So this semester I am taking a class on 3D printing, and for my current assignment, I can print any model I want. We don't even have to use our own model. The only restraint is that it has to, of course, be sutable for 3D printing, and the final scale will be aprox. 4x4x6 inches. I can always use one of my own, but I thought I might ask here, does anyone have a model they would want to see 3D printed? It will undoubtedly require a minor amount of processing to make it ready, but poly count isn't an issue at all.

Any takers? I would need to work on it rather soon if anyone wants to let me use their model. :)

On your marks... get set... go!!!
Seriously, two hours and no takers yet?
I could probably find a mesh or ten that you could play with :D

If I recall, doesn't the mesh need to be hollow? i.e. have an inner and outer surface.

Whats the reason for the activity? To show how complicated an object you can print? To show how to use a printer? Or just because there's a printer available? Do you get to keep the model?

Depending on the purpose you may wish to consider carefully what you use - for example, if the purpose is to demonstrate printing complex shapes, a submarine probably isn't the most useful thing to print. A Talon Hawk, Glorious Heritage or Whitestar might be more suitable.
If it's something you get to keep and its printing for the sake of printing, then pick something that you want to put on your shelf.

If there's anything of mine that tickles your fancy just let me know.

Haha actually no. I"ll perform some boolean functions on it, maybe fillet some edges, but as long as the mesh is inherently solid, it can be printed.

Haha I've actually seen that. Pretty cool.

Anything star wars related you have that is particularly high poly? Or rather, higher.

To be perfectly honest, this is just an exercise in formatting. The first assignment was a test in precision. We were making sleeves to fit over flashlights. Yes I get to keep it. If its really good, I might paint it too. :)

Sure! Also, maybe the Aeon, I did think about it, but its kinda simplistic. We'll see.

I'll confess I have a small fascination with additive manufacturing, I think it has great potential if they can get the volume produced faster. I've seen some presentations at work where they've done some really remarkable weight saving designs. But conversely, I've seen a rapid prototype model produced that had a really poor finish, you could virtually see the layers and the curved finish was actually stepped.

I'm keeping an eye on the technology, there's a couple of meshes I'd like on my shelf one day, the printers are still a little on the expensive side for now though. I'd guess the material will be somewhat expensive as well - ink cartridges are expensive enough.

When I said about meshes being hollow, I meant as a material saving measure. Otherwise it'd be a solid starship which wastes material and could be rather heavy.

I'm surprised Hellkite didn't suggest Serephim ;)

Yeah, it really depends on how expediencies the printer is, and then also the process used. Though Laser printing is more expensive and wasteful, it is a lot more accurate. You don't get the visible layers seen in Stereo Lithography printers.

The Serephim was also tempting. :)

Actually, I think a Tantive IV would come out nicely, if anyone has a highish poly model. I still have Amateur's so I might use that but I forget how detailed it was.

Well if you want the Serephim let me know and I'll dig out the hi poly mesh (~47k polys). Other higher end ones you may be interested in are the Talon Hawk, Atlantis DSV, Whitestar, Shadow Battleship, Daedalus (although thats many component parts) and a Sovereign carrier. I would offer the Connie, but she's not done yet. Or there's the evil cat of doom of course.

Perhaps someone has a high poly battlestar?

Mine is only about 3k however there are some from Homeworld etc that are like 8 or something. If you're after high poly MSFC isn't the best place for that as we mainly focus on game models which you know are low poly for frame rate reasons.

Haha yeah I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. I might still use yours though, we'll see. I kinda have to pick something for sure by tomorrow, but I'm not exactly sure what will work just yet.

In that case, I think the Jigoku would be fantastic. It doesn't get enough love.

Yeah I always loved that design, I always felt it was a combat version of the Intrepid, designed for hit and run strikes with escort (Defiant) type ships.

Well they're certainly coming down in price - last time I looked they were over a grand (pounds, not dollars!). Let us know how you get on.

Roger that Maj

I'm thinking of doing Serephim build team key chains ie "the team logo " since it has dual heads that allows two colors of filament at the same time

That would be awesome mate, think of the things you can do with it. You could even print out the ship model itself for your desk. :D

Yep!
As well as her fighters but I going to take it slow so I can get use to it.

But the first think I be doing is the key chains for each team member "Oh the shipping LOL Australia, UK and the Philippines "

I"ll update y'all soon, but I"m receiving the final printed model on Monday!

@Hellkite

If you wanted them a single object, maybe with the words and logo cut out, I could make you an .stl(printable model) of that logo. I'm not sure how to do different colors since our printer doesn't do that afaik, but I could make the outer ring a separate part so maybe it could be printed in white?

Usually 3D printed objects aren't very pretty at first though. A paint job might be worth while.

That would be grate but It's going to be awhile before I'll be able to use it

The Z Axis motor gear failed ie striped and could not a line on start up it was damaged during shipping was not locked down and striped "I'm having to send it back to the factory to have it fixed at lest they are paying for the shipping , repair and standing by their product even gave me a 25% rebate for my troubles but it will take 3 to 4 months to get it back

That does suck Hellkite. I agree though that it is good they are standing by their product.

As for models for printing, I don't think any of mine are suitable. I would, however and with permission from the artist, like to see some one print the Armistice class.

Hello:
Which one was the armistice class again? I cannot see the link because my country is still blocked for all filesnetwork stuff.

Some of the fan-made BC models could fit nicely because those have more mesh details (rather than texture details). Good luck finding models!

Well, this should probably go in multimedia now, but whatever :D

I used Majestic's Tantive IV model as a base, but something was wrong with the edges and I didn't want to try and repair the mesh, so I ended up scaling it to the exact size I wanted and using it as a template, which was rather easy. The resulting model was, in basic terms, a 3D vector of the model. Then I output it to .STL which converted it to a polygon model. Then I got it printed.

Here are a couple shots of the vector file.

ccorvette1.PNG ccorvette2.PNG

And here are some fancy renders I did.
ccorvette.19.png ccorvette.20.png

And finally the printed model. The labtechs left it in the support material removal bath too long, so the very front section has a pool ring around it where the actual plastic started to soften, but other than that it came out very well. Forgive the blurry pictures too, I was using someone else's camera and not doing a good job. :D

looking good

When ever I get mine back it as a water Dissolvable support material come in a filament form that can use in the second extruder head

example

Dissolvable support material - white

regular filament - gray
