• Hello and welcome to MSFC. We are a small and close knitted community who specialises in modding the game Star Trek Armada 2 and the Fleet Operations modification, however we have an open field for discussing a number of topics including movies, real life events and everything in-between.

Being such a close community, we do have some restrictions, including all users required to be registered before being able to post as well as all members requiring to have participated in the community for sometime before being able to download our modding files to name the main ones. This is done for both the protection of our members and to encourage new members to get involved with the community. We also require all new registrations to first be authorised by an Administrator and to also have an active and confirmed email account.

We have a policy of fairness and a non harassment environment, with the staff quick to act on the rare occasion of when this policy is breached. Feel free to register and join our community.

One of the new features with v7 of MSFC is the resource manager and for the first time, members can upload their own files and create download profiles on MSFC. Because of this new feature this tutorial has been made so members can understand how to do this.

To some it will be pretty straight forward, to others it might not be. Important information will be in red for those who just want to skip through it and know how to do the majority of things.

To start with go to the resource tab in the navbar (top of the page) it will load you into the resources section. At the top of that page click add resource. A pop-up will appear and you'll be promoted with a list of categories, this will be where your resource will be added. Choose the most appropriate section. Note if you're already in a category this part will be automatically skipped and it will be assumed you want to add it to the category you're in.

After choosing a category, a new page will load and it will have fields in which you can input information. The first is a prefix, choose the most appropriate from the list. If you feel a new prefix is needed contact an Administrator. In most cases a prefix is required so members can be sure your file meets their needs. No point downloading a A2 mod if you're looking for A2-FO mods.

Then you input your title of your file. What you named it.

Next is the version string, this is something everyone needs to be aware of. When releasing a mod or file you'll have to add a software version string to it, then depending on the update (provided you update the file later) it will increase in version just like software does. This helps a downloader know what version your file is up to. Especially helps if they have previously download your file.

This is the basic layout for versions:

  1. Beta stage release (0.9) – this is a incomplete or barely functioning version of your mod. Later beta versions can be 0.9.x (for minor improvements, where x = a number like 1, 2 or 3 etc)
  2. Standard stage release (1.0) – this is the standard release stage. Later versions can be 1.0.x (for minor improvements, like improve textures, altered balancing etc, where x = a number like 1, 2 or 3 etc), or 1.x (for larger improvements, like adding a new race or several new units, where x = a number like 1, 2 or 3 etc)
  3. Second Major release (2.0) – this is usually for a major second release of a file, could be a total overhaul or the author feels the v 1.x is no longer valid for the mod as so much has changed since v1.0. Later versions follow the same structure as a standard release 2.0.x or 2.x.

Tag line is next, a one line description or punch line that describes your file. Humour is most welcomed here.

Then it's time to select your file to upload, remember 64MB is the max file and it's recommended that you use 7zip or Winrar formats here as they compress the best. Large mods can be split up by these programs into smaller files automatically so you can upload your mod. So no need to manually split them up. Each part will need it's own download profile.

Next add your description, describe your file/mod. Tell us what it is about, what you've done and encourage us to try it out.

Click the resource icon white square, you'll be promoted to upload the icon after you submit your file. The resource icon is what appears in the categories, the little picture with your avatar overlay on top of it. It is a requirement that all files have an icon, any file submitted without one will not be approved by Moderators.

Upload images is next, multiple images can be selected. Maximum number is 20 images per download page. It is a requirement that images be included in your file upload. Any file that doesn't have an image will not be approved.

Click save and then a pop-up after the page loads will appear asking for a icon. While it says an icon needs to be 96x96px, you can upload larger images and it will resize it for you. Once saved you're done and it will appear in the moderating queue to be approved by our Moderators or Site Managers.

I have a question, Why is the file size limit so small comparatively. While I can understand it not being unlimited i suppose something much larger like 100 to 500 MB would make more since for this sites purposes. Not complaining just curious. Seams unusual is all.

It's a restriction by the host. Due to being on a shared hosting server 64MB is the maximum allowed. If we want more we have to go to either a VPS server which is $1920 a year approx or a dedicated server which starts at $2088 a year. Both options are unfortunately out of my price range and really not worth it just for a larger PHP upload limit.

No problem I would have preferred a higher size myself. Thankfully it will only affect larger mods, and we don't have a huge number of those on MSFC, most being single ship releases.

Usinf 7zip gives the best compression and it's free to download, most people online no longer use zip as it's an extremely poor compression format and program, 7zip followed by Winrar are the leaders currently in the file compression industry.

You can download 7zip here:

I have them both problems going to be getting my files on my laptop and working out the breakdown. Moding rigs a brick again and I think its going to take sending the HD to a recovery expert to save my old unfinished projects.

Well I have your released ones on back-up on my harddrive as well as backed up still on MSFC in a different spot as a temp back-up until everyone has re-uploaded their work. So if you or anyone else needs their files, just give me a shout.

I wasn't sure where to put this so please move if necessary, but would it be possible in the resources section to break out the star wars stuff from the star trek stuff even though they are both for A2/FO perhaps in their own sections or something?

Hello:
And thanks for making this tutorial. It is always better to be safe than to be sorry :) (I mean for us users that have never uploaded anything yet).

I can't see 'add resource' anywhere on the resources page. Is there something I've missed?

The Add Resource button is immediately to the right of the navigation bar:

There are a number of minor restrictions on using the download section designed to protect the community from people just coming in and swiping everything without at least making some effort to join in. These are stated in the Terms of Service section, but I've copied them here:

To be eligible to download files, the user must be a participating member of the community and is required to post an introduction thread in the introduction section of the forums and post at least 30 posts of decent size (mass amounts of single or 3 worded posts within a very small time frame will be deleted as this is noted to rapidly increase your post count just to gain access to downloads and is also considered to be spam), be active for 7 days and have made some contribution (ie, participate in discussion on the forums) to the MSFC community and have a like count of at least 3 which can only be gained by other members liking your posts, if you are still waiting after a substantial amount of time, please PM a staff member, who will give you the rep required. No excuses will be accepted for not knowing, because if you are unaware, then you have breached the site rules by not reading and abiding by them and will be subject to the warning procedure outlined at the bottom of this page.

I suspect (and I can't say I've ever seen this come up before), the ability to upload may be restricted by the same limitations.

Yeah, I think so. The threshold is very quickly reached if you just talk to people.

Sadly, the restriction exists for a reason - we have had problems with people such as the ones KJC describes before.
