• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

We have a policy of fairness and a non harassment environment, with the staff quick to act on the rare occasion of when this policy is breached. Feel free to register and join our community.

While listening to my music today, a thought crossed my mind. Am I allowed to use official BSG music in a public mod? Does releasing that mod here only count as it being public? Is there a legal way to do it?

I have no idea, and I figured it would better to ask y'all rather than just google it.

I'm not sure about 'offiicial' BSG music, but... Majestic has some BSG music from PRP available for download here. So, maybe it is possible.

B5A2 includes music from the Babylon 5 series and films... FleetOps includes music from Star Trek series and films... I can't see how the legal issues would differ here.

As far as I can see, the question with music would be the same as all else in modding. We're using Paramount/Warner Bros/whoever's ship designs, weapons graphic ideas, etc, which are copyrighted, but the companies don't prosecute us as we're low-key, and not making any money out of it.

It's not allowed on FileFront. Freyr and I have deleted mods before because they've had music content in them. Enforcement, however, is scattershot. I'm sure certain mods have musical content that gets through. Credits and permissions are my primary concerns, not sounds and music.

I think its the same with Youtube video's, ppl use artists music for those all the time and most arent affected (Some are tho). It depends on who has the rights ect but since its a game mod that your not making any cash off of i think you could get away with it.

If the worst comes to the worst then you can replace the music anyway, but i dont think too many would be concerned about a free mod using it if they are credited

We allow them on MSFC, as long as credit is given to the creators and not money or profit is made from it.

Adm_Z, if you wind up being in trouble over this, you'll be behind me. I used BSG music and sound effects in both the SB34 Pegasus Mod and in the BSG Half Race Mod. And these are sound captures from the web or the series or the released soundtracks. My TOS Adversary Mod uses sound effects from Star Trek: TOS. Just seemed right to use the correct sounds and ridiculous to do it any other way. About 35-40% of how we perceive a game comes from the sounds. Having something ingame which does not have the expected sounds causes the game, or mod, to be perceived as, "close but no cigar".

Companies copyright and trademark things not only to profit from them, but also to control the usage of these items. All companies desire the public to perceive their products in a certain way or with certain associations. This ensures the originators continue to profit from the original work and derivatives of said work. Companies are very sensitive to anything which can cause damage, with a resulting loss of profitability, to the perceptions the public has of their work. For example, there was recently a prophylactic manufacturer who wanted to tie in their product with the Harry Potter series of films. They were told, 'No!' rather quickly(Thank God!) by the copyright holders.

I doubt very much Bear McCreary or Ronald D. Moore will release the legal hounds to track and take down one Adm_Z or Thunderfoot, for the following reasons.

1) First and foremost, we are not attempting to profit from their work. Nor are we interfering with or reducing their income streams from BSG and related indicia. Our materials have a very specific application and cannot really be used outside of A2, FleetOps, or any related science fiction PC games.

2) What we've done does not appear to conflict with any of their future plans for BSG. At least none they've stated publicly.

3) Neither of us has portrayed anything or anyone connected to BSG in a slanderous or defamatory manner.

4) Our mods can be proven to contribute a positive publicity and additional positive interest in their work. (Yup, much as you may not like it, we can be seen as adverts! lol)

5) Paramount has not brought legal actions against any of us which I am aware of. And we've hammered their copyrighted materials into any shape we wanted for far longer than either you or I have tinkered withe BSG stuff.

6) And this may be the most important one of all. We are not big enough to bother with and the end result is not worth the negative publicity it will instantly generate acrosss the Web. I am quite sure some DRM thug is right now having a screaming fit over this part. Good. If I can cause one of these to pop three or four neurological arteries, then this post is time well spent. I find it amusing the entertainment companies are all okay with stealing from artists, just as long as the rest of us do not steal from them.

Hello:
And mine too, after all I made a cool Cylon music compilation for the game and it is nice to know that there is a place that it can be received.
