, so some areas might not be accessible without some work. The game ends in the eastern wing currently.

I'd like to apologize for whatever grammar atrocities I might have committed. I didn't write overly long descriptions, so read the text exactly. It's just an alpha, so some things might not be fully finished yet.

Also, apologies to Thunderfoot (who seems a bit wordless) and CABAL (because of the thing with the robot).

Oh, and here's a little summary of commands you will need. Almost all of these are standard in IFs.

look
gives you the room description.

inventory
tells you all the things you currently have.

go [some direction]
moves through the map. We use the compass directions because they are independent of facing, so wherever you look, they are always the same.
Valid directions are west, north, south, east; in some cases you'll also need up and down, as well as inside and outside (if it's a thing you can enter that's inside a room, you can almost always go inside. example: the train).

take [an object]
takes it and puts it into your inventory

look at [an object]
gives you a detailed description of the object. This often contains hints about what to do with it, so look at everything you can find.

open [a door] with [something]
There are some closed doors in the base. If you have the thing that opens them, use this command to do it.

kick [something]
You never know when you need to kick something.

kill [someone] with [a weapon]
Evil guys need to be killified. If you happen to have a weapon, you can do it with this command.

ask [someone] about [something]
Sometimes you might want to ask people about things. Only the most important topics are scripted, and only for Maj right now, so don't expect an answer if you ask Majestic about the night when he and his wife and the kids had barbecue because the weather was so awesome.

talk to [someone]
No topic to ask about? Just talk to people.

insert [something] into [something]
Put things in other things. Right now this isn't even important.

pull [something]
This was intended for levers. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PULL THE KITTEH'S TAIL. Not that you are likely to find him.

EDIT: Sorry, I forgot save and restore. Just in case you want to save the game.

The adventure is a blorb file, that means you will need an interpreter to play it. I've included a JavaScript interpreter you can run in your browser (just open index.html), but you'll need to enable javascript for that to work. If you are serious about IF or just don't like to play in your browser, I really recommend the Gargoyle interpreter, it's hi-tech.

Oh. I wasn't aware of that. (I do a lot of development in Java and therefore always have the latest version on my system.)

If you want more than just Parchment, the interpreter I mentioned above is available on many linux distros, just install the package gargoyle-free.

I am stuck cant help cabal did i miss something?
i love this style of game it is an old mud though different commands and such many of the ones i tried did not work.

ie: con consider, and even a few of the shortcuts i remember.

I for one would like to see this completed and expanded. i can lend some help as i have played various muds over the years and can even do a small bit of codeing if needed. terra ever think of making a MUD? perhaps with the knowledge combined here we can all get one running.

I'm having the same problem Z had. I have the latest Java version but I have a 32 bit OS.

EDIT: Never mind, got it to work. The Java installer gave me 7 update 4 for some reason instead of 7 update 5.

And one last thing. It won't work in Chrome even with the latest Java, but it will work in Internet Explorer. Is anybody else encountering this?

Even though I haven't tried this out yet, I think this thread and project definately warrants to be sticked. I am sure my fellow staff comrades would not object.

But I promise, I'll try it out tomorrow... which reminds me of the "procrastination thread" a few years back.....

Thread stickied.

I have been meaning to post on that one.

Yeah, it's a bit of a tough puzzle
. You need to find a weapon to kill the robot with. There are two weapons in the game, and one is actually in the same room with the robot. The other one... well. It's harder to find. All you need to do is find a weapon, kill robot with [weapon] and talk to cabal.

i love this style of game it is an old mud though different commands and such many of the ones i tried did not work.
Yeah, text adventures are what MUDs came from. They are essentially single-player MUDs, just a few years older.

I for one would like to see this completed and expanded. i can lend some help as i have played various muds over the years and can even do a small bit of codeing if needed. terra ever think of making a MUD? perhaps with the knowledge combined here we can all get one running.
That would be fun! This adventure is written in Inform 7, which is very easy to pick up, but I'm not sure if you can actually write multiplayer stuff with it. The other option is Java, which has very good support for networking stuff. I have some experience with it (me and some guys from university wrote a multiplayer card game a few years ago) but we'd still need a server to put it on.

I added spoiler tags in case somebody wants to read no advice at all on how or where to find a weapon. - EA
